  1. I had a mk2 Golf GTI 16v back in the late 90's. I really loved that car and it was my first reasonably nice and quick car. So the comparison I now have is quite distant and the car would have been almost new back then. But I prefer the Corrado. The VR6 has a nicer engine. It has a nicer cabin. It's still old enough for "retro cool" but not so old that it feels agricultural like an older Golf. It sits lower and has a more sporty feel. However most people don't know what a Corrado is and parts are harder to get. In my opinion a Corrado is the better car, slightly more modern, nicer to live with, more unusual. But most people would prefer the Golf because of the Golf scene and heritage. EDIT: The Corrado community is really one of the strong points about owning this car as well; both this forum and also the Corrado Club (join both - it's worth it). It's a small but very friendly and helpful community.
  2. I've just checked my filter (bought from VAG a few weeks ago, still in box). It has the large oring but not a small one with it.
  3. Welcome to the forum. These are old cars now and all will need maintenance to some degree. So I don't think there will be much of a cost difference between owning any of the models. Insurance may be a little more on the G60 and VR6 if you are young but there isn't a huge difference in other running costs really. 8v / 16v = Good as a daily. VR6 = Best all rounder in my opinion. Makes the best noise. Also a competent daily. G60 = Arguably not as fast as the VR6 in standard form. Can be modified more easily. But the charger will need occasional maintenance. Makes a lovely noise too but different to the VR6. Probably the least suited to being a daily simply because of the extra maintenance of the charger. But if kept to maintenance schedules I wouldn't be worried about reliability. If I was getting another weekend dar it would probably be the G60 because the GLader charger is fairly unique. They are now rarer than the VR6. But if it were a daily then I'd get a VR6 or 8v/16v. Obviously just my opinion of course. Buy the best you can afford. As mentioned above it's a friendly forum and there may be someone near the car you want to view who would have a few hours to give an opinion. I bought one 4 years ago simply to scratch an itch and I have to say there is definitely something of character about them. I've owned it far longer than i expected to. As for working on them I'm stil only at the stage of doing less complex work. but like any older car they are like a set of mechano or lego; fairly simple in design and build.
  4. Normally a genuine one from my local VW dealers. The conversation always, always, goes something like this: Me: "I'd like to order an oil filter and new filter bolt please." VW: "No need to order. We should have it in stock." Me: "Well that would be great but I think it's unlikely." VW: "We always carry a lot of service items Sir. I'm sure we'll have it. Which car is it?" Me: "A Corrado VR6." VW: "Oh. I'm afraid we don't seem to have that in stock. Would you like me to order one for you?"
  5. I'd say either red, shiny black or matt silver, with a preference for silver. Keep it classic imho. But if you do want it showing throuhg then red.
  6. I've had a look in the Bentley manual and it simply refers to it as the tray. It also seems to be one piece (ie the undertray and the missing back part seem to be one piece). I can't get to the car right now to check but I wonder if it's been cut out rather than simply a piece missing? If so then you'll need the complete passenger tray which should have the back on it.
  7. It's the same across all cars (apart from those with aircon) so I'd suggest asking in the cars breaking section.
  8. Good Lord he's at it again! Great work :)
  9. If that's where I think it is (passenger side shelf) then there should be a plastic back to it. If I recall they are different depths depending on whetehr the car has aircon or not. So maybe it was removed when converting to aircon or removing it?
  10. Is a jacking beam worth using? http://www.sgs-engineering.com/garage-equipment/trolley-jacks/tjb2-jacking-beam
  11. Perfect timing for this thread. I am looking for a new jack too. My current one just doesn't lift the car quite high enough. I also stumbled on the SGS 3 ton low profile jack and was about to get it. So good to know others have found them OK.
  12. My Storm grey VR6 has a black badge too :) I have some good speakers (forget which) in my Audioscape door pods. They are running off the head unit and I think they would benefit from a separate amp instead. The sub in the boot (left by the previous owner - not really the sort fo thing I would add myself) is good though.
  13. The registration lamp is either a bulb (obviously) or sometimes the wiring gets disconnected from the back of the bulb holder and needs soldering. It's worth checking that too. Emissions - A new lamba is about £45 on ebay. I think they can be tested using a volt meter although I'm not sure how (a google should show something up). If it turns out to be the cat then I have a spare used one (can't be sure it works as never tested it). I'd need it back at some point because I bought it for a reason. But you're welcome to borrow it to get it through the test if it's not the lambda. I'm no mechanic but my family are in Norfolk. So if you needed a bit of morale support one weekend I could bring a few beers up, a jack, a pair of axle stands, some tools, a Bentley manual and combine it with seeing them (trust me I barely know anything mechanical and am probably more dangerous than of any use, but sometimes just having someone else there can boost morale).
  14. I've used David Clulow a few times and recently they gove the hard sell after the test. I'm sure the test is fine but I will avoid them in future simply because their hard sell annoys me. I've also had difficulty getting them to hand my prescription to me afterwards and had to really insist (I assume they thing I will simply buy online).
  15. Good spot about the leather. It probably isn't heated, hence the price. Yes the VR6 is probably the worst handling around something small like a go kart track. The G60 and valvers would handle better there.
  16. "The mighty Corrado VR6" :D
  17. I caught a few parts of it when they just repeated it on sky go. I didn't see the whole episode but what I did see was great for the car. They seemed to like it and the go kart scene and selling it over the asking price (whether that's genuine it not) is fantastic PR for the Corrado. It makes me want to get a few more things done on mine now :)
  18. Arse. Missed it. Wont bother watching the last few mins as it will spoil it for when I one day see it.
  19. Mine is similar. I replaced the thermostat this year which improved it a lot (it used to barely register on a run before I replaced it). I think this is relatively normal behaviour.

    JMC's G60

Good :) I know what you mean. I've probably driven less than 500 miles in mine this year. But it's just so much fun when I do use it and it costs so little to keep.
  21. Welcome. The best colour :D
