I bought a 2nd hand starter off the forum a few weeks back and when I have gone to fit it today it is completely different to my original and doesn't come close to fitting the stud pattern. It came off a vr so I thought it would be a straight swap. The only difference between the cars I know of is that mine is an early 93 vr and the car it came off was a late 93 vr, is there 2 different types? Rich

Has anyone got a photo of how the earth strap connects please.
-
I can't start the car! As I look at the starter I have two wires with ringed ends connected to a stud and nut on top of the starter and one wire with a black connector going into the end of the starter. Is one of these the earth?

What does the earth strap on a vr starter motor connect to? Mine seems to be going nowhere. If anyone has a pic of their starter in situ that would be great. Rich

Probably depends how abrassively they have been polished over the years which means thickness will vary from car to car. Mine is covered in chips and scratches which I have put down to the paint either being thin or soft in some way (no paint expert). I reckon I could lick mine off though!......The paint off my car that is :camp:

Great I will order one of those now. I assume any old bit of sponge can be used?

Started the VR for the first time in a while today and noticed fluid leaking underneath. After closer inspection it is fuel, it is coming from the fuel pipes around the middle of the car and it was wrapped in sponge which had perished and saturated. Does this mean replacing the whole line?

Just got hitched!! (the cars were awesome!)

Where did you hire them from? Me and my best man haven't got a car and I am very tempted with what you did! Oh and you are right about the a4067, I have driven it a few times, but never in a supercar! -

Thats wicked mate! Did you get married up in Brecon then? I am getting married next May but we are having a couple of old American cars. -
No speed bumps by you then? :gag:

That golf lives around the corner from me, it is well low on the front. Rich

Probably fuel for the F-150!

Do you have any idea what the fault is yet? Hard to say if it was ongoing without knowing what it is.
-
Yeah thats what I paid which I wasn't too concerned about. It seems everything is going up quite dramatically at the moment though, not PSF related but I also bought an ignition switch while I was there and although someone told me it would be around £12 it set me back £24!!

If the smoke is coming from the back of the engine I don't think it would be linked to the power steering. As far as I am aware the pump and all pipe work is located at the front of the engine (thats based on my VR). Could it be gasses leaking from the exhaust manifold/down pipe?

It has to be worth a try. It is getting beyond a joke.
-
I am starting to think I would rather keep doing my shoulder in bump starting it!!
-
Cool I will try that.

Checked the earth last weekend when I reconditioned my starter so done both those things :D When I did the starter it was near perfect inside, just a slight bit of carbon build up. I didn't touch the solenoid but when I do have the problem I don't get the usual click linked to a dodgy solenoid.
-
I did that with no joy. I just managed to bump start it now so gonna get it home and have a look for the relays.
-
Doesn't turn over, fuel pump primes and dash lights are on. I have a brand new igntion switch I have just plugged in and tried turning directly but nothing. Stupid question but where are the relays?
-
I'm stuck outside work in the vr and it refuses to start. This has been ongoing but this is the worst it has happened. I have checked for loose connections and found nothing. Only thing I can see is a really thin blue wire with a spade connector on the end, should this be attached?

I am having a few issues with the VR not starting very well and possibly running a bit rich. Is there anyone on the Cardiff area that has a copy of VAG.com that they would be willing to running on my car to see if it can diagnose the problem? Cheers Rich

It's 14. Thats brilliant, thanks both. Rich

Please can someone post up the part number for the bolt that goes into the front engine mount on a VR. Much appreciated Rich
