  1. yes there is a knack- take a small flat bladed screwdriver and put it behind the end of the end cap (ie so the flat of the screwdriver is pushing against the back of the flat end piece if that makes sense). Then hold the blade in one hand and push the end cap using the screwdriver in the other hand- it just flies off the end)
  2. mmm- be interested if you could get these from VAG- I did the mod and it was dead easy but I think my wiper insert was a cheapo one maybe. It had a hard plastic sleeve at the top which I had to remove which then left me with a blade that was a tad thinner in depth than the one which came off- it still fitted OK but didn't cure the judders :? Ooh thinking on- I'm in Durham on Friday- which motor factors was it James?
  3. Sorry trigs- must have missed it first time round- I see its now in its rightful place tho :)
  4. Found this when messing around on Googler- Corrado is Seriously uncool at the moment! http://www.coolwall.co.uk/ Can't see that lasting long mind
  5. Looks good James- You'll have a real flying machine there :) I'm Jealous
  6. If you wanna stick with the felt- you can get self-adhesive felt maybe 2mm thick- its perfect for this kinda thing. These cars actually were pretty well felted up from the factory- its just all worn through now. The big sqeak buster for me was to pull out the 'transmission tunnel' trim and felt every contactable area (strangely enough the biggest squeak/rub came from between the very back of the tunnel plastic and the plasticked carpet pleat at the base of the rear seats :? ) Let me know if you need some and I'll send u the details- it was VERY difficult to find though KevH says he got it from a dept store IIRC? Cheers
  7. wouldn't resale value be in issue here? I would have thought there would have been much more interest in an 'original' rebuilt 2.9VR, rather than an 24v transplant which might be a more risky option (even tho I 'know' which is the better engine). I have this dilemma on my VR and whether or not to supercharge- even tho a well sorted supercharged VR would be fookin rocket ship- it might put a lot of 'non-enthusiast' people of buying it.
  8. The 'proper' tool for the job is an impact driver. This is just a screwdriver that you place over the screw and hammer the back- the force of the hammer is converted into a twist whilst also pushing right into the screw. They are not expensive- well worth having in your toolbox tbh. Cheers
  9. mm well- first thing I did recently was to turn the MX right off (this is feature on the HU which brightens the sound no end). I think I'll turn my tweets right down (to -6db I think, they are on -3db at the mo)- this should make it actually spot-on- so need to change at all- wahey :D
  10. Yes my dealer had a few part numbers for the calipers as well for these- I thought they were all the same?
  11. I'll be doing this too- this might sound obvious but I have never heard anyone mention it here before- if you are colouring the calipers red when you make the change then get the MK4 anniversary ones as they come ready red! They might be a tenner or so more expensive- but a tin of hammerite and some non-ferrous primer will come to more than that :D
  12. Funny thing is - the local idiots had told the AA it was fixed by the roadside....
  13. Bloody Recovery Muppets! Whilst I have a lot of time for the AA guys- the local guys they call in are just idiots. Like I say the car sounded fine when being turned over- but the 'expert' said the cam belt had gone and he could tell thru the oil filler cap that the cams weren't turning with the engine (how he knew this god only knows as you can't see the cams because of the oil splash covers) Cam belt covers just come off and hey presto- its fine. Our kids calling them back up and getting a proper AA guy to check it out. Grrrrrrr
  14. yes thats makes sense- which is why it happened when it was being started (max stress on the teeth due to intertia of cams etc) Car will be back here soon so thats the first thing I'll look for Cheers
  15. Hi guys, Quickie on behalf of my brother who has an Ibiza 2.0 8v. Its been running rough for a while and wouldn't start this morning. AA have been round and says the timing belts snapped :? Now our kid was turning the engine over and it sounded fine- just wouldn't start! Am I right in thinking you really would **know** if you tried to turn an engine with no timing belt (I'm thinking all the noise of valve bendage etc) Thanks Mike
  16. Thanks for advice Kev- the thought of having to change the speakers fills me with depair! But if thats it what it takes then thats what it will have to be! Lotus SEAS hey 8) yummers
  17. Hi, I have the Focal component speakers fitted along with a whole load other Audioscape swag. I can't help feel they are too bright at high volumes- some of the high vocals are just ear piercing. Can this be corrected by using the equalisation? if so I could take it to Audioscape and get it set-up properly and ask them to level the tone a bit (I am guessing it must show up as being out of balance on their equipment). If not and it something I'm stuck with then I might look to get them changed :? Cheers
  18. Jay- I was looking for upgrading the brakes on my VR. Have the 288's for the front so need to get the mk3 288 mm discs, a set of rear mk4 anni calipers, Braided hosed and pagids front & back. Then I need them fitting to the car, full bleed with dot 5.1 etc. I know this is a pig of a job to get a good pedal after a full bleed so It would be nice to have an expert on the job (there is no brown nose smiley joker: ) I'm in Buxton which is just 'over the hill'- plus can you get stealer discounts? (maybe smith knight fay?) Cheers Mike
  19. Cheers for all the advice guys- a few years ago I wouldn't have given a shite about getting 10%- It must be cos I'm getting older and more sensible :( I'll let you know how I get on :?
  20. Hi, I see quite a few guys here get discounts from the stealers- I am looking to get a whole load of stuff soon and a 10% discount would be well worth having- trouble is the two I have asked so far have point-blanked refused? Anyone got any advice on the best way to blag the discount? Cheers Mike
  21. How to adjust the gear cables is the one thing question I have never seen fully answered on this forum- there is a special tool cos its in the Bentley Manual- but like you say they are as rare as rocking horse poop! Its been said a few times before but its also worth soaking all the linkages at the gearbox end in WD40- that can help the shift no-end Cheers
  22. OK - thats good enough for me 55 a side does sound cheap tho- I have emailed vagparts and see what they come back with as they are normally good on price! Cheers
  23. you see I said this all alloy thing to the fella as well- he said the pistons are still steel- maybe he isn't such a 'specialist' after all :?
  24. Just mentioned these calipers to some VW specialist fella today when It went in for the engine and gearbox oil change- he reckons the Mk4's go just as quickly as all the others and he has had to change loads already. Bit confused now cos maybe a set of used Mk4 calipers might not be such a good idea after all- might have to go new after all :( Says he can get new VAG rear calipers for £75 all in though so thats doesn't sound too bad
  25. Kev- Mcgard have got a great customer service dept- if you email them (mailto:[email protected]) and tell them your problem I am sure they will sort you a new set out. I emailed about the best way to pay for a new key which I knackered- and it was them who told me to send the old one in and they would replace 8) Cheers
