  1. Interestingly, it runs a good deal cooler than it used to when motorway cruising. Haven't managed to do any fuel consumption comparisons though. It does feel this much different though.
  2. Alternatively, there are a couple of very handy cast-in lugs on the front lower edge of the gearbox which are ideal if you have a bottle jack.
  3. The mk3 items will fit straight on. Can't comment on the Seat brakes.
  4. Wot dowel??? I have a selection of less than perfect* late switches, but they all look identical? *broken.
  5. New (genuine) dampers, bumpstops and top mounts all by themselves will work wonders...
  6. You need to fabricate additional bracket(s) to support the heater controls if you're fitting later components into an earlier dash. The genuine items are very flimsy and are rivetted on to the dash shell.
  7. Sounds like both the water pump and the thermostat housing are leaking...
  8. The price difference is not worth the difference in quality. Buy genuine items.
  9. On the join betewwen the engine and gearbox - it "looks" at the rotation of the flywheel. It tells the engine management system how fast the engine is turning over. Or do you mean the thing that tells the speedometer how fast the car is going?
  10. What engine has your car got? The belt went on my 16v (6 weeks after I bought it...). Even though the engine was at low revs and I got the clutch in very quickly it still needed new valves. Do a compression check...
  11. Close... 1995-on Golf VR6 has 288mm brakes that are a straight swap. The exact same parts are used on: Golf 1995-98 Vento 1995-98 Passat 1994-2003 (use the disks for the Mk3 Golf with these though) CoxyLaad - your brakes are off a 4motion...
  12. Got those, but they aren't a straight swap like the 288mm items - you need spacers.

    New car!!

Sunroof sounds like a broken cable. You'll also need the repair kit for the "water guide plate" on that side as it's what caused the cable to break. Total cost in bits is ~£70.
  14. VW do some good ones - and they're cheap to buy. Mk3 Golf 288mm front brakes are the ticket - and fit under 15" wheels (just...)
  15. The bit you've bolted on the bottom act as the damper for the standard mount - as weel as absorbing extension of the mount. Bit worried about the lateral movement comment - it bolts onto the subrame using the 2 big bolt holes in the picture so there shouldn't be any lateral movement...
  16. Put it in reverse buy pusjing/pulling on the levers at the gearbox end of the linkage. But start looking at the circlips on the shifter to see if they're still in place.

    coilovers

The damping on the Bilsteins is too stiff. Fit the Koni's instead.
  18. Interesting - not had one of those on either of the 3 dashes I've removed/refitted or replaced. Your car must be even more unique than you thought...
  19. Adjusting knobs are on the back of the headlight casing. Passenger side is easily reach-able. Driver's side needs the covering plate that sits between the headlight casing and airbox removing (it's held on by a single screw on the slam panel.
  20. Well... It's a cable change box, which means that even with no appreciable wear in the linkage you can have a truly horrible shift action. This can be fixed with some simple adjustment - an easy DIY job provided you're patient. Before telling you about that though, how old is the gearbox mount? If that's shot you can have a perfectly adjusted linkage and still have a terrible shift action. Describing the way in which it's bad will help with diagnosis.
  21. Good job you teach PE with spelling like that...
