errr pin-sized hole in the CV-boot perhaps :?  Ohh ok that would make sense... I was like how does he know there's a hole in a pin? Where is the pin in the CV boot? nowww I gettit. Guess I need a new CV boot as well then... As my yokel stealer (Vindis) is listed on the VW Parts Club, does that mean I can wave my CCGB membership card and get the parts at the rate quoted on those parts club docs?

Yeah, I'm fairly sure that they're shot as there's no receipts suggesting they've been replaced and that was over 2yrs ago. Worryingly it also said there was a bolt missing from the front engine mount which again doesn't seem to have been replaced. Might get a Vibratechs mount for the front because I'm sure the mount isn't going to be in the best shape and I don't really fancy a dent in my bonnet :D Gonna add them to my shopping list and a fuel filter too cos it's not been replaced in at least 2 yrs. Yay. Also...any ideas what 'CV Boot pin holed' could mean?

Cool, I need to get that done before I sell my old car then :)

I'm now well versed in what to inspect when looking for a C to buy but this technical stuff is new to me. This thing still feels like a sodding rocket ship to me to drive, so I need to get used to it a bit before I work out if the rear bushes/front top mounts are in need of replacing. The current plan is to make sure it's mechanically sound by replacing the bits I was talking about here, then take it on a track day to dispose of the crappy tyres and shagged brakes. Then put new on before I leave the circuit. :D

Added to my list of to-gets... PM on it's way to phat :D I'l have to work out the bugger comes off... easy job? I'm clueless when it comes to spannery, but I'm willing to learn and my mate's a dab hand. Any pointers? Sorry for all the questions guys, I really do appreciate your help! It's invaluable!

Oh and have you got a part number and/or indication of cost for that crusty looking belt/tensioner?
  7. Heh heh you're following me aren't you? :D I'm cleaning her bit by bit, so hopefully by next weekend she'll be nice and clean :)

Thanks dazzyvr6 let's hope that's all it is, the thought of getting new injectors doesn't appeal too much. Looking at the latest service receipt it has had a replacement filter number 021 115 562, any idea if this is fuel or oil? It was £9.31 +VAT. If it's a fuel filter it should rule that out as a possible gammy point, if not then it's definitely in need of a new one because I have no receipt for one in the last 2 yrs.

Oop no, saves me a trip down there :D Got a part number to tell VW? Or is this something else I can get cheaper from Ford? ;) I like your techincal terms, perfect descriptions :)

Mike Edwards, lol it's madness, but good to know. I found that out from one of the past threads, but just thought I should double check it's still the same case now. dazzyvr6 and off to the garage I go... :D

dazzyvr6, I stand corrected. Very odd, but good news cos it's something I can cross off my list. Nice clean engine bay you've got (compared to mine!) vr6storm, yeah this is the thing bothering me the most at the moment because turning it over like that can't be good for the starter motor. It doesn't seem to make owt difference to it starting if I give it some gas or not (contrary to what I said earlier) so I don't know if that makes any difference. Have you got a picture of wehre that sensor is so I can see if it's come loose? If the temp sensor is dead then I'll give that a go first, as I guess it's only a fiver or so. I need a new oil temp sensor anyway cos I have no reading on the MFA for that. Saying that, I can't seem to see it, I know it's at the top right with a green and black wire. Has anybody got a picture so I can check it's just not come loose?
  12. Well he *thought* it was air con, but he wasn't sure. He didn't know a whole lot about it in fairness, but apart from the lack of cleaning it seems to be reallly nice. Thanks jimsG60, sounds like I'm going to have fun day with that tomorrow :D Good point.. the headlining has grubby finger prints all over it too  Thanks kongo127, it's going to be very well looked after :) No cold thrashings for me. And rodney, we need to organise a meet up sometime. Already got someone else from Cambridge interested in a mini-meet. There's another blue VR around my town that I keep seeing, so I need to find out where and who they are!

blimey that was quick! :) Thanks dazzy Top strut looks fine to me, but I've got no idea what I'm looking for. I have service receipt from 2002 saying it has play and needs replacing and no evidence that it's been replaced. Same with rear axle bushes, CV boot pin and brake disks. The last pic looks very odd, I'm sure there should be another 2 pieces of that black plastic to cover the wiper motors. Oh well, I'll make a list... currently on £600 inc new brake pads and disks and rubber all round
  14. 22, 0yrs NCB, no convictions or claims 93 VR6, 8k miles £998 inc legal cover and courtesty car with elephant.co.uk £350 excess tho :o

Well I did quite a bit more driving today (forced to go out to a rally school :D) and the starting is just as bad warm or cold, but once it is started it seems to run sweet as a nut. So I would say it's probably not a coolant sensor, especially as the coolant temp gauge reports sensible numbers. The car has only done 80k miles, so I would hope it's not the injectors, espeically as the idle is very stable. However the fuel filter could well be gunked up, and as it's the cheapest part to start with, I'll give that a go methinks. VAG or GSF/europarts for that? Any ideas on price? Bearing mind my minimal mechanical knowledge of course :D There are a few things on a service receipt from a couple of years ago that still need doing, so I'll get them sorted, but after my under bonnet inspection I found some weird looking stuff.... can anyone make any suggestions as to what's going on?
  16. So after today's close under-bonnet inspection, located the air con compressor and also managed to get myself a nice icy blast in the cabin, so it has got air con AND it works! Yay. Thanks for the pointers guys. lol. It is very nicely specced, but it's still bloody filthy. I wiped down the dash today so that looks nice and clean and I vacuumed all the loose crap out of the carpets and seats, but both need a proper clean. Can anybody recommend what to do? Are there any good cleaner in a can type things? Or should I get my local valet dude to shampoo the lot for me? Oh and it's much nicer than leather... even with air con your back sweats something rotten and you still slither all over the place when you're giving it some welly. Cloth all the way :D ;) ok ok maybe Alcantra :D
  17. Mine doesn't go down untill I'm doing less than 7 or 8mph (rough guess but I really have to be crawling) - does this mean that there are different lowering speeds too? Could be, I've only had mine a couple of days, so I'm guessing at the speeds. I seem to remember someone on here saying it was 14mph tho.
  18. Oh I getcha now... traffic lights as well. I thought you were saying it was going up and down every time you blipped either above or below 46mph. I was gonna say jim shoulda spotted something wrong with that...but not it's just me being an eejit :D
  19. Ah didn't know about the wing mirrors folding :) It sounds like you've got sommant fishy going on with your spoiler... mine goes up at 50ish but it doesn't go down again til I get below about 14mph? Edit: Mine's a 93 if that makes any difference?

Thanks Mike It's only from stone cold that it takes a while to start, it starts first time after it's even slighlty warm. I also noticed that the breather valve is also broken, and flapping around, could that be affecting the startup? That's the plastic bit. I seem to have one of the pieces left on the passenger side, but the other 2 bits are missing. I'll give the stealer a call next week and see how much they want for that. Some hands and knees with a torch action is coming to a footwell near you (well me actually)
  21. I thought it seemed odd to have 2 settings for heated seats, but at the same time there seemed no other indication of there being air con in the car. The rest of the car is completely orignal, so I don't see the switches being there just for the sake of it. What else can I look for to find out if it has air con? I'll have a go at jabbing the button and seeing if I get cold air out, but it's unlikely it'll work because the previous owner said he hadn't used it at all in the 2yrs he had it. As far as toasty bum goes, I thought that all the Recaro's were heated? But I have no idea where the switch for it is if they are heated.

Oh the previous owner has also taken the inner seat levers off the Recaro's cos it made it easier to get to his kids in the back. They look pretty mangled tho, so anybody know where/how much new ones of them are too?
  23. I've still got the original factory tape head unit in mine, so I'll have to give it a go. It might only work on the higher end factory ones though? My findings will be reported back :)
  24. No air con... the guy before me seemed to think it had air con, but I thought the switches were down by the cigarette ligther. There's certainly no compressor/rad under the bonnet (well that I can see). I'm presuming they are the buttons for the heated Recaro's, but not tried them to find out yet as a roasting arse in this weather isn't nice! Edit: I could of course be completely wrong, so if anyone can suggest otherwise/what I should be looking for then please let me know cos air con would be fantastic! :D

    Minor niggles

Well I picked up my VR today and it's bloomin' fantastic :D:D:D:D:D The car is in pretty much immaculate condition inside and out apart from a couple of dings. It's pretty dirty, but a good clean and it will be like new. However, on my drives today I noticed a couple of tiny things that I just want to check up on with you guys... It takes quite a while to start from cold, a good 5 secs of turning over before it starts. I can give it a bit of gas to get it to pick up quicker, but is it signs of a dying starter? Or just the norm for a VR? The piece of plastic cowling under the bottom of the windscreen seems to be missing, is it easy/possible to replace? Anyone got any idea on price (presumably needed from the stealer? :( ) When driving there seems to be a bit of engine noise coming from the passenger footwell in an otherwise silent car. Could there be a bit of sound insulation missing somewhere? Other than that the car is absolutely fantastic and I'm pleased to finally have one after wanting one for soooooo long :D
