Jack and axle stands - any recommendations?
Critical_Mass replied to Portent's topic in General Car Chat
i really could do with a low profile jack - tired of having to use scissor jack to lift the car a bit to get the normal jack under. A low profile would be better. -
Come on who is it? Who lives in or near to Garforth in Leeds. My mate keeps seeing a bordeaux or sherry corrado and keeps thinking its me

clocking isnt actually illegal, its only illegal if youre lowering a cars mileage. Places will correct the mileage on clocks for you. But im sure you have to prove mileage through MOT certs or something.

haha Thats the deal Martin..... your move.

Yeah i held the track rod whilst my mechanic wobbled the wheel and there's was sh!t amount of play in it. I'd love to know what they felt like to drive from new.

ECP do one relatively cheap. I bought one and its good quality. But only time will tell.

We should all arrange to go round to his house and park up outside :D ;)

Well checked with my mechanic and theres loads of play in the ball joint. The actual track rods look reasonably ok. Will prob just replace the tie rod ends.
-
Ok another question. Is there any real need to change the arms as they're just metal rods?

Thanks guys i'll look into getting the spanner.

Gonna have to get one of these. WOrse part of working on the car is getting the wheels off and jacking it up onto axle stands.. note to self - buy low profile jack.

Hi all, Car handles like a boat, tramlines all over the place.... hard to keep on a straight line on anything even slightly uneven surface. Found that there's loooads of play in the outer tie rod ends, So... instead of just changing the outer tie rod end, im going to also change the inside and jsut go the whole hog and replace the arm too. How easy is this? Is it as simple as undoing the nut on either end and splitting the ball joint with a splitter. THen fit new tie rod and replacing the nut? Does the nut holding the ball joint to the hub and also the inner one both need replacing either side. Or are they able to be reused? Can anyone provide me a step by step guide.. or point me in the direction of one? Also best place to get the parts? Cheers all Gaz

Surely if power is lost from the battery, even just due to loose connection, no lights would flash and engine would cut out due to no spark?? COuld it be the alternator on the way out and you drained the battery - wouldnt take long to drain the battery thats not been charged by the alternator. Maybe its an intermittent alternator issue.

Dave16v is in the process of making a stainless steel one, just so you know. Ive seen his first attempt and it looks good. Dont know exactly when he'll taking orders but if he does you wont have to worry about the elbow ever again. Gruvenpart do do a metal one, but its expensive.

:D

Would be odd if they're different as the engines are practically the same. though it is Vw we're talking about.

Wullie - shame on you, as that would be such a waste! I dont see the attraction to having rather dark window tints, what are people wanting to hide??? My cousin has them on the back windows and the rear screen and it makes it hard for him to reverse and has bumped into a bollard before. Then there's those idiots/morons who have really dark windows and then are also wearing sunglasses! = madness

question for those that run headlight loom /relays
Critical_Mass replied to steveo29's topic in Engine Bay
Yeah unplug the yellow bar thing on the side of the passenger wing next to the headlight. Mine were bare, but they got water in them eventually and i went out one night to find the headlights on full blast  Also another time they failed to work for the MOT. I eventually wrapped them in a plastic bag and tucked it behind the light. Some have used a tupperwear like box and modified it to hold the relays and they be sealed
