The Monkey's Daily - Mk2 Golf GTi 8v [straight through MOT]

cool, pretty sure it would be that, as long as you keep oil in an 8v very little ever goes wrong with them :) -
take the fan speed switch out of the dash and check how it switches with a multimeter first, it's a feed in and 4 separate contacts out, you can work out the live feed in from the wiring colours to the plug for the back of it, sounds like the switch is well and truly knackered, don't know what else would cause that symptom, I don't think you can get the connector plug on wrong.
-
second hand, any post 1992 4 cylinder 16v really, so that's a passat, golf mk3 16v, 16v SEAT's too. the 8v part is a slightly different part number, not sure why, will check later as I have both engines and the blocks are basically identical, I reckon your should be able to use an 8v one too which would make sourcing one a lot easier.

The Monkey's Daily - Mk2 Golf GTi 8v [straight through MOT]

my bet is dodgy wiring near the terminal to the sender itself, at that age the most exposed bits of wiring corrode a long way back into the loom and the outer plastic coating gets very brittle too. -
2 different ones depending on chassis no. 027121065P up to chassis 50-N-007500 (same as mk2 16v golf) 051121065C 50-N-007501 on (this is the same as the 9A 2L 16v engine in corrado and passat) I think the difference is the position of the take off pipe to the header tank and it may be that either would actually do.
-
Pretty easy, hose clips can be a fiddle especially the hose to the end of the pipe in front of the block as access is a bit tight, cable clips can snap as they go brittle

OK, track control arms for 4 cyl corrados first, Corrado 8v, 16v and G60 use mk2 golf items part no. 191407151B these are NOT handed then rear control arm bush 191407181E, all mk2 golf, corrado 8v, 16v and G60, also mk3 golfs. 191 signifies a mk2 golf sourced part, so all 4 cylinder corrados actually use mk2 parts VR6 corrado uses mk3 GTI/VR6 parts signified by 1HO prefix: left track control arm 1HO407151A right 1HO407152 these control arms are part of the 'plus' running gear that gives the VR6 a slightly wider track than the 4 cylinder cars, it also includes longer track rods, different hubs/bearings and different drop links/arb The bushing is actually the same mk2 part again 191407181E , and ALL mk3's including GTI/VR6 use this too. hope that clears it up
-
4 cylinder corrados use mk2 parts, the VR6 uses mk3 GTI/VR6 parts, subframes vary more but the arms, balljoints, drop links, track rods and ends are as above oh, and all the subframes on corrados I've seen (from early valver to late VR6) have rear wishbone bush locating 'C' shapes presssed into them so no need for the separate thin sleeve that mk2 golfs had fitted into the centre of the bush.

yeah, I seem to remember various extension bars and enough muttering doing it that way, but some of those manifold to head ones are stupid, you can't even get a socket on IIRC
-
I just removed the head complete with exhaust manifold, downpipe to manifold bolts are easier to get to and beefier than the head studs and nuts.
-
it doesn't, the original dash had no hole for wires or mounting points, there were a couple of metal brackets that you had to screw into the plastic with self tapping screws, one of the brackets went obselete before 1995! you can however easily make something up with some radio mounting strips (like mechano) or similar, just be very careful measuring the fixing position as the early gauge panel isn't a great fit and is difficult to position just right.
-
great picture, what wheels/suspension is it on now?, it looks spot on height and 'wheel-filling-arch' wise :)
-
Just repair the trouble spots and flat down the rest, not worth the effort of stripping sound paint and especially primer. If they are badly rusted then welding in new metal is possible but tricky to do well, hardly worth it if you can find better s/h ones
-
Unlikely, they start off squeeling and end up groaning, could be one wedged in the subframe and bouncing his nut on the offside driveshaft I guess???
-
Just fit all standard, 16v doesn't really need a stiffer front mount and they transfer more noise and vibration.
-
windscreen cutters  that's my phone talking, should have been windscreen fitters :)
-
Stuck mine down with black silicone sealant, clear would do too. It should be a snug fit but windscreen cutters rarely get the screen bonded in exactly the right position, letting them drop a little.

wheels feel like there turning without the steering wheel...

yep, I agree, if the rear bushes on your wishbones are worn/torn the car will be all over the place when you accelerate or brake hard. -
no worries, I did do a photo how-to ages ago on here somewhere for the 16v which is basically the same. Also, on my 8v I found that the bracketry needed shimming slightly, in fact I ovalled out the holes for bolts 15 and 16 too to allow a bit of adjustment, as the pulley wasn't parallel with the crank pulley, just used a steel rule edge to check this.
-
I'm a bit dubious about mk2 ones fitting as none had the 02A gearbox (except mk2 G60) and the pipe should attach to the front engine mount bracket which is 02A specific. The pipe connections vary too, with some engines having an extra 'take off' pipe 'T' from the main pipe (2 rather than 1).
-
yes, to tension the belt, but you need to slacken 14/18 and possibly 19/20, trouble is that diagram is a bit generic, you need to make sure the 13mm bolts that move in slots holding the pump in it's cradle are free to slide as you tension up 26.
-
it's not just the vibration (that you will get), think of the poor driveshaft joints and the gearbox, a bit of engine mount movement cushions the rest of the drivetrain :) I wouldn't go solid or race spec VT, but a road VT front mount should have enough movement to give a bit of isolation and probably only slight noticeable vibration at idle

Cold system, start car and hand over tailpipe? With car on a ramp you can usually hear the leak instantly. -
VW spares track rods I bought were FEBI, but definitely not OEM quality. They were cheap, about £20 each complete with track rod ends, and they improved the steering no-end, they've not developed play or anything but the rods themselves rusted pretty quick with one winters use.
-
Now why would VW do something sensible like that? The corrado part is corrado specific, but the passat part(s) is the same as the mk2 golf, typical!
