  1. £1,300 thats brilliant. Looks quite similar to mine. Mine has 137k and pulls as strong as ever. Just change the oil very often and all the other bits and should be fine. The chains must have been done, surely?

    Oil Advice.

hmm, I have also seen this castrol high mileage oil and wondered about it. I think it uses slightly different compound just to make the oil slightly thicker/thinner. But I always use synter silver, I think the gold will probably be too thin.
  3. nice c, good choice of car. good luck with it, always plenty of help here.
  4. depends where you take it, wouldn't of thought any cheaper than £500 tho. But if I was in your shoes, I would probably get a nice little valver, try and spend very little on it and do some servicing on it yourself, then, after a year, once you have an extra ncb, get a vr.
  5. no word of a lie, 37.8mpg on a trip from westerham to orpington at rush hour. Admittedly for the first five minutes I always change up really early until the engine is right up to heat but also took it up to 110 on a little back lane graham knows about. She is just running really well right now after I changed fuel, air, oil filter, plugs, rotar arm and distributor cap.
  6. friend also had an old y reg one, white with whale tail. He also had a modified mk1 gti and said the gti was quicker but the 911 went round corners flat like it was on rails.
  7. I have driven a CTR hard for 500 miles when it first came out (friends!) Well, if you hammer it, make no doubts, it is quick, quite a hard ride but the handling is good. It's the kind of car that shows it's merits the harder you drive it. Really not to my style tho, hence why I got a VR. Haven't tried the clio but I'm sure I would prefer a 172 cup or 182. But in a straight line it is easily as quick as a vr, go to santa pod and see for yourself.
  8. welcome to the forum. You can't go wrong with the valver but at the risk of a back lash, have you considered the golf mk2 16v gti? also a very good car. mpg obviously depends on a lot of things but make sure you give it a good service and persevere if it gives you probs, they are old cars now after all. Had my vr up to 37.8mpg the other day after a full service! and was not grannying it, up to 110 down a lane.
  9. yea, you have to take it with a pinch of salt. The mpg was straight back down to 25 on a run over to bluewater last night, and I was changing up really early and then slowly taking it up to a tonne once in 5th.
  10. I know, I was in disbelief, especially as I hit a bit of traffic and had foot to the floor on a couple of occasions. I may take her out later just to see if I can hit 40mpg lol. She had half a tank at the time so I think if I try it with only a few gallons left it might make it possible, plus I can take a couple of things out of the boot. I also strongly suggest using BP ultimate, it is not a placebo affect, I guarantee.
  11. wow, thats quite a bit of work, but in for a penny and all that ay. I think you have the right little lane in mind. They have just resurfaced it aswell so is even better. You will probably have to go very early or late to get a clear stretch tho.
  12. but the alloys stick out like a sore thumb. I guess it could potentially be a very fast car, is it made out of plastic? lol.
  13. yep, definitley does it for me. Always liked black rims. quite like the dark grey type rims on the 182s aswell.
  14. Ok so I finally got round to sorting the vr out. I have however changed the oil twice in 4k miles but something was seriously wrong. She was not accelerating properly and running rough, or to put it correctly, misfiring. So I changed the ht leads, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotar arm and fuel and air filter. The spark plugs were really mucky, the rotar arm had seized up and the dizzy cap was black as anything too. And after I had did that... how did it drive.... All I can say is wow! It's like a new car almost. I can't believe it is a petrol engine and has done 137k because it pulls like a train now. There is a little country lane that is very straight near me (between s'oaks and brasted) and is safe to speed when clear, I had it up to 110 without changing down thru gears to build up speed! And as for fuel economy, from westerham to orpington, I gave it some beans on three junctions and when I parked up, it was reading 37.8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy bunny! 8) :) :D
  15. I'm suprised they didn't have an old 3.0 turbo Supra on there for that money, they should definitley do a 3k budget one there tho, with an old but tidy vr and maybe an mr2 turbo.
  16. the VR has a bit more kudos, haven't driven the g60 but would think it is probably a bit more fun being a bit lighter and revy low down, but agreed if you have plenty to spend, get a late storm, it's a no brainer.
  17. I'm not sure, I have "only" been up to 130 in my vr and I seem to remember the rev needle around 5k, I think the limiter would have to be raised to hit 160, and hasnt the vectra got a 6th cog that is obviously much taller?
  18. I don't have a problem with this guy doing 159 on the motorway at 4am,, if he has xenon headlights or whatever those really bright ones are called you would probably notice him coming up behind you. But there is a reason you get your license taken away at over 100 on a motorway, because over that speed, you have less time to react to other drivers who may not see you as you are going fast. But they really should of beefed up the brakes, if it was a mclaren slr or 911 tt that can stop quicker from 120 than most cars can from 60 then it would be understandable, but it's still a fwd vectra. I do have an issue with him doing 84 in a 30 tho, that is bang out of order regardless of condittions or time of day, he is then risking other peoples lives by virtue of being in a built up area. I think this guy may encourage others to do the same now, maybe other forums will be posting stuff like, "I just did 170 on the m54"

    2.8or 2.9

Have you considered sourcing a 24v 2.8? they seem to be much cheaper than the 20v ts second hand and is probably better than the Corrado 2.9. Just a thought.
  20. the aa man did have a look, he merely pointed out that because the engine fired up fine, the chains were in order otherwise the engine wouldn't of started. I did have a look at the chains and everything seemed in order but then I have never seen one on it's way out so don't have much to compare to. The noise was definitley coming from the top of the engine- or the cylinder head area. I have a suspicion it may be the camshaft or valves? I could feel the resonance of the engine through the steering wheel though and I would never dream of driving my vr in that state. I think thats the best way I could sum it up really. I really don't want to sell up but I really have my doubts at the moment....
  21. Hi People, The poor old VR has been idling quite loudly and now there is nothing at all when I turn it over. The AA man didn't know what was wrong with it when it was running, but it was coming from the cylinder head area. He said the chains are fine, but I need help! thanks, Sam.
  22. I have a similar problem with mine, it is a bit rattly, the aa man didn't know what was wrong but just said it was coming from the cylinder head... what a genius! not. And maybe it is me but I think it has lost a bit of power. Maybe vag com would help?
  23. I have found myself in the same boat as you. To be honest, I can afford the petrol although it doesn't make sense. I do atleast 600 miles a week motorway mileage but I can get about 33mpg out of the VR on a good run which is acceptable, but in 1 years time she would of done another 30k+ miles! Jim, hows the tdi? bet you'r glad you got the pd with the 6 speed box ay? bets on how long before it's remapped? I may well get one myself
  24. and what was that Merc that overtook you? that car was very rapid.
  25. I have found the toyos to be very good, lots of grip, better than the good years I had before, but I don't think they were particularly good ones.
