I'm having an issue with battery drain on my VR (OBD2). The car starts a little sluggish sometimes but when running everything seems fine. Battery voltages are: 14.10v when idling. 13.2v (approx) with every electrical item on, although the idle fluctuates trying to keep up with the load (pre OBD2 the idle just bogged down). 12.2v (approx) when charged and removed from the car. 11.95v (+/- 0.05) with the car switched off and once the fan/aux pump after run has completed (it does actually drop lower than this, but it creeps up again once the after run has finished). it drops as low as 9v when cranking. The alternator is 120a and the wiring and alternator are good I've tested volts at various points around the wiring; lives and earths with pretty much about 0.05v drop max though out the car. As far as I can tell there is no battery drain when the car is not being used - other than the alarm which does state in the handbook that it wont adversely affect the battery for about two weeks. Although the Aux pump and fan after-run really saps power at about 0.01v/0.02 per second whilst they are running. If I leave the ignition on, without the engine running, a door open so the interior light works, stereo on etc.. Pretty much if I use the battery without the car running the battery looses power very quickly and the car won't start - I either have to bump it or trickle charge it from the main for about 10 minutes. Even with the interior light on the battery looses 0.01v per second - Surely that's something you could keep on for days from a 12v battery without major adverse affects? Have I just got a dying battery or is there an issue with the car pulling too much power?

Right.. Just double checked the wiring diagrams and as it stands the first page is incorrect.. For my car anyway (late 1993 VR6 - Essentially 94 model spec) On my car and VW wiring diagrams for the 3 speed fan. The Red wire on the radiator sensor is permanent live. Red/White is stage one. and Red/Black is Stage two. If I bridge the wires Red with Red/White I get stage 1. If I bridge Red with Red/Black I get stage 2. I traced the connections from each source for the stage two and tested the wire continuity and everything seems fine. I then waited for my car to get up to temp and tested the outputs from the fan control module to see which fans were kicking in. I get stage 1 and stage 2 kicking in. All is good. :)

Apologies, I'll clarify. I have the later type rad switch. If I bridge the common wire (red/white) with the red wire I get stage 1. If I bridge the common wire with the red/black wire I get nothing. According to the guide I should get stage 2. If I bridge the connection from the black temp sensor I get stage 3.

I've just been playing around with my fans just to make sure everything is working ok after my OBD2 conversion due to the fact my heatermatrix popped within a few weeks of it being back on the road and I wanted to make sure the cooling system is spot on. I've followed the guide as of page one to test everything and I bridged the connections on the radiator switch; stage 1 and 3 are good. Stage two, nadda, nothing. Bridging the yellow temp sensor activates the Aux pump and the fan. The aux pump works on ignition, when running and on after-run for approx 10 minutes. The fans also work on the afterrun. The stage one kicks in around 90-95°C (according to the clocks and vagcom (blue temp)). The car never really goes above 100°C at all. So I don't know if stage two ever kicks in.. I just don;t want to be in a position where I need stage two and it isn't there.. Oh.. I also tried a different blue temp, yellow temp and fan control module with no different effect. Where do I go from here?

Last few sets went for around the £600 - with door cards. I see more of these "very very rare" cloth Recaros than anything else. :) I'd love some. But not at that price!

New VW Corrado; based on the new Audi Quattro. With the new VR6 Turbo. It just makes sense.

Yup, killer! I checked the matrix and it was mint. No issues. I'm wondering whether I've knocked it when I removed it or something? Either way, it has to be fixed. I'm an expert with the whole dash out now; I can get the dash off in less than an hour! :) Corrado's. You gotta love 'em.

Thats what I thought at first! I was upset, then happy at what my £6k insurance cheque would buy me!

100% the matrix. Both carpets are wet. Good job I caught it in time otherwise it could have been much worse. Balls. I need the car and I won't be able to get hold of a Matrix until the weekend. I know I can bypass the matrix, but do I have to join the pipes to the matrix together or can I just bung them individually?

I dare not check, the Mrs could have ****ed herself :awesome: But yeah, Matrix was my first guess. Dashboard was only off a few weeks ago too; matrix looked spot on. :bonk:

I'm 99% sure I know the answer here but I just want some confirmation before I go out and buy one and strip the dash down. On my way home from work, when the car was up to temp and boiling hot (100 degrees coolant temp) I noticed, when stationary in traffic that some really light smoke / steam was coming out of the middle vents, as soon as I moved again the smoke stopped. I'm sure it smelt sweet; but my hay-fever nose doesn't help in that department. When I got home I checked for leaks and noticed the coolant level had dropped ever so slightly. When I turned the car off I noticed that the windscreen steamed up, only a small section on the passenger side just above where the fan blower is. Thoughts?

Vehicle Wiring Products Ltd - 0115 930 5454 They deliver internationally. Crappy website but I ordered £50 of products and they arrived promptly. http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/home/homepage.php I picked up loads of OE style spade connectors for when I re-vamped my headlight loom. I bought the OE, unique connectors with the tab which fit in the original headlight plugs so I'm sure you'll find what you need. It will be a case of unplugging what you need on your original loom, removing the original spade from the plug casing then measure the connector size and match it up on the website. Generally speaking you'll re-use your original plug casing.

How old are you? It's all down to postcodes. I remember when I went to Uni; my insurers wanted an extra £1000 to move from Sheffield to Leeds. Robbing bar stewards.

Just man up and pull!

Stanley blade, sharp blade screwdriver and patience. Oh.. And lots of swearing. Don't be temped to use your other hand for extra pressure on the outside of the arch. You may slip and stab yourself in your wrist like I did. 3 days in hostpital for that one. My wrist splurted blood like in comical horror films. :)

Me too.

I have a working one, it's my working spare. No idea what they go for so make me an offer Rich

My sound is from the exact same area. Almost like it's coming from the PCV valve hole on the rocker? That area in the engine is the breather and there is a huge gap in the head for the bottom end to breathe. I believe it's just where the engine sound resonates to. A later plastic cam cover makes a huge noise difference as the earlier metal style just resonates it even further. Mine has quietened down a tad more with the OBD2 conversion. Whether it's ISV related or that damper pot or even that there is less pipework? 10w60 oil works a treat for the sound too. Have you tried the good old ATF trick? it works wonders on cleaning engines. Trust me. If you do have a sticky lifter; that will solve it. I can provide pictures of how clean my internals are.
-
Mine makes a very similar sound, as does my mates. Think it's just a characteristic of the VR. I've put in some 10w60 fully synthetic which has quietened it down a bit.

Where can you buy this greystripe?
-
For a VW buddy. He's after a G60 front engine mount bracket. What you got?
-
My arch liners were removed before I bought the car and the previous owner just sprayed my inner arches with waxoil type stuff. Does the trick. I have found that I get lots of build up of dirt in the very front/outside corners of the car. When I wash it loads of dirt comes out under the outside underneath of the headlights/front slam strip. Just keep your eyes on it.

considering trading the corrado in for a golf vr6

I like Golf VR's :bonk:
