Using Oil (and now whats this and why ? )
catch_twotwo replied to catch_twotwo's topic in Engine Bay
I'd love to, but seeing as I've been here for 6 weeks myself, I doubt I can help more than "Ah, dass ist sehr gut danke" Thanks for the info.... Mines not help on with connectors anymore though. Just help on with gravity  still gives me a chance to find the connector on ETKA though ;) I'll have somebody look at the head gasket / rocker cover gasket and pray for the best. -

Right.. well finally got the bonet open (recurring issue)... Took a picture of the leak..... although it's cleaned up you cans ee the marks where it's been leaking over time. Also found 2 other worrying things.... 1) What looks like an earth from the top of the engine to.. well nowhere.. Any idea where this attached oringally.. 2) After finding the earth I had a little look about for things... found this connector which looks like it has been replaced by spade conenctors. The spades are rusted and the connectors aren't holding in anymore. Just loose. Can't really see that in the picture. But any idea what this is as well ? We should make a game of this... "spot what's fallen off my engine now".... no prizes for the winner except my thanks though I'm afaid ;) -

Ok silly question, but how would I check that ? Not that I can seeing as I can't get my bonet open.... *sighs* -

Ok picture of an enginebay with the arrow to location... best I can do right now. -
Well this morning on a long drag back from Austria to Germany I got the shock of my life on a mountain road as the oil light came on accompanied by a nice buzzer sound (Why that's not connected to the lights if you leave them on is above me) Still.. had no pil with me (silly me) so had to take it easy for another 20 minutes till I got to the nearest gas station. Bought myself some nice oily stuff, and did a check. Well in the end I had to put in about 2L of the good stuff to get it within marks again. This is not good as about 3 weeks ago it was checked and was fine. I also noticed a nice oily patch on the mechanics directly benith where the filler cap is. Between the charger and head. This is not from overrun or bad pouring as the engine was nice and clean (well cleanish) a few weeks back. Can't get to take a picture right now... need a second hand to help me get the bonet open (don't ask).. But wanted to ask if anybody knows what this might be. It's in next week with a VAG engineer (not on VAG time though) so good time to get this sorted.... Any ideas ? hope it's not really bad....

I thought the later valvers had the newer topmounts anyway :?: I know that I've just bought newer ones for my G60... but that's because stealers wanted stupid money for the old ones.
-
I've had a few places on mine... but for a 15 year old car it's pretty good. Area's that I've seen are an issue seem to be the door edges, the door sills, near the filler cap (I think) and for me around the front close to the lights.

Easy way to test. Take the uprated loom off the passenger side (it's easier) and plug in the standard plug. then try full beam and see what you get.
-
I guess it all depends on a number of factors.... What road, and tyres etc..... Plus what you've done to the engine. At somepoint in the rev range most engines will be loud. I had a MK IV Goof that was very noisy as it hit 60 and then was quiet as a mouse with sneakers on past 70 (on a track of course ;) )

Strange... If I had the gearbox apart then I'd have changed 1st and 2nd for VR parts. Although somebody once told me that you can change 5th without dropping the box so it might be an easy job. Can anybody confirm this ?
-
The pulley on the charger shouldn't make any difference. Looks like your 5th has been swapped for something different ;)
-
1: I doubt it....... you'd spend too long thinking about it and not go for the gap anyway most likely ;) 2: Of course... Gives me an excuse to upgrade to leather. Although I don't think the hump in the middle would do her many favours....

The vultures are circling ;)

I headbutted my central mirror and it came off without a mark.... But if you want it off then it's bound to be a different case ;)
-
Well if you don't like it we can change gearboxes as that's what I'm after ;)
-
This was my thought as well... Word from 2 local stealers in Munich are that they're %u20AC60 each :x I'll give you a call tomorrow Darren and maybe you can get these in for me with the other things I'm looking at. You must be so sick of me by now

Well I've ended up getting the lot I think :- 4x 357 412 331 A - Suspension strut storage 4x 1J0 412 249 - Axial grooved ball bearing 4x 1H0 412 365 A - Threaded Bush 4x 357 412 319 B - Limit stop 4x N 903 536 03 - Nut 4x 811 412 365 - Threaded Bush Although now looking at this it's seeming stupid amounts. Is there nowhere that sell the standard G60 ones anymore except VAG for €60 a peice ?
-
Ok, to simplify things... Can I use the newer top mounts (357 412 331 A with 1J0 412 249 bearings) with FK Highsport coilovers ?
-
Steve... G-werks sorted me a set of FK's at a good price. Just a thought for the future ;)
-
I've been trying (without much success) to order the following from a Vw stealership here in Münich..... for info it's for a 1990 G60 so when I fit my FK highsports things go nice and smooth ;) I was told (and think this is right) that I need :- 357 412 329 - Front Top Mounts 811 412 365 - Bushs 357 412 331 A - Rear Top Mounts now I've been told the Front top mounts cost %u20AC60 each, rears cost %u20AC20 each although the rears are wrong for my car..... My ETKA says "QTY: 2" does this mean I need 2, or when you order the part you get 2 :?: The language is an issue, so I want to make sure if I order these I'm not getting screwed. Anybody gone through this all before :?: If the parts are that pricey it seems strange I can get none OEM ones from vwspares.co.uk for less than 1/6 of that price. I know they'll not last as long, but that's just silly....
-
Hmm interesting to note that kev.... Although personally I wouldn't know one end of the gearbox from the rear spoiler ;)
-
Yeah got a few of these sort of marks myself now... though I did spin it into a ditch on sunday so that's to be expected I guess
-
Mine is a 1990 G60 from Germany (LHD) and didn't come with them fitted....
-
Different size I'd guess.... The singler wiper has to be smaller as it needs to fit on both sides of the wiper mechanism without hitting the edges of the screen.
