Taking Jame's suggestion a little further, it's best to get the pump pressure checked on the rolling road as they usually always give 4bar at idle, even if dying. If the flow pressure drops as the injectors open up more at high revs, the pump is heading for the grave. A new pump is roughly £90 from a dealer, so they're not mega expensive....especially considering it's a lift pump, main pump and acummulator all in one unit. Kev

Didn't know the blower fan had leeks in it, maybe that's where the oniony smell is coming from? Speaking of blower fans. Mine had a bizarre problem. It didn't work on any speed. Did the usual checks and just on the verge of giving up, I found that pin number 1 on the fan connector (earth) had melted the plastic around it. The molten plastic had severed the electrical connection. It's OK now but what on earth would cause that to happen? Cheers Kev

I don't think it's so much the weight that's the problem, but more a characteristic of the engine. A MK2 16V weighs 1040Kg and that is equally unresponsive off the cam. I remember reading an article about the Corrado VR6 when it was first launched and it's incremental acceleration times matched a Porsche 911's (non turbo) at the time. The old VR can really stomp the tarmac when it wants to. Kev

Blimey, I've driven a Type R and you need a lot of power to leave one so convincingly! They only weigh around 1100Kg and have good engine response in the vtec zone. Not much happens below 5000rpm though. With all the VWs I've driven, they all respond best at 4K! Except the diesels. They must come on the cam at that rpm. Kev

That car is amazing. The install is exceptional. He built that some years ago and it's still going strong. A real testament to his ability and choice of components. Kev

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone. I'm sure you do give a damn, but some mechanics don't and my comment was aimed at them. Kev

Halfords sell Castrol chain wax. It's great stuff and I use it on my mountain bike chain. Kev
-
That's the factory rust inhibiting wax melting. Nothing to worry about. It happens mainly to red and dark coloured cars as they absorb more heat. White spirits will remove it from the bumper. Kev

Hear what you're saying Roddy but the VR6 front end is a lot heavier than a MK3 2.0 8V's! Maybe the shock body has the same part number but the valving inside is different? Kev

I work for an insurance company and if the claims assessor notices undeclared non-standard items fitted, the policy could be voided. If you claim the parts were on the car when you bought it and didn't know any different, they may come to an agreement. However, if the bonnet is lifted and a dirty great supercharger can be seen, then no way, but orange or red springs and yellow dampers, well, you may be OK. Kev

Well http://www.volks-speed.co.uk is still online, so must still be alive? Kev

Looking through my history, the only MOT it failed was 2 years ago due to perishing rear brake flexi-hoses. Not bad for a 9 year old car. All the VWs I've had sail through the MOTs, even my ropey old MK1s. The only thing they generally pick on with German cars is the steering rack from my experience. Everything else is just too solid to fail it on! Kev

Damage whilst in for remap ! - advise me please.

Unfortunately, unless you can prove the car was sound before it went in, it's your word against theres, and they know you it won't go to court over such a small (comparitively speaking) amount. This is why when you rent a car from a National or Avis etc, they have you sign a disclaimer before you take the car away. Sorry dude. It's going to be down to the goodwill of the garage. Kev -
Have you seen how much Corrado body parts are??? G60 BBS wheels cost £360 each from the dealer! Wings are well over £100, doors are on the wrong side of £200 and I hate to think how much it'll cost to get a new sill welded in. I still say £4K is OTT though and they might be inclined to writing it off. I'd personally hope for that to be honest because once a car needs new sills or floor, that's it, it's never the same again. Kev

Oh and Spax are nasty. Steer clear. Kev

Koni claim they valve their dampers to the car and aren't just generic "off the shelf" products. Is this proof that they're lying?? Kev
-
OK, you learn something everyday! So basically the signal is converted to light at the plug end and then back to electricity again? Kev
-
I doubt very much it's the fuel filter. Something major has gone wrong to cause the symptopms he described. Could be anything, best to get it hooked up to the diagnostics. My guess is either an O2 sensor, MAF sensor or engine speed sensor. Kev
-
Hmmm, there's a lot more involved than that and there certainly aren't any optoisolators or phototransistors involved. Why would there be in a hardwired electrical circuit? No light involved. Kev

Scott's right, could be the tensioner. Wind a long 8mm bolt (13mm head) into the hole on top of the tensioner until the belt is completely slack. Now grab the tensioner pulley and wiggle it about and spin it etc. It should spin freely with a very slight amount of lateral play. If it's seized solid or very stiff to turn, replace it. The VR6 uses a 90 amp alternator and I don't think there are many a lot bigger than that, other than specialist ICE ones or DAF truck jobs! Kev

God, it's like 16V ownership all over again. And just like the 16V, the VR seems to get better with age and some engines are just really strong in general and some aren't! Which explains why one motoring mag couldn't get their test example to 60 in less that 7.5 seconds. Kev

Have you got a picture of your home-made lead? I'd love to see what IC components he used. Kev
-
Yes but they still order from Ross-Tech in America. I bought mine from the US site and it arrived 2 days later. A friend ordered an early OBD1 (twin plug) converter lead to use in my OBD2 lead from the UK site and it took weeks to arrive. Kev

Eibachs have never touched the Wishbones in my experience. Did you fit the bar dead centrally? if not, the side that's longest in will clout the wishbone. Could also be your brake disc shields? Kev
-
Have you got the original fitting reciept from the shop that fitted the alarm to the car? I have for mine and the shop that fitted it said they'd transfer the warranty over to my name, and then fix it under warranty! They're not supposed to do that, but it's worth asking as some shops turn a blind eye to it in order to help their customers. Kev
