Golf mk4 V6 4motion... with winter tyres.
-
You're all nuts!
-
I live in Bracknell and only 4 miles from the Surrey border by Bagshot. I enjoy my days out at DG. Nice 100 mile+ blast up the M40 and last time I spent a day on the Severn Valley Railway - it must be the only place in the UK you can ride on a steam train and see elephants, giraffes and rhinos along your journey as you pass the West Midlands Wildlife Park. I wouldn't go anywhere else for major work on my 'rado but there is The Phirm on the Hampshire/Surrey border along the A30 if you wanted to go somewhere nearer. On their website they quote about VR chain replacement. Thanks. How long would chains, clutch take? Just a day? I assumed I'd have to leave it there for a few days.
-
Thanks. Sorry for not searching :) So, if an engine has had a previous bottom end rebuild and then has the chains, clutch, and "thermostat, thermostat housing, washers etc etc" then it should be pretty sorted for a while? Anything else major that a high mileage engine would need? EDIT: And is there anywhere closer to Surrey that could be recommended for such work (if I need it one day)?

Everyone seems to be concerned about getting their chains done. But what is a ballpark figure for doing it (assuming taking to a garage).

Used Values - has the bubble finally burst?

I seem to have the opposite problem to sellers... I can't seem to buy a car :? Admittedly I've dithered over a few and lost out which was my own fault (lesson now learned) but I've also been messed around by some of the sellers too. I'm thinking of just giving it a break for a bit and then looking next year. I've seen a fair few rough cars and also some very good ones (should have bought one of those in hindsight!) and the price difference between them isn't great. I think we will gradually see the better stuff rising a little in price and the poorer stuff dropping away and being broken. -
Parcel shelf straps!!!!! \o/

This is pretty much how I feel about it. I recently test drove a mk5 R32 and while there is no doubt it is a lovely car, it wasn't lovely enough for the increase in price over my 4mo. So I decided to stick to the plan of keeping the 4mo and getting a Corrado too... for overall less money.

Why didn't you take it straight back and tell him to clean it up?

lol... and congrats, good luck, etc!!! -
Be careful of the door not opening one day. My garage has an electric door but also a side door with a normal mortis lock. The electric motor failed a day after the mortis lock on the side door jammed. I had no way of getting into the garage to get the car out... even worse, just a few days earlier my fridge had broken down and I was storing all my milk, etc, in the garage as it was mid winter. So I had both my car and the contents of my fridge inside a garage that I had no way of getting into. Luckily I managed to persuade the mortis lock to open and could get in that way. But on a garage with no other entrance you'd probably have to smash the main door down to get into it if the motor ever fails. Also... slightly belatedly (as it was yesterday)... I went to see what may turn out to be my car soon (depending on getting a few issues sorted). Didn't manage to test drive it because it sprung an oil leak and we were both a bit too cautious to risk it  A bit of a pity really as it was a 400 mile round trip :brickwall: Still, the leak turned out to be something minor and should be fixed tomorrow. I think I'm a bit of a jinx on test drives. So far, while viewing cars, the following have failed (each on different cars): * Electric mirrors * Rear spoiler * Leak from the oil pressure switch

Spot on answers, thanks guys.
-
Thanks. I really didn't know you could get those. Although I'd only need the mat for a single seat, not a whole kit.
-
I suspect it['s somewhere in the heated seat mat. Assuming it is, and assuming I can't fix it by taking it apart and soldering it, are these still available through VAG or are they deleted?
-
Just a quick question. I'm considering a car which has a small amount of rust on the inner edges of three arches. It isn't yet bad but obviously needs to be fixed, most likely at a body shop. If the car is otherwise a good, sound, vehicle, should this put me off?

Charged VR6 in a mk2

Are the "behind the dash" parts a dash-out job or can they be got at without removing it? If thats as bad as it gets then why pass on a car that is otherwise A1??,these cars are 15+ years old now, s/hand parts are cheap and plentiful.... Yes, very true. Although I have a viewing of another car in a few days which may be just as good but with all elements working.
-
What's a 'Speed'?
-
Thanks, appreciated. Knowing my luck in life its bound to be something behind the dash :)
-
Thanks for the input so far. I will trawl the search when I get home. It was a lovely car apart from this and its a pity for it to take the shine off an otherwise good car. If it were cheaper then I wouldn't worry but as its the top of my budget, plus a bit, i need to know the possible causes. Unfortunately I didn't think to ask those questions about it slowing etc. Thanks again, will hit the search later...

Test drove a car with standard cloth today and I was very pleasantly surprised at how nice it was.
-
Thanks. Yes the rest of the car was very good and I liked it. However it is slightly above my budget and if its an expensive fix then it pushes it just too far out of reach. What are the possibles... motor obviously. But do they have control units that could have failed as I guess that would be expensive?
-
Apologies if this is not the right sub forum or if the information is available with a search... typing this on a phone... and need to make a decision tonight on a car. The spoiler has stopped working just prior to my viewing and I would like to understand the different causes and how difficult and expensive the fix might be. The symptoms are no spoiler movement at all on either automatic or the manual override switch. Fuses 16 and 21 appear to be fine and all other electric are working. There is no noise or vibration from the spoiler. Any thoughts?
