here's one i typed up earlier   Posted: Thu Feb 06, 2003 11:30 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- as for things to look out for(in no order btw) 1)make sure that the oil level is at/near the max and is relatively clean.......much lower points to careless ownership 2)it might sound a tiny bit tappetty(could be down to too thin an oil being used) and also have a very slight uneven idle this is normal, though through the rev-range it should be silky smooth and refined 3)make sure the spoiler rises at either 40/45mph(early cars) or 56mph(later cars)and that it can also be raised manually 4)make sure all the other electrics work too 5)check that there is no oil mixing with the water in the expansion tank....if it is it could be either the oil/water heat exchanger(£40ish part + fitting)or worse the h/gasket(£200++) also check the oil-filler cap...though don't automatically think that if there is a slight mayo on it that the h/gasket's failed as it could just as easily be condensation 6)all vr6's have abs fitted.....make sure that the abs light goes off within seconds of starting the car...if there is no abs light fitted or it doesn't go off then this points to either an expensive fault or that the abs has been removed 7)make sure the s/roof opens and closes without twisting as this can be quite expensive to fix 8)make sure that the tyres are wearing evenly if not this points to the steering geometry being out and could also be an expensive suspension problem 9)door handles are prone to breaking and can be expensive to fix....one of the signs is a stiff handle when opening the door thats all from the top of my head it might be an idea getting a vw-dealer or specialist to inspect it is so that they can also check the dtc's(aka fault codes) with the vag-com software............as these can be expensive to fix and can cause all sorts of future problems hth

right you'll be pleased to know you don't have to worry about a timing belt.......the VR6 has a timing chain ........and this doesn't have a "interval" for getting changed its just if you are rebuilding an engine its just as easy putting a new one on........though the timing chain tensioners can wear out as for it losing or using water.......i would get a VW-dealer or VW-specialist inspect the car before you buying it............as it could be something as minor as the expansion cap needing replaced to something a lot more sinister(and of course dearer)
-
right as kev says make sure that it is the rack that needs replacing anyway here are the parts prices from VW and euro-car-parts Steering racks 2.9i VR6 1H2422061AX...........£386.84.......... VW Mk 3 Golf/vento/corrado..#603440080(new).......£329.95(genuine exchange)...........euro car parts Mk 3 Golf/vento/corrado..#603440081(recond)....£180...................euro car parts all prices are excluding VAT

i'm afraid you'll have to bite the bullet and get a CAT 1 fitted........as without it its hard getting insured.......but as you also have lowered suspension they probably can't/won't quote at all i know.........i'm having a nightmare with getting insurance for my C cos of my mods(inc the coil-overs) and thats with me having CAT 1 alarm/immobiliser fitted too
-
rams, ive had oil temps of 118+ but under 124 on long M-way runs in the 2 years i've owned my VR6.........and so far(*touch wood)have'nt had any problems..........what you have to remember is that the VR engine is quite hot running and it really only is when the temp gets to constantly 130 that you have to begin to worry........believe me i'm really paranoid about oil/water temps with mine............also i believe the optimum operating oil temp is 108(can't remember who stated it but it was someone well-respected in VW circles) also the water temp guage isn't the most accurate either as mine reads approx 100 when it is in fact only about 90(checked using VAG-COM) Takoon,if you are worried about it take it past a well-respected VW specialist and get them to check the cooling system also if you have the original grille fitted check to see if its the "closed" slats or "open" slats one.....as this cheap "mod" brings down the temps a little bit

very true Hans  ...........though some of us aren't as adventurous/patient as you and like things to fit first time with as little or no modification as possible
-
i seem to remember it being approx £1k-£1.5k for a Davia retro-fit......think someone on the e-group enquired about the price about 2 years ago...........also someone else on the e-group retro-fitted climate control using either MK4 Golf or passat parts......it was only recently, well about 4 months ago so if you do a search on the yahoo e-group there should be details of it.......

....or you could try our american cousins for how much the 3rd rear light is........as there was an american-spec SLC at Kames recently and the 3rd rear light is intergrated with the number plate light..though it does look a bit more "clumsier"(AFAIK its a standard US-spec fitment) than the one pictured above......but i'm sure its easier to fit

Hear what you're saying Roddy but the VR6 front end is a lot heavier than a MK3 2.0 8V's! Maybe the shock body has the same part number but the valving inside is different? Kev true mate, but a golf VR6 is only 20kg's lighter than a Corrado VR6,athough fair point both the 8v & 16v GTi's are about 80kg's lighter.......so maybe the valving is different......tbh doubt it is.......guess the best people to ask are koni themselves

 LOL no i didn't i just mentioned the engine options ........

 true GazzaG60 but its the cost of getting there  not so much the distance thats the problem for me.........if i had an unlimited budget i would be down there like a shot :D ......but July has been a bad month financially :( and August is looking more of the same  ........forgot my wedding anniversary is mid-August  so the wife will be wanting a pressie and a card i suppose  .....LOL anyway i'm sure you and the rest of the guys will have a good time and spread the Corrado-Forum word for us...........so enjoy yourselves next week and get those pics up to show us what we all missed

thats the thing i love about german motors kev............all the german motors that i've had to MOT have never failed yet........touch wood  Porsche 924S..............2 MOT's........all passes BMW 318Ti..................2 MOT's........all passes Corrado VR6 storm......2 MOT's........all passes some of the cars that i've had to MOT before "finding the light"(well buying german motors) escort 1.3GL...............2 MOT's.........all fails escort XR3i.................1 MOT...........fail sierra XR4i.................2 MOT'S.........1 pass & 1 fail

right by the sounds of it the garage are being pretty reasonable about it......they have offered to repair the damage they have caused........they should be able to "blend" the repair into the existing sound paint easily enough if they are competant enough....what you are asking from them is what the insurance industry would class as "betterment".......now if i were you i would give them the opportunity of repairing the damage they have caused as long is it is to your satisfaction(the repair that is)or save up the £700 extra they need for the full respray which if they have a good bodyshop/paintshop is a bargain.....though make sure they are prepared to supply you with a free courtesy car and guarantee their paint repair...........just my £0.02p's worth

your welcome  .......though the real credit belongs to Andy Bryant afterall he documented it all and did the diagram :D

absolutely crazy right enough........tho i suppose it is before discount........but i'm sure someone does/will pay full list now here's a thought............for your £33+k you could probably end up with every Corrado engine option and probably get the 2 auto options too 1.8 16v 1.8 8v G60 2.0 16v 2.0 8v 2.9 VR6 with the auto options its a Corrado for every day of the week 8) ...........total Corrado heaven 8) :D :D :D

Any opinions on Raceland stuff then? or is it identical to the Jamex stuff Ant is talking about? I've heard there coilovers are pretty good, but hows their kits? anyone know? try PM'ing john munyard he told me to avoid raceland(well their coil-overs anyway) for very good reasons........i'm sure he'll tell you the "whys & hows"...........i'm not going to bother as you probably won't believe me........btw thats not a cue for any snide/smart-a***or snipey remark

not recently but about 8 years ago when i had my 944 turbo i had some muppet with a bog standard "new" escort 1.6 16v LX(all of 90bhp) challenge me to a race........needless to say he lost........not that i thought he would win  though i have been mugged this year by a K-reg corrolla(not a GTi either  )when he breezed past me at a set of lights, just as they changed while i was still "handbrake on" and it took me quite a bit to catch up with him   very embarrassing -
aye jim it was reet proper bo!  on a separate not tho........it was the local renault dealership that i had my C mot'd at,anyway the wife dropped me off to pick it up and once i'd paid the bill.....which was a "cheap" £30(special offer they have on at the moment) out she pointed out a new renault Espace to me......couldn't believe the price tag it had on it...........£33600 :!:   ......it didn't even have leather either :?
