  1. I've always run 7" wide rims and had no problems at the rear, be it dropped or not. However my suspention cups are standard. Im sure both sets of my rims have about 35ET. Either option seems worthy to me though. So which job is cheapest? The spacers you can do your self for sure, and probably even be able to change the cups your self too; flip a coin maybe. Having said that, im not a fan of spacers and prefer to get the correct ET wheel for the setup. If you space the wheel out, with your current drop, will you foul the arch? Remember that it will handle differently too !!!!
  2. yeh cheers Simon, I know. Just giving a bit of an update really. Got nothing more penetrating than WD40; I certainly made sure the 1/2 drive was well and truely in and car was secure on stands (new purchase from Machinemart) - for anyone else using stands, I often use wood between the cup face and the car, as wood doesnt slide the same as metal on metal. As said, will get my friendly garage to do it; minimal charge.
  3. you said NEARLY bold ; was there still visible tread all over and the 1.6 on 75 percent of the rest of the tyre? Should pass if it was.
  4. Had a stab at replacing these rear sensors at the weekend. Seemed like a nice job at the end of a sunny saturday. It didn't go to plan. Undid the sensor and then pulled at it; sure enough the cable came away with part of the internals, but missing the metal outer sheath and sensor; those remained stuck in there. The outer sheath would not collapse and therefore was stuck in. Therefore opted for option B, to remove the disc and punch it through from the other side. However the carrier bolts are totally rusted on and a reasonable amount of force on a 2.5ft bar did not seem to budge it. Fearing of shearing the bolt heads, I've resided to taking it to a garage where they can get some heat on these bolts. :?
  5. You could put the new spings onto your existing shocks then get teh shocks swapped at a later date as funds allow , however it means more cost, as the fittment of the New shocks will mean you have to get the front camber etc alignment done all over again; wait if you can.
  6. Does it need to be a 16v? The VR6's are great if you've got over £3k and many of them seem to have leather. The 2.0L came in about the time of CAT's being intorduced; expect the higher miles for your price, whereas £2.5 will secure you a 100k car (ie just a little more than our friend below with the 1.8,). No the spoilers do not go wrong often, its an age related thing; if concenred you can take it apart and lube it up, de-crud it and put it back together again before it goes pop; there is a HOW TO on the forum. Similarly the sunroof is fixable and shown on here. Buying guide and also common fixes and also specifications are in the Knowledgebase Wiki HERE.
  7. Safely yes. The 40mm springs will go on, but has an effect. Been said before, so quickly: a lower spring will be stiffer to reduce the amount of travel and therefore forces the car up quicker; to smooth this out, where the car rebounds, people often install sports shocks which combat this; compared to a standard shock that is meant for a standard rate spring - a standard shock would not slow the upwards movement enough. But yes, it will work to a degree.
  8. Goldie, think you'll be holding out for that DB5 longer than I'll wait for a Z4,
  9. Jim, thats a joke ! :joker2: I see Sainsbury's are new-ish to the market of car ins ; do they tend to target a certain list of cars to be the cheapest on? Although there was another company that was £800 on the Z4, fully comp; again thats better than what I can get a VR6 on fully-C. Im off to see how it will ever be possible to afford to buy a Z4 - LOL ps - maybe see yu at Gti Int this year
  10. No worries, now bought one; you're welcome to borrow Jim if yours is 9A too.
  11. fetching.... real manly. (no offense Dom, I had a bike with pink writing on it) I guess this covers the 9A engine, but not the brakes / hubs ??? Have you got one Jim?
  12. can never smell mine beside the car much, but followed it home once in another car and it stank horrid !! A month later the Cat went clank-ety-clank-clank; again , cannot smell anything off this ceramic cat.
  13. Just after some clarification, as its often discussed how the Golf shares parts with the Corrado 16v, such as brakes etc. However I see from old threads that some guys suggest the 1988-91 Passat Haynes Manual for the 16v. Is this correct, or will the Golf 92-98 (9781859607626) suffice for engine and brake work? . (it does say 2.0 16v 4 cyl - but is it a different engine??)
  14. As the VR6 keeps coming out at about £500 for TPFT compred to my 16v at under £300, I was wondering what else I could afford. Firstly the Honda S2000, insurance group 20, would need to be Fully Comp, and came in at a whopping £1,700 - ouch !! Then here is one that totally baffled me: BMW Z4, 3.0 Coupe, £550 with Sainsbury's then the next at £800. Now thats a little more acheivable... Thats a better deal than the Corrado VR6 on lower cover. (not sure what group the Z4 coupe is exactly, would assume group 19 but could easily be wrong). Now baring in mind that Sainsburys would probably whack on an extra £50 when you phone them up and confirm the Reg #, still not bad.
  15. Easy to disconnect? I think the car looks smarter with it down; just still love to see it pop up though - such a cool gimmick ! see the new TT has a similar idea. Apparantly that huge one on the 911 does make a difference though; sure is big enough; didn't they also say that the small fin on the rear of the Mk1 TT made a difference too.
  16. pictures were shown in the first post fella. I understand Ace no longer make those ones. Now also considering these:
  17. just the hub ; to get it outta the way of the abs sensor , as the little f**** has corroded onto the swing arm.
  18. Very good find and brilliant price; although cannot see hundreds of people wanting just one. Just imagine a set of 4 going for 164. 8) Was thinking of these two wheels my self as a cheap alternative :(
  19. A fine looking example from that distance. Enjoy! As for the SPOILER, there is the Spolier overhaul thread here.
  20. You've stripped the spoiler mech' down then Dom? ... as per the spoiler thread. Good luck, looks like a b**** of a job !!
  21. Simple quick question. Planning on taking the rear hub off tomorrow and just wondering if its a simple task. Having only ever done the drum sort on the Golf before. Any hints / tips appreciated cheers
  22. Plans? As for not having a multimeter, can't you just use a fuse that you know is working from another circuit? Did cheesewire get rid of his VAGCOM? Alternatively can't you search the VAGCOM THREAD for people who do own it??? ----- you say that it wont work, but atleast you can rule it out if it doesnt work. 3rdly , if its not getting juice, how does it normally get juice, how can it not get the juice and is there a way of bodging for 2 minutes to see if it is that item (wire etc)?
  23. hmmm, back to the drawing board for ideas guys ......... possibly need to understand how the whole CL works now. The locking problem remains. I unhooked the electrical connection to the drivers door handle alone. I used the drivers door (obviously without central locking on this side, as its disconnected) with no problems. Therefore thought the problem must be the drivers handle. However I came to use the passenger door, where the central locking works fine; or so it seems. I unlocked the car from the passenger side, opened the door, shut it again and locked the car fully, whereby the roof shut too. 5 minutes later I got in via the drivers door, where obviously only this door opens with the normal mechanical way. Got in the car and as the door shut, the entire CL system did a self LOCK, and locked me in. So therefore the SAME PROBLEM remains. Any ideas what the problem is? . has disconnecting the drivers side electrics done this? . is there a main CL switch somewhere in the car, possibly beside the pump, that sends a signal to the CL to lock and is faulty? . how easy is it to check all the pipes? (although still certain its an electrical problem) :(
  24. Nice rocco and love the BBS. Tempest will also be loving a bit of that too. Cool buggy - anything like the one in the original Thomas Town Affair driven by Mcqueen?
  25. Jim, who is HIC? I just got my best quote off Adrian Flux
