  1. Never had any issues, never worn gloves. Used many brands from meguires to Mer, I think they're just wording it for the snowflakes.... Grab a bacon sandwich, a good strong cuppa and attack it like a kid from the 70's! ;)
  2. Massively under-priced at a grand... I've seen absolute hanging bags of turds go for more than that... just look at my car! LOL! :D
  3. Cheers mate - you too. The Old Banger is hiding away from the rain and snow! ;) Getting it ready to get the engine and front running gear back in, I'll then strip the rear out and do the same, all new or refinished as new, it will then more than likely head up to Silverstone for the engine to go in and all the other nice bits... my mate has a Snap-on tool kit that blokes go wobbly at the knees for :D, is an absolute wealth of knowledge and more on the OCD spectrum than I am on his finishing work.
  4. I did the rears on my MK2 GTI... From memory we used something along the lines of these, with various sockets, metal plate, and bearings as press tools. https://www.screwfix.com/p/hilka-pro-craft-reversible-gear-puller-4-100mm/12510 But the axle was on the floor and not in the car
  5. Merry Christmas all! Back to work today :(
  6. As others have said "the heads gone" is a very broad diagnosis.... and I definitely wouldn't sell it just for that. My advice would be have a go yourself... the parts are cheap and there's a wealth of knowledge on here.
  7. Torqued all the end caps in, rod and crankshaft... Fitted oil pump and crank end seal... You gotta love aqua blasting [emoji6] Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using Tapatalk

  9. Last minute Christmas Bargain anyone? The £230 bonnet cable is BACK! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162809219416?ul_noapp=true
  10. Fingers crossed! ;) Engine looks really good now, fitted the pistons, head and cams on saturday... gearbox cases have gone for aquablasting, should be dropping it back on the floor soon ready for the engine to go back in.

    Bitcoin

Shouldn't loose sleep over it mate, its all relevant and seems like a good idea at the time I guess, I sold my first house for less than a third of its value now... regret that.. should of carried on renting it out, hey ho Gave up Australian residency visa as well... regret that too, I was 6 months away from passport aplication LOL! Spoke to a mate about bitcoin years ago before 99% of people had heard of it and we were talking about setting up a miner as we're both techs... never did. :D
  12. My car named as "The Old Banger" by my son is getting Eibachs, Bilstiens and new mounts... but its list of goodies to date is pretty eye watering :( - from forged pistons, cams, VGI, wheels, re-wrapped loom, brakes... and hundreds spent on gaskets, timing chains, fixings, powder coating, paint.. list is huge
  13. Another hands up for the 18T fuel economy... probably the best MPG performance car I've ever run. reasonably modified AUM that rolled just shy of 240bhp You can just sit on the torque and down the motorway at a fair old rate it would nudge high 30's and 40's without to much problem. But... boot it and it will guzzle, it was dam good fun thou... what VW let leave the factory as a MK4 GTI was a pig, but once a few bits were done it was a formidable weapon.

    Forged Pistons?

Had a measure up at the weekend... I'm not sure what gaskets he's using bit the MLS is incredibly thin... just by looking at it you can see and then feel how thin it is. First the new fibre gasket then the MLS These are both Elring gaskets, unused and un-crushed, but I understand after crushing the MLS is 0.6mm and the fibre will be 1.6mm so 1mm of difference... that's pretty substantial. there's absolutely no way the difference in thickness is 0.05mm as the fella had used in his calculations. With the block being decked I was concerned about the squish hitting the head the MLS really is that thin. Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using Tapatalk

Always been a bit miffed with payment to join a forum... I'll happily click sponsors and on several occasions have made donations, I even donated an xbox to the XBMC project many years ago... 10 quid to join... errrr no thanks.

    Forged Pistons?

Hiya Dox Yeah I did have a read through these... but when I speak to tuners and engine builders they say it does have an impact... so I was bit torn on what to do.. With the block decked and the 10.5 ratio pistons I was hoping to get to almost 11.0 with the extra from the block shave and MSL gasket... Hmmmmmm decision... :s

    Forged Pistons?

Cheers Cressa ;) Its really starting to take shape now... really pleased with it, should be a good example with my level of OCD once done, everything will ether be new or re I'll get an update in my build thread as soon as I can - I've taken loads of pictures but Photobucket knocked the wind out of my sails and I find tapatalk a bit of a drag.

    Forged Pistons?

Hmmmm am I pushing it here.... Block has been decked... cylinder head has been skimmed - both only to clean them up for the MK4 MLS head gasket I had intended to use... But the VR as far as I understand runs a negative deck... ie the pistons raise above the block and the quench pads rely on the head gasket to avoid a coming together with the head... this combined with SM 263 cams... hmmmm am I pushing my luck? The new pistons are 10.5:1 - anyone else been done this path?
  20. How many row oil cooler for a VR6? - I thought they got a bit cold with oil coolers?

    Forged Pistons?

Morning Yes its coming along now, block has been decked, bored, cleaned and painted, crank, rods and flywheel have all been balanced.. all the aluminum parts and the gearbox casings have gone off for aqua-blasting, should look like new ;) Engine bay is painted and I've started re-wrapping the loom... got more stuff heading to the powder coaters... hope to have the front end back on the ground soon.. once all the new suspension turns up ;) Then I'll start on the back end.
