Project Plum - The Plan of Attack

Recommended Posts

its coming together well :salute:

What did you decide to do regarding the rear beam mounting bracket alignment ?

Thanks steve

We realised that the underseal actually squares off really neatly at opposite corners of the mount, so along with my initial markings of the old mount it wasn't very had to align the new one up. I'll tell the garage to check it out when they MOT it though, definitely.

good work!

excellent pictures. got a feeling im gonna need to this to the passat in the next year or two, dreading it, everything on the pissrate is that bit bigger and heavier to make it seem so much more effort lol

not to mention they have 4 bushes to wrestle in place not the 2 that you guys get!

think the passat has a separate bush in each side of the beam mounting, so two each side, I guess the whole thing is a bit beefier than the Corrado.

nah the passat beam looks like a golf beam on steriods, the bushes are bigger diamter and theres 2 each side (pressed in from opposite side of the axle)

not sure where the "corrado uses a passat rear beam" myth came from, cos it doesnt . .

although ive just checked the rear track figures for the passat and corrado and theyre the same, but neuspeed etc list different part numbers for the rear anti roll bars for each car.

maybe the only difference is the brackets due to the fatter axle?

Yeah, could well be the brackets I guess! Think I read about the C using that beam on here, so could well have been _38287609_hearsay8.jpg

@corsameal:

Found this picture of my old beam and hard lines - looks like it goes straight to me, but this could well be a replaced line

Got the rear suspension on plus all the brake lines tightened this avo with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Prodigal  :salute:

Ahhh, at last...

image019cko.jpg

New teacake hats for the top mounts, and a rear bench made from carbon fibre

image020p.jpg

The sunny side. Used the jack to raise the beam up whilst aligning top mounts on the dampers.

image021qdn.jpg

Got a few mud avalanches off the petrol tank, but it wasn't so bad with my safety glasses on :dorky:

image022u.jpg

Now I have the advantage 8) :cuckoo:

This afternoon I will be mainly rooting out the new:

stone shields,

stub axles,

bolts for stub axles,

wheel bearings,

disc brakes,

calipers,

carriers,

guide pins and bumf.

hopefully put those on tomorrow all being well. Ahhh, easter hols :norty:

Mate - just watch that brake line isn't going to get crimped by the chassis - it might not be but it looks routed wrong from here...

It was like that on my TDI, luckily Vince at Stealth spotted it as I took it up there a few days after getting the car - could have been nasty!

hey pal, hope all is well - what supercharged says about the rear line - make sure it's all sorted clearance wise.

also - if you tightened up the join between the flexi hose that goes to the rear caliper and the solid line, you'll have to undo it again! - you need to tighted the flexi line into the caliper first, then bent it over into place and tighter it up onto the solid line...

nice to see it's all coming together finally though :D

Yeah, I was thinking about that when 3CM posted up his wiggly hard lines

I'm trying to work out whether the suspension will bottom out before the beam hits the chassis at the mo.

Thanks fla, replacing parts is the price I paid for wanting a cheap C with goodish bodywork.

I still have to sort the PAS at the front end, buy some samcos (and do the cross-members whilst the radiator is out) and the G60 braks. Plus try and work out if the low comp issue is a blown HG from killed water pump or the rings. If the block has gone, I'll try to limp it through MOT emissions and then build up my spare item over the next few months/year or so.

Man, reading back over just the first 10 pages of this thread fill me with emotions, good and bad! The car has come a long way. I think we're into £2000ish territory now.

2k spent? fair play pal, that's not really all that bad considering....

if it makes you feel any better - you've got some catching up to do with me yet!

2k with purchase yeah. I wouldn't like to guess at what some people on here have spent! I think Stoney wins most £££ for paint though!

It's nice to see it coming together, I totally agree it's definitely better to have to bolt on new bits than weld on new panels. Always enjoy seeing your progress with attention to detail, it's almost slower than mine though :D :D

Cheers mate, yeah can be a bit slow going at the mo! I'm halfway through a design project on SW but it's soooo sunny outside and I'm tempted to get the discs and bearings on the stub axles...

£2k is impressive, I'm not doing to badly myself but then I've probably replaced 1/5th of what you have, mainly because it's all been done by a garage.

The car cost £700 and so far it's had:

4 x Tyres

Real Wheel Bearings

Tie Rod Ends

1 Ball Joint

Expansion Tank

Distributor

Injectors

Vacuum Valve

Hoses (most of the coolant hoses)

Fuel Metering Head (2nd Hand)

Headlight (2nd Hand)

Service Parts (Oil Filter, Fuel Filter, Air Filter, Oil Change, New Spark Plugs, New Cap, New HT Leads)

And I reckon my total is about £1,500 or just under.

That's a good list Jay. I don't know why the Red C's seem to be low maintenance but people seem to be spending less on them, or getting better deals all over the shop! Riley sold his £225 one recently for a profit too!

Just realised my febi rear wheel bearings don't come with a little pouch of grease. I think when I did the Jetta's bearings, I used some thick grey stuff - could be lithium grease?

Anyone got any pointers? :confused4:

Thanks,

Jon.
