1. Don't do it! Seriously Jim the bodywork on that car is pretty good when cleaned of bird poo and aside from a steering rack that needs replacing is a solid car, given the current lack of decent cars on the road it would be a shame to break up another one despite it being worth more in parts.
2. It's all in this thread: here So lockage for this one.
3. Yeah sounds about right. I have the rolling road day DVD around somewhere that Nigel(G60jet) shot.
4. Guessing that is an ebay special VAG-COM cable? You need to make sure you have the correct software downloaded for it from the ROSS tech website.
5. Was that morning we met up at the services (can't remeber which), you arrived late with smoke coming off your tyres when you stopped? WPIMK.. :)
6. Well they are a lot rarer than a VR :)
7. Component painting today, water pump, charger and the timing belt metal panel all needed a blow over. Charger is pre-paint, water pump is post paint and the panel needs another coat. It should mean that all my aluminium bits in the engine bay now last a lot longer and are all the same colour; the charger was starting to show signs of corrosion (white powder) through the existing layer of paint so it needed a blow over. Product of choice is aluma-blast; I have found it to be very hard wearing and it has a heat rating of 130 degrees C so should more than manage with (non overheating) engine temps.
8. 27th November 2005 according to my pictures drive, Dinkus had some terrible pink hair! Looks like Jay Renshaws motor on the left along with Judiths factory ride height Storm in the middle.
9. As already mentioned a damn good machine polish will probably bring it up lovely as long as the lacquer is intact. Very early VR6 model as the interior is pre-facelift (linear not rotary heater controls etc) and the current leather is not what it would have the dealership with. As you are going to the effort of getting the engine running then it must be worth using it for a while and then selling a complete running car, plenty of folks on the hunt for an honest, straight original car these days.
10. Few pics of it in pieces again. Charger is off so I can replace the bracket with the freshly painted one, new top pulley setup is fitted to the new charger bracket, water pump is off for paint and I will give the charger a blow over too whilst I have it in bits. Various bits to progress this week prior to the engine going back in and then head off for conrod work. Anyway, some photos:
11. Here: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/power-steering-store/
12. I ordered a set for the rack on a Friday morning and they arrived Saturday in the post so they get them out fast enough. As for LHD or RHD, you want RHD. Rado ones seem to 535 part numbers, although you should be able to get any of them to fit ok.
13. Humn Norwich to Fife.. you wouldn't happen to work for a large aerospace company near St Andrews that is currently reviewing its sites North of the border?
14. Try the power steering store on ebay, guy remakes them and they are a lot cheaper than VAG at about £70 each.
15. Great finish and whilst EJ is annoying he does always provide an alternative point of view which is what you want in an pundit, he is also pretty handy at grabbing people for an interview, so despite his rambling I do think he adds something. I don't think it should have started under the safety car the first time and the safety car should have gone in a lot quicker the 2nd time, if you have guys pitting for inters within a lap of the safety car going in then the full wets look pretty stupid. Awesome drive from Button lets hope that someone can hunt Vettel done or what could be a great year will be dulled by a wonky fingered German running away with the championship.
16. Good to see the photos Chris. Kev, The VR6 oil filter housing was a brand new design for the mechanics back when it was introduced, couple that with the low sales of that engine in either Golfs, Corrados and Ventos and there is a good chance this was the first time the dealer mechanic had been anywhere near the VR6 engine since introduction. I would put some money on more folks having exactly the same issue on the hotter VR6s. As for the 4 cylinder design, they all drop oil over the front of the engine but the G60 is worse due to the lower radiator hose arrangement.
17. Heh, someone else would answer instead :)
18. The drain holes can be seen from the top of the sunroof cassette looking down and you will find them in each corner as already mentioned. Wire coat hanger or some air pressure usually shift out the obstructions. You will find the other end in the front wheel arch behind the liners and the rear ones live at the leading edge of the rear bumper, just look for black rubber rubes.
19. Quicker for me, has been slow since the new site design on and off.
20. The older cars tend to be better in terms of rust protection that the later ones, I think the cars were spending a lot less time in the zinc galvanising dip tub during 94 and 95 as costs were going through the roof and sales continued to be poor. As for rust issues it depends on the type fo rust, most corrados tend to suffer form surface rust which can easily be ground out with a dremmel or similar, treated with some form of paintable rust killer (krust or jenolite) and then painted. Whatever car you get it is likely there will be some rust on it somewhere and it is worth the effort of removing the door cards, rear 1/4 trim, boot trim and sill trim to inject some fresh wax into the cavities to top up the old wax.
21. True and the same can be said for overtaking, but you can always drop a cog or two and in the current climate and overdrive style fifth is very desirable. Throw in the way a G60 engine likes to build huge heat at sustained motorway speeds due to engine revs on the stock gearbox and the longer legged mk 3 diesel items are a good modification (and you can clear 60mph in 2nd) Alex you need to remember that springs and under a lot of force hence the big failure with quite a bit of material not corroded on the springs.
22. Chuff all, its just the outer GRP that differs.
23. Spotted that when I had fiddle after posting, not many left at all now! Although the VR I bought recently wasn't on SORN properly so there may be a few more around like that.
24. Even less G60s left on the road. Figures are always going to be inaccurate as a lot of folks now SORN their cars over winter and I know a few folk that have some laid up in garages waiting for the right time to sell. I have 3, none of which are currently taxed.. :(
