  1. Right Ive just spoken to the fella doing my head rebuild and he says that two of my exhaust valves have stem wear. He said that they aren't to bad and could compensate with the appropriate guide liner. He also told how much it was going to cost me, a grand basically! But I believe he is going to do a very good flow job, well it wants to be for that sort of money! He told me that new exhaust valves are £100 or something silly because there sodium filled! I was a bit concerned about spending this sort of money and not replacing the exhaust valves for them to burn out after a few thousand miles! He had a look at his supplier for racing valves but the vr6 wasn't listed. Does anyone know where I could get some aftermarket racing valves fairly cheap? There are some listed on GSF web site, but there only £8 + vat so I don't really know what the quality would be like in comparison? maybe I should just stick with the original valves, as its already going to cost me an arm and a leg? He did say that after hes finished with it I should get it remapped straight away, which is more money lol !
  2. AB, just out of interest, how much did the paint job set you back? Sweet job by the way, the car looks great !
  3. Just a quick one. Do I use standard torques for the bolts?
  4. Ok that makes me feel a bit better. Should I carry out the running in after putting on my rebuilt head, but with new lifters?
  5. Ive just read an article on installing cams on the Puma Racing website, and it says that when you start the car you should not let it idle and keep the revs up. I'm just wondering If I may of caused my head damage due to not carrying out a bedding in procedure? Does it really affect things that much if you don't carry out the bedding in process? Reading this has concerned me a bit! http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/cam1.htm
  6. It had a new block and pistons about 35,000 ago.
  7. Thats because about an hour and a half later the bay looked like this lol!
  8. Yeah they were a bit tight and fiddly, but using a bit of windowlean down the ends of the pipes as kevhaywire recomended, I got them on!
  9. It did have a brand new block and pistons with new bearings about 35,000 ago so I would think its fine. It looks fine anyway!
  10. Right Ive stripped the head and found a burnt inlet valve seat on number 5! The valve didnt look that bad but Ill find out for sure when its inspected and rebuilt. Does anyone think that it might no be able to be re-seated as I know the seats cant be replaced on these heads? Didnt really come across any problems when stripping apart from Im going to need a new cam sprocket bolt and coil pack bolts, along with the gaskets and seals etc. Im probably going to go for new bronze stems, exhaust valves, multi angled seats and port polish/gas flow. He has asked me to send the lower inlet mani for port matching plus all the old gaskets for guides for porting I suppose. The fella is based in south Ireland and will be picking in up from the ANC depot on the 24th to carry out the work and send it back. I really cant wait to slap it back on!
  11. Right the heads coming off tomorrow ,get to see whats up with number 5! Hopefully the damage isnt to bad as I want to get it rebuilt, cant wait for it to get back either, should be a top job! Ill post up pics of my findings.
  12. PhatVR6, does the TT hubs with the shortened struts link up with the standard rack with bigger ends? And how would you connect the arb? Are you saying that you would need to get some eccentric top mounts for this setup? Im really interested on how you get on! Im going to start work on my suspension and brakes next year and this sounds like stuff good to me ! :)
  13. I fitted some braided high pressure hoses from Demon tweeks at 24" with ionised clip covers. They fitted with out problems and look very nice! They were a bit tight in the clips but I managed to use them.
  14. PhatVR6, is there any modifying needed to fit the TT hubs and wishbones? Can you just join up the corrado rack to this setup? And I'm guessing you'll have to use different struts, will the TT's fit ? Great stuff by the way, keep us posted!
  15. If you don't want to wrap it you could always coat it like I'm probably going to do. It is a bit pricey though! http://www.camcoat.u-net.com/Exhausts.htm http://www.zircotec.com/exhaust.html
  16. Nice one guys! Looks like my head might be coming of soon, bent inlet valve or something !
  17. Im sure Ive heard somewhere that you can use a mk4 copper head gasket on the older 12v's ,am I right ? If so does anyone have the part number please, that would be lovely?
  18. Right I brought myself a comp tester today and retested number 5. It measured the same result of 9.5 ! One thing I did notice is when turning the engine whilst testing the engine was making a chirping noise that was quite loud! This noise but quieter also happens when I switch off the ignition after driving. I was just wondering if this could be the sound of air coming back up through the intake ?
  19. Yes the test was carried out by the book. kevHaywire, yeah I was thinking that, its just I wanted to know if it would make a noticeable difference to the running? I want the car to be running sweet for the remap as I don't want to travel all that way for Vince to say there's a problem!
  20. No but I have been advised so I shall carry out the test again this week, fingers crossed!
  21. Its located at the bottom right of the board, relay 167.
  22. As some of you may know Ive had a few running problems with my vr ,which I think Ive almost got to the bottom of now. Although yesterday I decided to give it a compression test and heres the results. 1)13 bar 3)12ish bar 5)9.5 bar! 2)12.5ish bar 4)12 bar 6)12.5 bar The thing that concerns me is the cylinder 5 ! The rest are very good ,in the Bentley it states 11-13 for a new engine and 7.5 minimum wear limit. Maximum permissable difference between all cylinders is 3 bar. Im I worrying about nothing as apart from the number 5 its got pretty good compression? Please someone put my mind at rest !
  23. Have you checked the isv and cleaned it? After replacing mine it know starts fine and doesn't cut out which is good! Mine was seized almost shut and had about a 3mm gap! I did also replaced a few other things i.e ecu relay, cam position sensor and cleaned the terminals on the fuel pump relay. I think the isv was the main culprit though, but your problem could be something different. The trouble with cutting out is it can be caused by a number of things, so if it doesn't come up on the vag com its really a process of elimination I'm afraid.
