Its not mate unless you've got some after market thing, your right that it connects to the slam panel when it down (not in use). have a closer look and you'll see that it connects to the wing on a rubber grommet trust me!!

The bonnet stay is connected to the passenger wing mate

Just thought i'd post a few pics of the day out on Sunday 4th June at Oulton Park for the British Touring car championship. Bit of a grim day but that didnt put a dampener on things and me and my bro had a good day. The noise the touring cars put out is awesome. 109 i think is ecu relay mate, i only said it could be these as the GF had a similar prob with hers where she went to overtake a lorry and the engine died completely, pulled over and it restarted first time. I got her some new relays and the problem went

When it died at 70mph did you get any clicking type noises from the fuses box area?? If you did could be a faulty relay either the fuel pump or ecu relay if they have never been changed its worth changing them.

Sounds like a mis-fire fella i would be checking coilpack, HT leads and spark plugs.
