Even the irwins had a tough time! Access each side was awkward meaning the breaker bar wasnt allowed much movement. Passenger side bolts were cracked off using a short socket with a stilson at 90degrees providing the turning moment. I'll prob do the discs, bearings and cages next year. Btw Dox i found the old calipers from you. Might be a new project to strip and rebuild them! They were off a 1999 Golf V5 estate I broke, even rarer than a storm as it turns out - my bad

fla 9 Posted September 14, 2020 Went to replace the front top mounts and thought i'd check the bump stops. Should have thought about it before but they were well and truly past it! Ordered 2 but was only delivered one so have to wait for the other one. Used a Golf Mk4 one from Febi part number 18365. I also had some Poly bushes but not sure if they were for the front or back. Anyway, decided against using them here might check the rear ones though. The top mounts didnt look too bad, tbh and the bearings were fine too but i think it was perhaps not a bad option. Looking to do the wishbone bushes and perhaps rear axle bushes next year Just drag and dropped the pics so the order is a little confused!
_Matt_ 32 Posted September 14, 2020 Good work, I've just bought one of those magnetic camber/caster tools on seeing it in your pics. Didn't know such thing existed but great to beable to get a ball park on re-assembly.
fla 9 Posted September 14, 2020 (edited) I found it quite useful but forgot to take account of the slope on my driveway. Planning to put it across the slam panel about midway to get a horizontal reference and then take measurements from there. Not sure how to adjust toe though. I guess it should be slightly toe-in? Also, what should the camber be? Around -1.5 or so? Edited September 14, 2020 by fla
_Matt_ 32 Posted September 14, 2020 Camber yes a spot of negative. Not 100 percent the numbers. Im learning this myself right now as fed up taking my car to garages and ending up with steering at an angle when going straight. As I understand it to get toe you need to form a box around the car and take measurements. There are some relatively inexpensive tools to help. Here's a useful link on the theory.http://www.beardmorebros.co.uk/website%20pages/how%20to/tracking.htmSent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
seanl82 23 Posted September 14, 2020 Bentley says -1° for camber. When I had mine done on a Hunter though, the system said -1.5°. I told them to aim for -1°, though they couldn't really manage it very well so still need to get it done again as I'm not overly happy with it.
fla 9 Posted September 15, 2020 That's useful, thanks. I'll aim for -1deg and see how that goes. Do you do camber before toe, or the other way round, or doesnt it matter?
seanl82 23 Posted September 15, 2020 I'd say toe first, though the camber will put it out slightly whilst adjusting but toe is easier to correct and will only need a minor tweak afterwards.
ABV-VR6 12 Posted September 19, 2020 Thanks for documenting all that work you've done with the MK4 rear calipers. It's further down in my list of things to do... That camber tool is very cool, never seen that before and I'm going to buy one! Keep up the good work and thanks for all those pictures. Cheers mate
easypops 8 Posted September 19, 2020 Great work, this is the first time I’ve had a chance to use that gauge I bought a few years ago, totally forgot I had it until I saw your picture 👍😎
fla 9 Posted September 22, 2020 Found 2 more annoying rattles - the d/side window.motor against the door skin. Thin piece of neoprene sheet and its gone. Plus some adhesive felt behind the door pull. Forgot to take pics but its nothing spectacular!
fla 9 Posted November 5, 2020 heater dial illumination. A bit too bright so need to put some sensible resistors in there

fla 9 Posted November 6, 2020 Removed the airbag from the golf wheel. Replaced the studs with M6 nuts and bolts with no washers - otherwise the horn contacts don't touch.

fla 9 Posted November 6, 2020 Tbh it only took about half an hour all in. Once the clips around the cage were pushed in it was quite easy. But that cage edge is really sharp so gloves were needed to edge it off. Just need to fit a flying lead for each end of the horn connectors
GrahamU 6 Posted November 7, 2020 Nice work on the airbag, how you connecting the horn plate? I had to make up a panel that bolted to the back of the wheel so it used the same slip ring as the corrado, problem was it then covered the holes to pop the airbag panel off, so dont forget before you pop the airbag on 😉

I'm thinking of cutting some nylon spacers to attach to the ring so it maintains the gap. I believe the ring floats comfortably but haven't got to that bit yet! No doubt there will be some issues! The other mistake was the hole made for the slip ring extension arm is slightly out of position. So rather than opening the hole in the wheel I'm trimming the top 3-4mm off the ring
fla 9 Posted June 20, 2022 Horrible slow job today, removing the adhesive from the old bonnet foam. Two sections done, but I'm really fed up with it. Don't know how to motivate myself to do the other 3. White spirit, plastic scraper block and a thin plastic piece were weapons of choice..

I'd be tempted to flip it over soak kitchen roll (to stop evaporation) in the chosen solvent, leave resting on the bonnet and go and do something for an hour while it softens Edited June 21, 2022 by Dox
