  1. ~looks down at gears~ , yup all there, nothing wrong with 1st or 2nd. Why oh why Jimmy do you hate 1+2? Yeh, ok, 1st is snatchy, but its required when in slow [-10mph] moving traffic. Im the one who refuses to stop unless required, and will use 2nd, but whatever i do, i refuse to slip the clutch like the rest of those peeps. But then again, i do drive into Brum, whereas you have no such worries. ;) back to speed humps...
  2. At first they kinda worked, especially with women. But nowadays, people tend to ignore them, any car, not just 4x4s. I never speed in a built up area, because i couldnt live with the guilt if i were to hit someone. I cannot belive the ammount of aggressive/dangerous driving by the general public; town driving being the most hazardous. Mostly women (Clio) or old men in (Jags) who dont know the size of thier car, feel the need to go over the white line. The train station car park also has a nasty bump due to construction. So this bird in her F0cus came right up my chuffer, as i negotiated my way over the bump (as i found that a particular angle, at walking speed avoided any scraping). She continued to sit up my arse, in the 30 zone, then the 40. ..oO(com on you stupid cow, why dont you overtake if you wanna speed?) . Ah, now for the national speed limit - bye ....... yup sure enough, she was still busy adjusting the mirror for her makeup when i had dissappeared into the distance. Thats where speed belongs. Speed humps are not making me a safer driver, as i never break the limit anyway etc, very observant. Im always thinking about fuel consumption too, as i accelarate away - indirectly being enironmentally concious too. :) Maybe it is a good thing we slow down the "Chavs" , but they're only going to find back roads, or worse still, accelerate hard between humps and forget to consider hidden dangers. Then you've got the reps using them as launch pads... so - dunno whats worse. Just limit the chavs to 20bhp.
  3. Im fed up with all the speed humps, they dont do any good in the majority. The worst are the single lane humps; often high, too wide to miss - they ruin your tracking, or skirts. Often people drive down the middle of a road, or swerve to avoid them = danger! The ones in Knowel are positioned so you cant miss them. I prefer the road wide ones; in some places they work, if close to gether, ie not allowing you to get upto speed. However it can be said that shallow humps do nothing for slowing people up. Then you get very steep/high ones, eg Leicester, and that scraping sound of your skirt ripping off makes my skin crawl. These sites name several more bad points: http://www.abd.org.uk/speed_humps.htm http://www.seered.co.uk/roadhumps.htm sorry if this is a common/old thread
  4. As seen as Im part of 'every one', I'd say: I dont think the black, silver & red really work. I'd polish them [colour coded 2nd]. Better still, why not stop wasting your money and buy a Corrado - joking
  5. You decide, within reason. Im using 36(f) 29(b) The front is higher due to weight of engine. But try tweaking them by a single pound a time. Temperature will cause more changes. Do your tyres come up to temperature when driven briskly? Higher front pressure should make for lighter, quicker steering.
  6. Simple rule - you need enough thread into the locating thread (hole) as much as the width (diameter) of the bolt. For example 12mm on mine. You can have a bolt too long, as there is a tad bit of clearance out the back, (but its at your own risk).
  7. I'm looking at the Bilstein shocks for the front. Does anyone here use them? If so, which, and what were the implications? I was looking at the S00 8055, but cannot figure what comes in that kit.
  8. '... no, i was doing 70. Honest officer - it just fell off '
  9. Im fed up with it. Every where I go I have to consider if my car is safe, from either mindless vandalism or theft. Today, parked in one small nice spot of Birmingham (slight contracdition in terms), I walked 200yrds to a shop to get some change for the parking meter. Once inside I heard my car alarm go off, so dashed outside, saw some lad drive off (who had been sat behind me). And no it wasnt the motion sensor; I know for fact that the alarm was set off by the door being tried. I suppose this has been a factor in big cities for many years, but its creeping into towns too. What is there to deter them? Nothing!
  10. Does anyone know of a local paint repair person (Cov/Bham) who can touch up a front bumper scuff (3x0.5")? One quote so far is at £100 :( PM's welcome too
  11. Does anyone know of a local place to Cov/B'ham that will do scuffs to paint, reasonable price? ........ [yes i tried that site above]
  12. "Umm" useful - thanks! Oh yeh, i see, get out of the car, roll up my shirt sleeves and pop the bonnet whilst at the side of the road and hit the brake stuff randomly till the light goes off. Cheers  Does the manual state that you should STOP immediately? Im guessing it was just an electrical fault as when i stopped and restarted it went off and stayed off. Brake fluid top.
  13. What are you supposed to do if it does stay on ??
  14. Fan. Driving home it did it again, till i got onto the open roads then it cooled. Only then it struck me that maybe the fan wasnt working. A bit slow i know. I will test it on Saturday; cables, fuse & fan. Whats the typical cost of a fan?
  15. Ahhh - I used the Silver in the Golf. Shame no-one here wanted that car, the engine sounded like it was new; there were no noises, tapping, rattling etc. Good for another 100k. Lets hope the new owners appreciate that. [i'll stop rambling now]
  16. Cheers lads, I'll keep an eye on it over summer. I do think that the fan should be able to maintain a constant temp though, at whatever spec is required by vw; I'll flush it all out the spring; water & oil. I'll take a look at the grill too; bent, flies. Like i say, im sure theres no leaks. Do you guys tend to use the Quantum(Gold) or a brand? I will defo' use vw filters. --- & yeh, it was rather warm in the car, even with the roof tilted open; hate to image doing the same trick in summer. I know - avoid traffic.
  17. I only know from bikes that 100 is fairly normal and 110 is high. Pending the tuned status. Cheers Henny; i guess i did right then. Lets hope summer doesnt worsen the problem. What temp do you get?
  18. Yes its the oil temp as shown on the MFA, before you get ambient temp. You're saying 114 is ok? What is the range? Cheers -> Jim
  19. Since i got the car in November, the temp gauge has been reading about 100'C. It gets upto a high 90 soon, then gradually reaches 100 to 102C. However, today, which is a fairly cool day, sat in traffic, i noticed it was upto 114'C. With no idea if was loosing coolant, i truned my heaters on full and it dropped to 110. Got to work and found that all fluid levels are perfect. I was just slighly concerned that i will over heat in the summer. WHAT SHOULD THE ENGINE TEMP READ ? Cheers, Stu
  20. I didnt even question my car when i saw i was getting about 27mpg. This includes 50% short runs and 50% motorway at 70mph. I just figured it was hungry. I agree with Paddy, that the only way to know you mpg is by topping up and resetting the trip; as my MFA said 25mpg, but my calcs say 27. What are the expected urban and motorway target mpg's? Im sure if i drove my car hard all the time it would drop to about 20mpg. As the car doesnt tend to pick up till after 5revs.
  21. Cheers Steve, thought it might catch peoples attention; just livens the thread up a bit. Im happy with the car. Stu & Bally, they're not the G60 set i was looking for but a set of 15x7. Letters unknown.
  22. very 8) Got any plans for it, other than a polish? The clear rear lights on the blue one look good; will you put a red set on the red car? Are you starting your own fleet? - joke. :0
  23. 8) Cool Nice Mk1 too, had it long? :thumb right: Those are the bbs i was after.
  24. Ahh, the Purple Head... i mean front. Anyone got any idea what kind of money the 17x7 Teamdynamics-Vulcan would fetch? [3 good cond, 1 with scuffs to spokes (by previous fella)].
