  1. Not sure, but I think you can rule out it being a problem with the cables . If it was a matter of cable adjustment then you'd be able to get into 1st easy but not reverse or visa versa. It'd still be worth having a bit of a play around with the cables to rule that out completely. Does it go into gear better when the cars engine isnt running? Netx time when its playing up, stop, turn your engine off, and try the gears both with clutch down and up. May give you a better idea of whether its a clutch problem.
  2. TopGear by miles! My dad watches TopGear even though he has no real interest in cars. Jeremy Clarkson and Hamster are capable of presenting other shows, e.g. brainiac and the brunnel thing. I cant see any of the 5th gear presenter having enough charisma to present anything else. Tiff is good for doing massive power slides, but he should stick to that. Vicky gets right on my nerves; she's like one of those qiz tv presenter, pouting every couple of seconds trying to look sexy. Just get on with it! What H8RRA said about clock watching is right on the money. I even channel surf when watching 5th gear. For the first 15mins of the 5th gear show with the Honda NSX on they spent all there time trying to get us to phone into there premium rate competition line.
  3. Thats cool Darren! Who needs air ride when it sits that sweet! I've got a huge puddle in the drivers side passenger foot well of my Passat B5. Its caused by a drain hole under the battery geting clogged with leaves, etc. I havnt got around to sorting it yet, but thought with the weather getting worse and there being leaves about it'd be worth letting you know to keep an eye on yours to avoid any flooding! ;-) Yours is a later model than mine so VW may have sorted it out. Its the second time mines done it.
  4. I've got a spare 02a case and diff. Let me know what the damage to you box is?
  5. I just spray WD40 all over anything that’s electrical and playing up. It works for me sometimes!! Wicked new sig pic above! Fingers crossed for the MOT!
  6. Yep, as henny has stated. The pins/bolts holding the crown wheel to the diff can snap and shoot through the casing. It’s pretty common on 020 boxes and very early 02A boxes, but VW fitted thicker pins to most 02A boxes and all the 02J ranges.
  7. Cheers Andy, I've been off trying to find one on google.
  8. Aren’t those posh wooden decked speed boats you get in bond movies in Venice called Rivo's? They cost between £60k and £100k+, so maybe VW are trying to associate this new model with one. *EDIT No, there called Riva's!! http://www.rivarevival.com/boats_for_sale.htm
  9. I've heard all the motoring jornos say good things about the hyundai coupe. Comparing the corrado, a 15 year old car, to a brand new highly rate coupe is no great insult.
  10. Great to see your cars come on leaps and bounds since I was last one the forum! Seams so close now! You where spot on about how quickly I made progress striping my camper. I haven’t touched it since! lol MIG welders arrived now though so work will recommence as soon as the body pannels turn up. Still won’t be nearly as impressive and ambitious as this though…….one day! Keep up the crazy project, gonna be a legend of a motor this!!
  11. You need 100mm flanges to match up to g60 drive shafts. I think most 02j boxes come with 108mm flanges. The 02j 100mm flanges (fitted to non-turbo 20v boxes I think) are about £108 a pair last time I checked with VAG. 02j flanges are different to 02a ones as they are spring loaded and bolt into the diff. I’ve found they give slightly better traction because the spring reduces slip very slightly. I'm not convinced that the internals in a 02j are stronger from that of most 02a. The designs are almost identical apart from flanges and shifter. I have an 02a final drive and third gear in my 02j box. The gears and other parts are interchangeable and many 02j parts have 02a part numbers. Also, very early 02a boxes (manufatured early 89, first run of 02a's) have smaller crown wheels studs which can cause problems (snaping and shooting out of the gearbox case), but in most 02a boxes and all 02j's these studs are bigger and stronger. (same part numbers too) I have an early 02j shifter on my box that connects directly to the g60 cables. It’s definitely a better gear change. Whether this is because the box is fresher or the effect of the 02j counter weight I don’t really know. EDIT* I think the benefits of getting an 02j box are, the availability of low mileage ones, better feeling shift mech and the very slightly better diff. The problems are getting the correct flanges and getting either an early 02j shifter or modifying a late shifter to take g60 gear cables.
  12. I'm quite impressed with how helpful the BBC have been in this thread. Good on them and well done blue_joe!!
  13. LOL, You'd never be able to go around a corner with that "Race Spool" non sliping diff! LOL
  14. You may aswell stick with a g60 box, because if it goes wrong its only £150 for a replacement from a breakers. At £150 a time you can afford to go through one now and again. If you went for anything else and had problems with it, the cost of replacment would probably be huge. Also if you fitted an LSD to an 02A g60 box and it threw a couple of gear teeth. I think you'd be very unlucky if your LSD got damaged as there sealed.
  15. Check these guy out http://www.proalloy.co.uk/ If want a really flashy custom job done on a bespoke rad, intercooler, fans and oilcooler setup these are the guys. All made from high quality TIG welded stainless steel, mint! Think its "Rallye" on dubforce who had a complete setup built for him and it looked sweeeet!! Very compact too!
  16. fitted mine in the boot! oops sorry cai jsut used your login (samg60)
  17. Cool, how these things spread! ;-)
  18. CoxyLaad Is what I've been told about clearance true? (as I described in previous post)
  19. I think the problem with a 6 speed box is clearance on the chassis leg when getting it in and out. This can be tricky with a 5 speed box. The 6 speed box has a third shaft so is quite a lot bigger/taller than a 5 speed that has two shafts. This extra height makes clearing the chassis leg almost impossible so I’ve heard. I don’t know if it could be done by removing the engine, fitting the box then putting the engine and box in as one unit. But could be the way?!?! Think it was a man at a VW breaker who told me this and I read something about it in a PVW when someone fitted a 6 speed into a mk4 and had similar problems with clearance. (into a mk4 that was originaly 5 speed)
  20. What are the symptoms of your box? If 1st and 2nd are okay I'm sure someone with a g60 would want them of you!
  21. I've got a 4.25 final drive from an 02j box that'll fit your box. You can have it for a very resonable price if you want! I had a 02j box from and Audi A3 with this 4.25 final drive, but as I use the car everyday I changed it myself for a 3.6. PM me if you want the 4.25 or any advice on changing the final drive.
  22. interesting article lol http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/better_2 ... percharger
  23. Good idea gradeAfailure. I started a post titled VW breakers before. I cant find it at the moment as search isnt working for me. But there's a few address, phone numbers and URL's in that thread.
  24. The VR6 box's final drive is probably to long for your needs. Most stick with the g60 final drive when swaping to VR 1st and 2nd. You'll get 65mph or there abouts with a VR second and G60 final drive. I think a UK vr has a 3.39 final drive where as a G60 has a 3.6 final drive. (US vr 3.6)Also if you change the final drive you will need to buy some crown wheel bolts to replace the factory rivets that VW use. Be warned that a crown wheels bolt kit from VW for most 02a boxes is £109 or there abouts. So sticking with the g60 final drive will save you some money. Carl, to change the final drive you have to remove the crown wheel from the diff (needs drilling and expensive replacement bolts) and the entire output shaft is also part of the final drive. So you have to push/pull all the gears off that to. So its a little less work to change just 1st and 2nd than a final drive. Have a read through this thread http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23240 skip the first few pages, then there loads of info and links on gearbox's and ratios.
