Fingers crossed, I REALLY need my car back :(
-
it's a 1992 TD golf cl.

ok, so we did this last night and (assuming that we were using multimeter correctly) there is no power going to glow plugs. SO the other half has the day off work today so he's going to check the relay. I don't really understand how the electrics etc work but is there anything else that could stop power getting to the glow plugs??
-
I much prefer to do stuff myself if I can, like you say most parts are cheap, it's the labour that is expensive. I started with little things and then moved on to bigger more difficult tasks. I tend to do more stuff on the golf because I can use the Haynes manual to help, the 'rado's a bit trickier if you don't know what you doing but there are plenty of really helpful people on here who can give you much helpful advice. However, like herisites said, some things have to be done at a garage unless you have the correct tools/equipment

ok, will check the glow plug relay tonight.

I don't think I will be trying the injector trick then as I've never injected myself with any substance before and don't fancy starting with diesel  I have looked in the haynes and it says to get to the fuel pump you have to take the cylinder head off which certainly seems like too much hassle to me. I will have a more thorough read of the haynes tonight to see if I can find a manual pump anywhere. I may just take (tow) it to a garage and see if they can find a leak, I don't fancy messing about under the car in this weather!

Yes it turns over just doesn't fire up. And yes, lots of smoke from exhaust. When you say ignition problem, what exactly do you mean? What parts should I be checking? There are no visible leaks and I can't see any evidence of diesel on the driveway. And no, it hasn't been siphoned out by some pikey, there's at least a quarter of a tank in there. I will check the power to the glow plugs tonight although I'm pretty sure that they're ok. I can see air bubbles in the fuel line going in to the filter, is this likely to be a hole in the pipe somewhere or could air get in somewhere else??

Not sorted yet. :( I have a part to pick up from garage today but I don't think it will help. TBH, I'm fed up with it, it's only a crappy runabout which I got as a temporary car about 18 months ago. I haven't got money to throw at it until we find out what's wrong with it. Could take it to a garage and it could turn out to be a minor thing or it could turn out to cost me loads of money, I'm not prepared to take the risk. If I can't get it working tonight then I'm tempted to just ring the scrappy to come and get it.

The "Oh My God what's wrong with my car NOW thread..&qu

Our VR is making a strange noise from the front wheel too. We just cannot find out where it's coming from. Garage said CV joint is ok, wheel bearings have been done, just putting up with it for the time being hoping that something doesn't fall off  -
I can't really describe what the unit looks like but there is the arm with the float that measures the level in the tank but there is also another part to it which is what I assumed was a pump, but I don't know. I am going to get the new unit anyway, in a vain hope that it may do something! If this doesn't fix it, then I'm just going to admit defeat and get a garage to sort it out and put the bill on the credit card  Cheers for all your suggestions chaps :D

I wish I read your post earlier, I have just ordered a new bloody sender from the stealers, and they want payment before ordering so thats £60 down the drain  Had a look at filter and drained a bit off. There are a few clear fuel lines in the engine bay and they have fuel in but also air is coming from somewhere. How is the fuel pumped from the tank to the engine then? (I assumed it was the sender unit as it has pipes with fuel going in and out of it).

I am really skint right now, trying to avoid a garage if possible. Plus don't have break down cover so would have to pay someone to tow it to garage.

I really have no idea about anything!!! It could be many different things and I have no idea where to start and I need my car back for work :confused4: Haven't checked fuel filter and I have had the car 18months so maybe that is the first thing to try.....
-
Cheers Walesy, I vaguely remembered that you'd had a problem with your diesel a while back but was too lazy to do a search (sorry  ) You said yours was the fuel lines. What did you do/where do you look to check these??
-
I know it's not corrado related but my diesel golf (mk3 TD) won't start and I want to pick some peoples brains about it!! The car turns over but won't start. We thought it may be the glow plugs but we changed them and it didn't help  So, then we had a look at the fuel sender unit that sits in the top of the fuel tank. We tested it with a multimeter (like it said to do in Haynes) and the resistance was supposed to vary when we moved the sender arm thing and it didn't. (However, I don't know too much about multimeters so may not have been using it right  ) I'm going to get a new sender unit anyway to see if it helps but does anyone have any other ideas??

Whereabouts in the south are you? I'm sure there will be a forum member somewhere near you that wouldn't mind you having a look/sit/drive in theirs :)

Yeah but you can see cars in each colour on that fella's link at the top. Yeah! What he said!![/quote:e5ca1] ditto :D I like that you can see each colour so you can see what it looks like on the car 8)

lol, perhaps

My old valver had the most paint chips I have ever seen on a car and the previous owner was a man
-
yeah but I didn't have a 'rado until after I met him. Actually until I met him I had no idea what one was  . He infected me with his obsession

cheers :)

I got a quote from Chipsaway about a year ago and they were quite reasonable, can't remember the exact quote but it was £100 or so which was for quite a few chips and a massive key scratch down one side. I didn't use them though because when I looked at the form afterwards they had my car down as a Toyota Corolla, even though the woman filling in the form was standing at the back of my car at the time. and sorry but I don't know of any alternatives.

[/i] No they didnt, it isnt on ebay per chance the one you saw? VW definetly did not do a black one[/quote:7b9ac] Yeah if someone's trying to sell you a black Storm then they're either trying to get one over on you or they're really stupid and someone has got one over them in the past and made them believe their car is a Storm :? EDIT: I suppose someone could have had their Storm resprayed :?:

Better get my address changed soon then! Who do I have to notify?

omg, how many people are thinking of selling up??? there'll be no one left on here with a 'rado. To be honest though, we're probably selling up after Christmas!! I really don't want to sell up but we don't have the time or money to sort it out. Having just bought a house we have other things to spend money on. We paid 3k for our VR about 18 months ago and we wouldn't get that sort of money if we sold but I'd rather cut our losses now before we lose any more money on it. I wouldn't regret selling it because it's the sensible thing to do but I would miss her
