Could be an air leak? Check all vacuum piping around the engine bay going too / from the manifold etc for splits etc allowing air to enter the engine when the throttle is closed

Yes, the pads should just pull out with your fingers, the fact that the handbrake lever will move suggests the piston is not seized. Don’t press the pedal with the Caliper off the pads Also check the Caliper slides move in and out freely

Check the pads aren't jammed in the carriers, not cleaned up by the fitter before installing new pads.

Its important to install them correctly, once refitted hold the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and rock it side to side, if there's no play its too tight and any grease will be squeegeed away and the bearings will score the races leading to premature failure.

Is the Touareg an in-line engine? Auto too? Is the engine ecu also used for the tranny? Mk4 gearbox will have the engine revving it’s nuts off because for the smaller rolling circumference of the Corrado tyres in comparison to the Jetta. If the above is correct you’re doing it the hard way

Non of my business, but you'll find a good condition rear seat much easily than covers with good bolsters, it maybe you just have to bide your time until one comes up for sale near to you. I buy loads of stuff I may want to use in the future if the price is right, both my other half and my new neighbour call me a hoarder, but both take it for granted I'll have the item they need to use or loan.....

Don't let ultimate economy rule over ultimate running costs. EG modern VAG diesels have fragile EGR valves, DPFs can be an issue on low mileage as well as high mileage cars, then there's DMFs and clutches, turbos etc - any will give you a bill of around £800 with very poor access around the engine bay hampering DIYing. All the above makes you current car look promising even with the £1000 of repairs needed for another 12 months motoring? For me I'd be looking for a 1.9 TDi pre DPF diesel as everything is cheap and simple to repair
