  1. In my view the best way to keep an engine bay cool is to have a small engine in a totally open engine bay just so long as your rad is able to cope with the smaller through put of air, just like on my Mk2 8v, loads of air all around it and a large rad for the engine size. However when you start cramming an engine bay full of a big engines and bits you get far less air movement around it. This is typical of most modern cars and they get round the problem by channeling the air through the engine bay using undertrays and cowlings etc. This ensures that there is a constant through put of air through the radiator and over the exhaust manifolds by creating air pressure where you want it. Undertrays also have the benefit of creating a smooth underside to the car and help keep the mechanicals clean so they are kind of a no brainer these days. :D Matt, the reason that bit of plastic is there over your airbox intake (fixes onto the slam panel behind the headlight) is to channel the air into the intake (ramair effect), take that away and you reduce the amount of air being forced into the airbox. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pisto ... athing.svg
  2. Hey Matt, just been looking at your thread, those brakes look tasty :D When's it back from the bodyshop then? Collignite is the best stuff for lazy people, it lasts ages  I've been thinking of ways to improve the airflow through the engine bay (air through the rad and out under the exhaust and sides of the bonnet), and also to keep the bay clean. I bought this Mk2 diesel undertray copy a while back for £45 posted. Not the best quality but it should do. Looks like that it will fit with a small amount of trimming, and a bit extra added to the front. Eventually I'll make a proper aluminium one though. The Also been using some black sealing foam tape to prevent air getting in around the lights. You can't really see any of it but it should all help.

  4. Glad you all like it  I think OEM+ is a nice compramise between modding a car and restoring it. My aim is for someone who had never seen a Corrado before not realise it has been modified... Kev, It did cross my mind to do that, I even printed out a 'footprint' of an A3 3.2 airbox (same style as a Mk5 but bigger MAF fitting), but you end up with this long skinny space between the top mount and the headlight that I think looks a bit odd. That's not to say the TT airbox fits perfectly, it's far from perfect. But it would have been good for weight distribution, every little helps!
  5. I love it mate, as you know I've been doing it for a while now and I never get bored of it. I've been contracting to a company in Weybridge for the past year. Since then I've designed this seat that you put into military vehicles that absorbs the blast impact from IED's and mines to help save the soldiers spines etc. It's really interesting and I'm learing new stuff all the time, and I've never gone to work thinking that my job was tedious like many others do, I count myself as very lucky. But like you say, the best places to work for have the fast turnaround, screen on day one, made on day two, back to screen on day three to fix the cock up you made on day one
  6. Cool thread! Not enough posts about the trailer though. :D
  7. Welcome back Jon, your cad skills have come a long way!! Have you been using Solidworks or Catia?
  8. You might be a little disapointed with the sound :( , it's not far different from a standard VR! But the engine is much quieter, you can hardly hear it running, the injectors seem to make the most noise. Plus I'm getting rid if the big oval tailpipe, that's going to be a cut off plain pipe for the more OE look.
  9. In all honesty if you could take a 2.9 out, you could fit a 3.2 in. You don't have to faff about in the same way I have. Pete Griff had his done and dusted in a couple of months! Love the pic in your sig Kempy.
  10. Cheers Kip, the crappy phone pics make it look better than it is in real life though, and typical that in a month or so it'll be MOT'd, just as the summer finishes!! This build has taken me so long it's embarassing  Definately have to meet up sometime, but I'll have to get it MOT'd first! Thanks buddy, you should get into doing stuff for yourself though, it's way cheaper in the long run :) Oh yes, the thread has moved   Cheers pal :D Vid as soon as I get my HTC back from being repaired....
  11. Hey Kris, why of course :D Cheers Jaime Yeah i found that to begin with, then I found that you have to put it in at the right angle and it goes straight in. It clips over the top of the windscreen scuttle trays (the original one might go under I can't remember), where isn't contoured right for the end 70mm but I can live with that. However it might also have something to do with my ECU being slimmer than the original one? Either way I'll get you a PN next time I'm out on the car.
  12. Cheers pal, The scuttle tray is one of the hard plastic type which are a lot more sturdy, I thought they would all fit though.
  13. Quick update on an afternoons work.... A quick machine polish of the whole car after a few years of total paintwork neglect followed by some collinite wax. passat climatronic wiring diags.pdfDSC00281.JPG[/attachment:2ft6a56f]climatronic wiring-Golf from May 01.pdfDSC00279.JPG[/attachment:2ft6a56f] Then off with the bonnet to get the old sticky residue from the sound proofing off with some petrol. Then a good bit of soapy water and a rinse, waxoyl in the chambers and more collinite on the surfaces you see bring it up a treat. Stick on the new VW soundproofing and re-route the washer jet tubing to the other side to my washer bottle. 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdfDSC00282.JPG[/attachment:2ft6a56f] Stick on the late Mk2 Scuttle tray, fits a treat with no mods.DSC00283.JPG[/attachment:2ft6a56f]
  14. It's best to mount the relays inside the car on top of the fusebox, and use the original wires going to the headlights, but relayed. You need a good feed to the fusebox though.
  15. hope this helps! http://www.howstuffinmycarworks.com/Fue ... lator.html
  16. All discs warp if you give them enough abuse :D If you hammer the brakes and then park up the car, your pad can touch the disc where it cools at a different rate to the rest of the disc. This is a common cause of it. You can straighten the disc again by hammering the brakes again and letting it cool making sure the pad isn't toughing, but it only works half the time.
  17. Ok, 1. You are still in your 20's. 2. Your parents have three houses between them. 3. You are looking to settle down in a coupleof years or so. 4. The housing market is set to depreciate for the forseable future. There is only one thing wrong with your dilemma. You have the wrong digits. 993 is the answer you've been looking for. :D 993_TURBO_S_DSC05389.jpg[/attachment:1ss7ckhu] Seriously. 996's are depreciating, 993's are appreciating. Ok so they (996) are a slightly better car (earlys exempt), I'm not denying it, but the 993's are and will always be worth a bit more. They are the last of the true 'purists' 911 and will always be banded as such. Buy a house when you sell the 993, have fun whilst you are young and be the better off for both decisions. Then I'll whip your arse in my C32 turbo....
  18. Thanks for the reccomendations guys, screwfix is just down the road which is handy :thumb right:
  19. Ahh gutted now mate!! But I knew that if we stayed much longer we would have two crying children on our hands so i quit whilst I was ahead :D Still, I'd have loved to have seen that, although we did get to see that 458 out on the road giving it beans :luvlove: Must save up one day! Don't worry it'll probably be going into the bodyshop whils't your away, so you won't miss anything!!
  20. I've had it with the foot pumping method!! Yeah I have at my old mans house where I'd be doing it, and there seems to be a lot of very similar kits out for hooking up to one, I'll probably just pick my favourite...
  21. I would like to get a decent vaccum brake bleeding kit, as i always put off bleeding my brakes because it's such a PITA. I've been meaning to get one to make it a quicker job. Has anyone got any thoughts on a good kit or any experiences? Budget £80
  22. Right, time for an update! The car's been up at Jon's workshop for the last 6 months or so, during that time progress has been slow due to both of us having other commitments, and most of the work required has been down to Jon doing the wiring for me, which is now just about complete. The car's now running  , the engine's so quiet it's unreal, the Jetex exhaust is quiet too, just spot on. I'll get a video up soon enough. Loads of fault codes which were to be expected, stuff like the steering angle sensor etc, for which I need to send the ECU to VAG doctor. I can't get the floor mounted pedal to work with my ECU, but I'm going to get a proper R32 one in there, the one I've been using is one Pete Griff kindly lent me to use as a mock up but it's a bit broken. My Audi one is a hanging pedal, but it wants to mount just where the fusebox is so I don't really want to use it. It looks like the secondhand ABS unit I bought and so lovingly restored has a duff pump motor on it! So I've got to swap that over, means brake fluid everywhere, I'm going to invest in a proper vaccum brake bleeding kit for that job though. Still to do... Alarm Replace ABS unit (maybe for a TT unit but not sold on that) Middle Exhaust mount Washer bottle strap. Sort out rev counter signal Stronger airbox mount. Sort out some sort of fan controller, need to speak to CrazyDave about that but keep forgetting... Full bolt check Sort my seats out!! I test fitted the drivers one in there, and they are a bit too wide at the top and it inteferes with the seatbelt, so need to sort that out with the jigsaw...Comfy though! Headliner and pillar trims have been covered in dark grey alcantara, still have to put them in.... Chop tailpipe off the exhaust, put on a plain tube end. More stuff I can't remember...
  23. Yes a touch up pen, something thick enough to fill the scratch, somethimes it takes a few goes and some patience, but when finished only you can tell it has been scratched. :D
