Well the car seems to ride much better on standard springs and the good gas dampers. Those GMAX spring ruined the ride, I can't believe they sell them. I guess Eibach etc springs are better. Only the difference between front and rear damping rates now worries me slighty. I may replace the front dampers with a set of monroe gas assisted to match at some point in the future.

My previous C VR6 was a late 1993 L plate - OBD I and coilpack. Current VR is a late 1992 K plate - OBD I and Dizzy.

Any suspension experts out there? I removed the GMAX -40mm lowering springs from the rear of my C yesterday to go back to standard (the ride was awfull with the GMAX). The setup I had to replace my rear suspension with was red Sachs shocks with std springs. When I pulled the existing suspeonsion off I noticed it had Monroe Gas dampers. Now the existing Monroe gas dampers looked much newer than the red sachs ones so I kept those and installed. When it was all apart I noticed that the gas dampers felt "sprung" (expected) and resisted movement much more (not expected really) than the SACHS dampers which felt a bit limp in comparison. Is this normal? should gas dampers be much stiffer than normal ones? Should I get matched gas dampers for the front to match? I guess the SACHS ones looking much older could be a bit tired, but the difference was pretty big. If you bounce the front of the car it has more bounce to it than the rear (presumably because of the increased damping on the rear?) Would this unmatched damping cause me issues? I heard VR6's came with gas dampers on the rear as standard - were the OEM rears more damped than the fronts too?

Defo get a good headunit and good components. Ebay is great for both - I paid £100 for my Alpine 9812rr (retail £300+) and £35 for the Vibe SA 50 components (retail £80). Don't make the mistake of judging stereo equipment on the supposed power ratings. Its quality rather than quantity you want.

I had a pioneer DEh-p77mp (4x50W) headunit driving VIBE 70W components (tweeters in dash and woofers in doors) and it sounded superb. I run some ebay special 6x4s in the back for rear full which sound reasonable. I then stupidly sold that headunit and bought a cheap Tevion 4x50W Mosfet headunit for the USB functionality. This sounded ARSE - an inidcation that just cos it puts out 4x50W doesn't mean its any good. Thinking the internal amp would be rubbish in that I used a 200W Pioneer amp and it still sounded arse. Proof that you need a good source no matter how good your amp and speakers. Now I run an Alpine 9812RR headunit (a 9812rb but in black rather than silver) 4x60W head unit. This sounds so good without the amp that i dropped the amp. So bear in mind that you need a decent headunit, I think its very important as the source of the sound must have a reasonable amp in it (like the p77mp or a good Alpine).

This is what must have happened - the bearing in the old (recent) one still feels "stiff" like it is full of grease, but does have a bit of play. I just only hope they will actually refund me..... I just noticed in their small print that they may pay labour to replace faulty parts, too late now and I imagine thats quite unlikely. -

The original VAG one I took out of my engine had a metal impellor and the ***//%%$£ CIRCOLI EuroCarParts water pump has a metal impellor which is why i thought it was reasonable quality. I now notice ECP also sell a more expensive one too. Its now replaced with another metal impellor pump but I can't remember the brand, from my local motorfactor (£33). Took all of 40mins in the work car park, I've just got to go out and fill it with coolant when the sealant has gone off later this afternoon. The moral of the story? Go to VAG, at least for critical or time consuming parts. EDIT: Heads up for anyone doing this, FEBI (usually excellent quality, actually OEM quality stuff) pumps from http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id=586 are only £22 -

Yeah I did last time, but this pump has failed - water is coming through one of the condensation holes. I have picked up a new pump from the motorfactors this morning as I don't have time to order in one from VW. This is another brand again, hopefully better, I'm hoping to get it changed in my dinner hour (and a half) as I have a journey to make tonight...... How do people manage to get trade prices at VW? I guess you are in the trade? They never give me any discount even though I'm there buying parts every week and am a member of clubgti, corrado club, forums etc etc. -

Well the eurocarparts CIRCOLI water pump (£20) has failed on me. Noticed a similar leak today, whipped the airbox out, undid mount bolts, jacked up engine, detensioned the tensioner, whipped the pump pulley off and there sat grinning at me was the 3 month old water pump. I gave it a little spin and water came out of one of the little holes in it. There must be some kind of valve behind the holes? Is a waterway blocked?!! or is it just an cr@ppy waterpump? -
The original fuel hose is helpfully 7.5mm - what best top replace it with - 7 or 8mm internal diameter fuel hose?

I don't have etka and can only bring up the early style dash on vagcat. Any chance someone can look up the part number of the dash blank that gioes in the section with the ABS light and foglight switches on a late dash? The double width blank needed (not the single one next to the heated screen switch). Cheers.

I take it thats the unfitted uncompressed length of the spring? Mine measures 355mm front and 320mm rear so my suspicions are confirmed that it has -40 mm springs on the rear. Standard rears are on the way!

Right - thanks for your input everyone, Filter for a late golf VR6 has arrived from GSF (free next day delivery for web orders!) and looks to be the correct one for my filter cap! I hope theres no difference in the engine part of the filter housing.........

Has anyone heard of a r32 lump run on megasquirt? And whats this about an alfa throttle body to get round the drive by wire? If you can use the above 2 then that would be the simplest and cheapest conversion - keep your current gearbox and pedal box and just get the custom downpipe from storm, make up a megasquirt loom and board. It sounds almost easy......... I've just got my standard VR6 running spot on (woop!) so won't be doing this anytime soon but its worth bearing in mind if anything should happen in the future.

Couple of tips: The slider pins aren't available on their own only as a complete carrier unit. So its a scrapyard job (early Mk3 GTI/VR6 C G60) if yours are foobarred. The rubber slider boots are available as are new caliper seals from VAG. Every carrier bolt I have ever taken off Mk2s or corrados has been stuck fast or rounded previously. A 12 point metric socket (I forgot the size) socket hammers perfectly over it and lets you use a breaker bar. Probably best to get a couple of replacements in before starting - the replacements use a larger size allen key head presumably to stop them rounding.

Thanks for that, it's confirmed my thoughts that lowering springs are fitted to the rear only. How odd. Mines running on 15" BBS Solitudes from a storm or Mk3 Vr6.

No. ABV023000 An these 2 for golf VR6: MMH932/5X OIL FILTER G3 VR6 1/92 >11/95 (>Eng. No. AAA176888) MMHU932/6N OIL FILTER G3 VR6 11/95 >12/97 (Eng.No. AAA176889>) So it looks like I need the late golf filter as the part number is different (its also a bit cheaper :) ) Will order one now. Nice of the previous owner to let me know about that one .......

Righto, just been to the dealer. I had him search for a 92 Corrado VR6 and a 95 VR6 and the filters were the same part number. It looks like corrado VR6's ABV always had the metal ended filter. It also looks like I have a cap and matching plastic ended filter from some other VR6, not really a surprise as the cap is easily overtightened and damaged. I guess I'll have to trawl GSF for a golf VR6 with a filter with a differnt part number to a corrado and cross my fingers.

Just pulled the oil filter off my VR6 and my new filter doesn't fit. Attached to the big black filter housing cap is a tube with holes in that goes up the middle of the filter. The filter itself has a bigger hole in the middle. and plastic ends. Its marked Hengst and VW and has a VW part number. Now the replacement filter I have is the same as I've used on previous VR6s has metal caps either end and a smallish hole down the middle with one way valve. There is no whay this will fit my car.... weird. I was pushed for time so had to put the old filter back, I wish I had took a picture or written the part number down. Euro car parts only list one filter for the VR6 engine - the wrong one for my car which i already have. I'm going to the stealers this PM so will investigate this further! This must be another dizzy engine difference!

An allen key also will fit those bolts, can't remember what size though give it a go if you have a set, its what I always use!

An extensive forum search has revealed a lot of different ride heights! The most common measurement that crops up for pre-1994 Corrados (all VR6s, G60s, 8v and 16v are the same) is about 36cm fromt he centre of the wheel to the arch front and rear. Post-94 cars (16v and VR6) are higher. If anyone reads this and has an early car on standard suspension that isn't too tired (prob less than 100k best!) and wouldn't mind measuring that would be great.

Does anyone have the measurement from the centre of the wheel to the centre of the wheel arch for the front and rear of a standard early VR6 on level ground? Early VR6's (pre 1994?) had a lower ride height than late ones. The reason I ask it that my VR6 appears to point slightly nose upwards and from all accounts should point slightly nose down. Looking at the suspension - the rear springs are red and the fronts black, leading me to believe there are lowering springs fitted to the rear but not the front. I have a set of suspension on its way from a similar age car but just wanted to check that the front is running at standard height and the rears are indeed lowered. Cheers.
