Useless without pics...! Engine is exactly the same as the 1.8 16v in the Corrado, so almost any advice for that applies to the Golf as well. Likely the thermostat, but there are three temp senders on the side of the head, all have the same rating - try swapping the wires over to see if it could be a dodgy sender. Try adjusting the clutch cable before writing off the clutch as well - may be a cheap fix. MPG could be a number of factors - 25 town/35 motorway is normal-ish territory for a valver but if you're getting lower than that you may need to check the timing and CO before anything else.

Dear Coraline (the Corrado), I O U: -1 x blue expansion tank cap -1x Blaupunkt headunit -1x OEM toolkit Always a bad sign when you start 'borrowing' bits from SORN'd cars...

Personally I love Le Castellets, think they're a very nice wheel, and not as common as people think. Been thinking about getting a set for a while now - would definitely be easier to clean than my BBS RAs Schwartz Blau is a little rarer than Royal Blue, but still a fair few of them knocking about. Schwartz Blau has an almost black look to it (hence the name...), whereas Royal Blue has more of a green tinge. Rainbow interiors aren't that rare (all big bumper 16v had it as standard, as well as campaign and run out 8v), but definitely desirable. Just be careful getting in and out so as not to squash your driver's bolster and you'll be fine. Completely agree about the dated feel of the MK2 - the driving position is high, the screen seems almost vertical (!) and the interior is very basic compared to almost everything else. BUT they're chuckable, fun to drive, relatively reliable, easy to maintain and cheap to run, and seem to come alive on twisty B-roads.

Don't really have many problems in the Corrado, just the odd numpty who would drive with the same aggression with any driver and any car. I get a lot more willy-waving chancers when I'm in the MK2, who seem to think it's a badge of achievement to overtake a 20 year old car with 215000 miles on the clock. They all look pretty stupid though when I don't even acknowledge them and then roll up behind them at the next set of lights.

B4 Passat or MK4 Golf climatronic can be made to fit. Have a look at tonedef's, coolrado's and my build threads for more info. Jay (24vRenshaw) has also done it I believe, and a couple of others.

My gf had a Rover 25 and even though she hated it, I thought it was a pretty decent car. 1.4 petrol engine was quite pokey and rev-happy as most k-series engines are, and handling was okay if not mind-blowing. It memorably over-heated though when we were driving south to buy and pick-up the Corrado, which I guess is to be expected from petrol models.

Questions - Thing I just don't understand about VW's decisions
tony_ack replied to Portent's topic in General Car Chat
One I thought of today... wonder why VW put the 9a engine in the facelift 16v instead of the ABF? Both other facelift models (VR6 and 8v) used fully electronic injection, wonder why VW didn't do the same for the 16v? -
Looked on Vagcat, it's a passenger heated mirror glass for a B2 passat or MK2 Scirocco

hmmm... depends. I've got a MK2 and a Corrado at the moment. I think the Corrado is a better car all day long in terms of speed, handling, ride, comfort, looks and exclusivity but it's also more expensive to keep on the road, and it's got to the point where I want to keep it as a special treat. The MK2 is my daily.. rugged, reliable (ish!), still turns heads, fun to drive, cheap to run and insure and cheap to fix, but best of all because it was cheap I'm not too worried about it getting damaged. Your situation is a bit different - the MK2 is higher (actually quite a high driving position compared to many cars) so easier to get in and out of.. you'll probably get the chance to enjoy it more. If they're both going to be weekend cars, then you need to decide which weekend car you'd rather have long term after your back is better.

Responsibility lies with the seller for me... you've got to package these things correctly and assume that the courier is going to play football with the boxes.

The tax ran out on this last week, and I can't afford another 6 months right now, so I've had to SORN this. Problem is that the MOT expires in a couple of weeks too, so it may end up being quite costly to get it back on the road again. I used her daily for the 2 weeks prior to the tax running out, and loved every minute... it was a sad day when she had to go back into the garage. She starting to need a bit of bodywork attention too now, as can be seen in the pic. A couple of farewell shots... Hope to get it back on the road when finances pick up... Meanwhile, I'm rolling in the MK2 Golf - it's starting to come together a bit now, and not doing bad really for 215000 miles (still 10000 less than the Corrado tho!)

Autocar & Motor - Road test of Corrado 31-05-1989

Not sure how the VR compares, but I found the Corrado VR6 ride on standard suspension to be very smooth compared with the MK2. -
Questions - Thing I just don't understand about VW's decisions
tony_ack replied to Portent's topic in General Car Chat
It's only guesswork from me... 1. The Corrado was based on the MK2 Golf which was 4 stud. Not too sure why the VR6 got a wider track (needed more room?), but the wide track design was probably borrowed off a MK3 GTI/VR6, which was 5-stud. No point reinventing the wheel (no pun intended) 2. I can only guess that because the 16v motor was still relatively new (released in 1986/7 in the Golf) when the G60 was designed, VW decided to fall back on a tried and tested design (1.8 8v). Once the 8v G60 was launched, there probably wasn't really much point in developing a production version of the 16v G60 when the VR6 was on the drawing boards, and Audi were starting to look at the 1.8T -
Yep, someone attempted to steal mine from the previous owner but was thwarted by the factory immobiliser. Come to think about it, I've been thwarted by it a few times too. A CCTV camera is useful to find the culprit but doesn't always stop them having a go in the first place. If your street is like most around Ecclesall Rd though parking in the same spot every night to be covered by the camera may be a problem (I've had neighbours actually deliberately park in front of my house because they know it has CCTV coverage). Your best bet is to sleep in the front bedroom with the window open at night, but sounds like you already do that, and it doesn't help you sleep easy. I've had loads of trouble with vandalism where I live (though a lot better over the last couple of years), and also had trouble when I lived up your end of Sheffield. I learnt to deal with it by just accepting it's a fact of life these days. If you suspect someone is deliberately targeting your car, then do all you can to catch them, but if you're afraid that there may be some random person out there who may want to steal a car and may choose yours, then you're going to worry yourself to death.

My First Corrado - Bye Bye Mk2 Golfs! Hello VR6!

Pretty sure this car used to be owned by a guy in/near Rotherham? Used to see it regularly on the way to work about a year or two ago. -
The Monkey's Daily - Mk2 Golf GTi 8v [straight through MOT]

This... ...is all your fault! Knew I wouldn't be able to resist another 8v. -

M511 EGT, Classic Green VR6. Bought off a member on here based in Milton Keynes (Jon - Novastrike), who in turn bought it off a forum member, who did a lot of miles in the year or so he owned her, and also did the chains, clutch and flywheel, spending about £1700. She was also run at Santa Pod in 2008. Well looked after before that, with a full dealer service history. Started life in a Wimbledon dealership - the first owner was the dealership itself (demo car?) -
No worries, I would go new to be honest. Postage would be getting on for about £20 anyway due to weight, so £30 altogether.
-
Here it is, pretty rusty as I said! Can't really ask much for it - tenner plus postage? I'll have to check the weight first before I can get a price on the postage.
-
Got it out of the shed. Doesn't look like it's leaked (protector cap is dry), but the strut is pretty rusty where the paint has peeled away. No idea on the mileage as I got it second hand, but I would guess it's a fair bit given its condition.
-
I have 2 adj Koni fronts for a VR6 in the shed - one had leaked quite badly and when I fitted them the car was undriveable and kept trying to find the kerb it was so bad. The other side I remember seemed firm and wasn't leaking from what I recall, but I'll have to have a look. I ended up replacing the pair with new ones

Liquid shoe polish is a good option, try and get one with a sponge applicator built into the bottle. It does last for a while but will go off eventually. The only thing I'd say is that maybe it's a little *too* black at first. I have been using boiled linseed oil recently, but I've found it tends to work better on the rougher textured plastics (same goes for liquid shoe polish to be honest)

The car sounds repairable without any major work, so I think the decision depends on what the car means to you. If the car is your reliable daily and you don't really want to do much work to it other than the repair, then I would say keep and repair. On the other hand, if you see yourself spending lots of money on the car in the next few years - either modifying it or getting it perfect - then break it and get another, as you'll always have a nagging feeling that spending money on a Cat C is pouring money into a black hole (quite similar to most Corrados actually!). Bear in mind that 8vs aren't all that common any more. For liability, your accident was very similar to mine (replace Ali the taxi driver, with a pizza delivery driver who was in a hire car because he crashed his car earlier that week) and the other party was ruled to have full liability, despite a couple of mystery 'witnesses' that the 3rd patry found really late on. There were a couple of things in my favour though - first he was turning right out of a junction where there was no right turn, and second my passenger (and witness) happened to be an accident claims lawyer. It still put my insurance up quite a bit to the point where insuring a modified VR as a daily was prohibitive, but I'm now getting £400 a year quotes on the MK2 for 10000 miles a year, 2 years after the accident.

Just noticed this thread, and it is spookily similar to mine - Schrick in, water leak, new rad needed, 288 brakes... Planning on a Climatronic conversion next? ;-) Remap helps with the Schrick by the way, especially with pinking at 3k rpm under full load. I also got some 268 Schrick cams in mine, gave it to Stealth for the remap, and now it pulls nicely all the way to the line.
