  1. Spoke with Vince, he thinks it sounds like a bearing shell from oil starvation. Maybe it was my oil pump making the noise which i thought was the PAS pump. Strange as that was a new unit from VW. I think i'll be taking engine out and taking the whole lot to stealth.
  2. Bottom end was a new unit, i took that to stealth with new pistons/rings and asked them to use my old crank and rods, and told them anything else that needs renewing they can buy in the best quality they would use and fit them. Thanks for all the info, very helpful, i still feel i'm learning as i go. Its starting to look like i might need to talk to stealth about the bottom end.
  3. Slept on it (not the corrado), but thinking about what happened and i'm none the wiser. Something definitely broke, very rough sounding engine and ran lumpy, and the sound like something fell off the car or has been flung around inside the engine or bay. Couple of questions. DO i need the head skimmed again, now that i've removed it? Will probably fit a new headgasket if i put this engine back together, whats the metal one people recommend?
  4. Yeah i have a magnetic sump plug, was metal on that, not lots but more than last oil change, was some of it when running in and doing the first oil change. And the stuff left in sump wasn't picking up with the magnet. Will try the crank tomorrow, cheers.
  5. Now I'm confused. Got the head off and can't see anything wrong. All valves look ok and so do the tops of pistons. Will turn it over on the crank pulley so i can see all the bores. But all look ok. What are the symptoms of something wrong with the crank? Can't for the life of me think what the noise of things falling off were?
  6. No they seem to be alloy. Got as far as this tonight. Head studs are all loosened off. Will lift head off tomorrow
  7. Techtonics tuning do a nice downpipe. Slightly wider bore. I bought one on black friday.
  8. Might just be a bit of a valve, i've had about a 1/3 of a valve break off before on a previous car.
  9. It just started making a loud noise, at first i thought it was the engine noise from the V8 merc behind me, but then realised it was mine (whenever i got to about 4000rpm), Then it just dropped power and made a bit of a bang, i thought i could hear bits of metal hitting the road but i'm started to think it was a valve going down the exhaust pipe. I'll fix it, not sure what route to take until i see whats wrong, would be interesting to know what and why this has happened. At the moment i'm blaming the head i bought (was about the only part i could have doubts about)
  10. Started to take engine apart, got rocker cover off and couldn't see anything wrong, cams looked ok and the timing chain still tight, didn't take cams out so couldn't really see if the valves were still there. Then took sump off, seems to have quite a bit of metal flakes in there. Oil seemed very gloopy as well. Looked up into the bottom end from underneath and couldn't see anything wrong, but i'm not 100% sure what i'm looking for. Think i'll take the head off next.
  11. Looks like alarm to me, they are usually all black wires
  12. Shame about the wheels, they don't sit well.
  13. I use trim tape for the body fixings, should be a bit neater http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/291208879752?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=122&chn=ps&googleloc=1007041&poi=&campaignid=207297426&device=c&adgroupid=13585920426&rlsatarget=pla-146857550226&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=122&ff19=0
  14. Thanks for the offer mate, but i think it terminal tbh. Going to quickly build an engine up from all the other spares i have (just so i can keep driving it this summer) and then probably get Stealth to fix this one. It was a new 2.8 block so hoping if the bottom end is damaged i can always get it bored to 2.9
  15. Yeah coolant seems all ok. Starts and runs, but sounds like something hitting something inside the engine. Was a noise at the time that sounded like bits of metal falling off the car, which i think might have been something going down the exhaust.
  16. Nah. Was about to buy one but I'm sure from the noises it's already a head off job. Will see if the dashcam picked anything up.
  17. Only got as far as taking the spark plugs out. They aren't damaged but cylinder one has a sort of rusty coloured dust on it, almost red looking. Definitely seemed to be running on not all 6 cylinders and big loss of power. Noise was so bad i can only assume something really bad. Quite sure its an engine out and rebuild sort of bad. World be nice if its only head damage and the pistons are all ok. Felt like a valve going to me
  18. Broke it properly :( am still in shock and not reached the mourning phase yet. But new engine has done something. I suspect a valve has broke off and gone into the cylinder. Or a con rod snapped. Not sure but sounds screwed and i had to drive it about 15miles home like that.

I bought the cheap ebay vcds setup for about £15 and couldn't get it to connect, required mucking about with pc settings etc, i gave up and bought the Ross tech and its been great, use it quite a bit on other peoples cars.
  20. Yeah, you can normally tell the VR6 one as the rad sits at an angle, so slam panel is a bit different on the top bit over the rad.
  21. Crikey, they don't half put the prices up fast! Was about 6months ago i bought mine and looks to have doubled in price.
  22. Yeah, pretty much everything on engine was new, was only the PAS pump that was original, which is why i first thought of that.
  23. Yeah, it bled quite easily and settled down. The noise sounds like a bearing noise.
  24. Well replaced the pump. All went well, apart from me thinking it only had 4 bolts holding it on and spending a while hitting the pump with a lump of wood and hammer until i realised it was 5 bolts  I still have the noise, so guessing now it wasn't the pump. Not a waste, steering feels a bit lighter and original pump was 21yrs old. Not sure what is making the noise, i can't pin point it, but something to do with the aux belt side, alternator is quite new, water pump was brand new from VW, tensioner was also new but INA brand. Hoping it not engine, i will run engine without the belt to see.
