Yes you need mk3 288mm highline discs (not 288mm mk4's as they have the wrong hub offset or something)- they were £47 each. Hoses were I think £74 and at the moment I have only fitted the front ones (you can't use your original hoses anyway as they have the wrong connection); pads were maybe £40 odd, and yes I changed the fluid to dot 5.1. They look great and the braking is night & day in comparison to a set of worn 280's; which of course are worth a fair bit in themselves so you can recoup some of your outlay in flogging those off :-)

I have just done the 288's on mine- plus coloured them red which sets off really nicely against the mystic blue and fills the Solitudes out well. Plus 288's don't go for as much as you think- I picked up a pair of a late mk4 1.8t for £50 and they were in good nick- once I had cleaned em up on a rotary wire brush and painted them up they looked like new. Coupled with new VAG discs, Goodridge hosed and Pagid FR's it makes for a whole new braking experience :-)

Braided hose fitting help! Urgent :-)

Hello, Just in the middle of my 288mm brake conversion- am a bit baffled by how to remove the old front brake hoses- I can see the join between the fixed pipe and the flexible hose- but they all seem locked into a bracket thats welded to the inner wheel arch- plus I'm not sure where the fixed pipe ends & the flexible hose part begins :-( Can anyone offer any help please- what do I unscrew from what? do I need to remove any clips or anything first? I really don't want to cock it up and give myself a much bigger job :? Cheers :) :) :)

'this file no longer exists' :(

Its really worth pulling all your pads out, cleaning up the pad 'runner' tracks and even filing back some of the pads backing plates to make sure they move freely. I use my Storm about as frequently as you- when I checked all my brakes every pad on every caliper was rusted into place- this caused hugely uneven braking when pushing hard- but yet suprisingly 'OK' braking when driving normally. Like you say- the sheer torque of the VR disguises the effect of mild seized brakes- whether its due to seized calipers or pads.

"That seems to be a "normal" VR6 with a Storm badge added onto it, they never came in that colour." Never came in which colour Dr F? This one? Oh bugger & all this time I've been insuring it as a Storm- coulda saved myself a few quid :(

Here's another!

PMSL :D

yeah the leather does seem to vary enormously between Storms (and VR's in general)- it must just depend on how much of a fat knacker has been driving it?

Whats the best way to blag stealer discounts?
Ice White Socks replied to Ice White Socks's topic in General Car Chat
Hee Hee- Finally got my 10% discount!! I told him how much we spent on parts in our house (three VW's) and that one was the C VR6 which costs porsche money and he doled out the 10% As you say Dinkus- you just have to find the enthusiastic staff member- this guys mate had just bought a VR as well so he understand how much I would be spending. For any of you Manchester/Cheshire guys its premier VW at Leek if you fancy chancing your luck :-) -
Need some help with a peugeot 206
Ice White Socks replied to Supercharged Junkie's topic in General Car Chat
mmm bloody french cars! I have one as a second car & the cooling fan/air-con stopped working. The front relays are mounted in a panel facing directly out into the bumper opening. Opened the panel (Just last night) and the wiring was beyond belief for a 4/5 year old car- big 40A wires just piles of green mush- five pin relays with only three intact pins left- ggggrrrrrrrr Dr M and S Junkie- I would check this out on yours before its too late. If you cleaned em all back up, popped the relays in bags and sealed up the front panel you would be avoiding a big headache! -
I think I've just killed ChrisVR6NOS!!

Oversteer in the wet - characteristic or damping?
Ice White Socks replied to G60 Bob's topic in Drivetrain
I span my VR the second week I got it- Combination of overinflated and cheap tyres. Its VERY lucky I managed to hit a piece of sloped kerb- I reckon it would have snapped something pretty expensive if it hit a standard kerb! Your right about lowering and the brake proportion valve- although I didn't brake at all coming into the corner when mine span :) If thats the *only* thing thats changed since you started noticing the problem-chances are thats it? Went for a drive in a 911 993 over the weekend....
Ice White Socks replied to Ice White Socks's topic in General Car Chat
Aye your right- I had gone OTT with 'neck-snapping'. Felt very much like the VR in terms of power delivery (tho it may have been better under 4K- I wouldn't know cos it was always over 4K!!) I think the tiptronics are a shade slower- but its a nice touch. Cheers -
Wow!! now I can see what all the fuss is about :) The car was a 270bhp 3.6 flat 6 (non-varioram) but with tiptronic. First impressions when getting in was a slight dissapointment- trim now where near the leathered VR and the switchgear seemed all over the place- but its pace was neck-snapping and the look of the car on the road with the great flared rear arches and fat rear tyres was awesome. Apparently does 170mph!! how fookin quick is that me wanty very much :(

Sounds lovely mate- Thats made my mind up about the BMC then :D

Congratulations Butterfly for Stanford Hall
Ice White Socks replied to DEL VR6's topic in General Car Chat
Well done Butterfly- I always thought your Storm was a cracking original example BTW- you got me thinking about the fuel tanks straps as well cos mine are minging- if you take them off to paint then will the tank drop to the floor?- if so are there any probs in reconnecting the filler neck or owt like that? Cheers -
I'll be on the 'ol serpentine belt tensioner bearing- wahoo!

A really daft question about brake calipers!
Ice White Socks replied to Jonny_L's topic in Drivetrain
you could try the plier trick? no Its funny cos thats exactly where my car is too- I did the rears OK but the bleed nipple wouldn't come off on one of the front calipers and ended up banging an undersize socket on to get enough grip to get it off- now I'm waiting for some new nips from the stealers grrrrrr :x -
A really daft question about brake calipers!
Ice White Socks replied to Jonny_L's topic in Drivetrain
The rear caliper is 'threaded' unlike the fronts. You need a caliper windback tool- about £15 from most motor factors. Or you could wind them back clockwise with a pair of long nose pliers. -
Sorry about the off-topic btw- some nice looking cars in there- all the best with it!

Hey you would never guess what cars he has got in the gallery (Trigger take note)... A Nissan Figaro!- How Random is that

Looks like a nice drop- just the right height IMO, I'm on Bilstein Sprintline's at about that same drop but the right is pretty unforgiving plus the backs seem to be sagging a little (I'm sure they are lower now than when I fitted) I'm looking to upgrade to coilies as I should get the same drop but a bit more comfort
