IROC !!! Off to Berlin to see the new Scirocco!!
Henny replied to Tempest's topic in General Car Chat
you've not had another invite by VAG to go and have a look at the new Scirrocco before it's unveiled to the unwashed masses have you? 8) -
check the simple things first... the expansion tank cap seal and pressure release valves are known weak spots and fail with age... ;) When the waterpump on a G60 fails, it tends to pop a seal in the pump itself and lob water out from around the pulley area, not over pressurise the system... You're right that it could be thermostat, but have you checked that both top and bottom hoses are getting warm together, or is one hose always MUCH colder than the other? That'd point at thermostat to me.... A few other quick points to check are: What temps are you running according to the water gauge? - Is it ACTUALLY overheating, or is it just throwing coolant out? Does the fan ever come on? (both speeds?) My G60 started to overheat last sunday and ended up dumping 2 litres of coolant through the cap... turned out that the fuse for the fans had blown due to a worn wire shorting out so the car was running without fans on one of the hottest days I can remember in this country... no wonder she spat her coolant onto the floor! Changed the fuse, topped up the coolant, (sorted the short, and replaced the fuse again! ) and she's been fine for the last 300 miles... 8) Go simple first before spending money... it's a simple rule of thumb, but it doesn't half save some money and heartache! Good luck! 8)

Got the brembo front brakes fitted.... and then nearly went through the windscreen "testing" the new brakes!

8) Yup,intercooler and charger rebuild+chip+pulley are an excellent start and will really bring out the best in the engine.... 8) The best things you can do now to get it even better are to gas flow and port out all of the things the charge flows through and get a free flowing exhaust.... Then you'll REALLY appreciate what these engines can do.... Sounds like your car's a little cracker now though and I for one would like to say that it's nice to read a post complimenting the forum for it's help provided... 8)

uesd to use a similar one from Demon tweeks in my old valver to stop it pinking... worked well and gave a nice boost in power too... 8)

if it's running OK now it's dried out, then you're almost certainly OK... Odds are you just got water into some of the electrics which caused the spluttering. If the engine had "breathed" in any water, you'd know as it'd pretty much die straight out with one hell of a judder and wouldn't want to run again afterwards... I've seen an engine hydraulic lock before and it's not a pretty sight or sound, and the damage it does is unreal... I've never seen an engine bend all 4 con-rods, crack all the pistons and the block and bend valves while being driven normally on a road before... the engine (and subsequently the car) was a write off because of it... (XR3i, so not that much of a loss! )

on the passat one, it's only obvious if you look for it... mine sits about 1mm proud on the leading edge in the middle and about 0.5mm low in the corners... the rear edge is pretty much spot on. I've never fitted a MKIII golf one, but the ones I've seen fitted sit a couple of mm higher in the middle and a good 1mm lower in the front corners... again, the rear edge isn't that far off, but it sat about 1mm proud in the middle. 1 or 2 mm may not sound like a lot, but it does make one hell of a difference to road noise and the look of the roof... :|

Thanks to JMC for a well wrapped and quickly delivered interior light and surround... 8)

Dunno then... Kev? one for you matey!

is the 2.8 bottom end same as 2.9 other than piston size?
Henny replied to rixy's topic in Engine Bay
Them's some HUGE pistons... ;) think you may mean 83mm... ;) -
pop in a bulb, and off it goes.... :)
-
MKIII Golf fits too, but it sits a little high in the middle as the roofline of the golf is more rounded....

standard G60 and VR6 brakes ARE bigger than standard 16V brakes... Is yours a 1.8 or 2.0 16V? If it's a 2.0 you need calipers, carriers and disks from a G60 for a nice brake upgrade... If it's a 1.8 it depends if it's an early one or not as they have a different carrier which is built into the hub so you need to change quite a bit more!

Well, it is in the Wirral... ;) (hides from scouse backlash... )

the plug onto the back of the headlamp is a 4 pin plug, and you CAN'T get it on wrong... (well, not without REALLY trying! ) It should have earth, +ve for side lights, +ve for dip beam, and +ve for mainbeam. How have you done the wiring for this car? Have you used the standard fuesbox, or have you done your own thing? I've kind of assumed that you've done a bit of both.... Have you got the original dash loom still? That'll have all of the connections you need... If you do have it, I'll dig out the wiring colours this evening and post 'em up tomorrow for you... 8) *edit* bugger, Jay beat me to the old loom suggestion due to our winging news team actually making me have to do some work!  -
nope... sorry...
-
if you want to bodge it, then, yeah, I suppose that'd work... For a better, longer lasting fix, 3 stainless screws and 3 threaded tabs will do it nicely... (used to use this method on H-YYU for a year before the respray when it was fixed properly... ;) )
-
matching the throttle to the ECU... ie setting it up.... ;)
-
yup, bleach won't affect paint...
-
sounds more like the gear linkage needs setting up properly to me... Gear oil change will help with it though... always does!

you need a glass roof from an 92-95 passat. - it's the first model after the one that didn't have a front grille. The Estate one is supposed to be slightly flatter and therefore a better fit, but the standard saloon one is a good fit anyway... If you remove the interior light and then the housing for it, you'll be able to see the sunroof motor. There's either a space for a flat head screwdriver (early motor) or a hole for an allen key with a cover over it, which you can use to open/close the motor without power... 8)

jazzdevil, sounds like one of the rocker arms on the mechanisim may have snapped off... tilt the roof and make sure that there's a silver rocker at the back of the mechanism on each side.... If not, you need a repair kit... :( BLACKG60, http://www.gpcvwaudi.co.uk sells 'em at about the cheapest price.... 8)

ah, OK, I miss-understood that part... Probable Dim/Dip problem then... ;) What have you done with the Dim/Dip resistor and associated relay/wiring? *edit* Ok, been to the car - on a G60 at least, the reverse light switch wiring colours are: Black with red stripe and black with blue stripe, both around 3mm wires... Hope that helps. -
Welcome... 8) Mechanically, the valvers are the least hassle, but as with any 10 year old + car, there's gonna be some gremlins which will be hanging about to bite you on the bum...

Headlamp problem -> check the passenger side bulbs carefully... and then check the earth is OK. Warning lamps -> best place to take a feed is from the relay for both hi-beam and indicators - that way you KNOW that if the LED is lit, so are the corresponding lights... Most indicator relays have a second terminal on 'em specifically for this use, and on the main beam relay, just take a feed from the main beam feed (fuse it obviously!). Reverse lights -> what did this car start life as? There should be a multiplug in the engine bay which connects to a 2 pole plug on the gear selection mechanism which is the reverse light switch. I'll check my car in a mo' to see what colour the wires are...
