Get a cotton bud and smell the liquid - if its still there several hours later its not likely to be fuel? If the gasket is only breached between the coolant circuit and cylinder you wont get oil / coolant mixing. You've found something to investigate further that's probably causing the rough running on start up.

I had similar with an 8v golf, the head gasket was blown between water jacket and cylinder number 1, no fault when hot, when the engine cooled and the coolant was still pressurised the coolant would leak into the cylinder and sit there until the next cold start. remove the plugs and using a torch look at the top of the pistons, if one is much cleaner than the other 3 suspect the head gasket - the coolant steam cleans the piston crown.

On the 3rd try it runs smoothly?

Solder looks dry on tr1? But it is a bit blurry. usually it’s on a sticker inside the case? It does look like they’ve been resoldered before?

Not to mention wheel size to keep the gearing correct

That image is upside down, the sides curl up towards the chassis legs, the forked bit at the top slides into the spoiler on the MK3 TDi. Some of my posts aren't appearing - very odd!

Its a good 10 years since I had a MK3 tdi estate, the sides fit to the chassis legs I think, the front would have to be either a trim or a patch job depending on length. The sump hole would need widening too (this would dictate position?).

Is that what holds the pump inside the swirl pot?

The tensioner bolt looks like it needs to push against something to pivot and apply tension? Is everything assembled properly?

Where's the pump driven off? From memory its a different vee belt than the multi vee that runs everything else (I can only see multi vee pulleys)? Edit. Pic I've found online shows a second pulley fitted to the crank for the PAS pump?

If you open up the fob is there a sticker inside stating the frequency it works off (###MHZ)? I'm sure at one time you could have clones made?

Auctions are littered with dodgy dealers often bidding on each others stuff to make the reserve (the reserve being what the seller "thinks" its worth). I know historically we talk down the prices, but would that car make £6K advertised here?
