Corrado rear bench - Warning Triangle and First Aid Kit.....
Scott replied to Andy947's topic in General Car Chat
All 2.0 16V corrados dont have arm rest in middle.... every other model does.... switches and interior didnt change till late 92 / early 93....... so obviously got a early 92... -
right scott m8....the standard discs are 280mm....the cheapest and most minor upgrade you can get is ATE power groove discs from euro-car-parts they are approx £3 per disc dearer than the standard one listed by themselves and approx £5 per disc cheaper than what a stealer would charge and cos they're ATE they are o/e or better standard hth Cheers guys *:) I landed up going to gsf and buying 280mm zimmerman oe discs... with pagid pads... cost me just under 100 squids all in... run them in for 100 miles being nice and gentle.... So why DO they FADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????   Twice I braked hard from high speed... third time they started fading.... thought would expected more from new setup ? - Got back home and they were smoking on the fronts!

LOL... he is un employed therefore skint ..... so think coil overs going to be a bit heavy on the wallet.... I'd stick with the sachs shocks myself mate - heard great things about them - got to be better than the ones I have on my VR!!! - why is it that the rear shocks are first to go ? - any theories ? *:) Scott

Anyone from here going ? Fancy meeting up for convoy down to dubsport ? :D Scott

It doesnt really give you power - more like just changes the way the cam comes in.... 2.0 16V has mild cams so that it has plenty of mid range power.... putting 1.8 16V cams that are quite wild will effectively reduce mid range but the engine will come on 'song' at 4000rpm with a nice surge to boot.... it depends what you like... Bear in mind the 1.8 cams are driven from a dizzy....
-
None of the above *:) Do what Im doing.... go into GSF and order four Sachs shocks for £125.... then whilst there order a set OE Discs (£50) and a set of pagid pads.. (£12)... then go fit em. For £200 you will have all new shocks (decent handling again) and decent front brakes (you will stop well!) Oh and bear in mind bilsteins for VR6 arent recommended..... very firm apparently. Scott

Well mine is a 1993 Corrado VR6 in Aqua Blue and bought it with 95k miles, 1 lady owner and FSH.. most of it VW / Specialist .... those of you that have seen pics will know its very tidy... to make concours would need to spend £500 on having some chips and scratches done... It cost me £3600 in October. Scott.

Hello mate, All the belts are a piece of cake to do on the 1.8 16V..... as you say for alternator you knock off the bolt that tensions it then replace belt and tighten up - remember not to tighten the belt too much as can stress the bearings on the alternator.... power steering belt is a similar job but you will have to do it from underneath - this belt only runs from crank to ps pump - ie. two pulleys... so once you have loosened it off, replace belt and tighten up again - *:) - all very easy - a decent haynes golf manual will take you through the job step by step. Other than these belts the only other belt is the timing belt.... this needs to be done every 40k miles - VW state 60k but I always did mine at 40k to be on safe side.... again its a simple job considering its a 16V - ie. you dont need to worry about lining up to camshafts as the belt only runs round one of the pulleys due to a chain on other side of engine connecting two pulleys together.... One thing to check out whilst you are in that area is the water pump - I assumed my problem was wrongly the alternator bearings giving up the ghost.... not so - driving back from London was alarmed to find I was losing water fast... the pump bearings had failed - sounded awful! Cheers, Scott

Well I got clear standard looking ones from Halfords last year for £12... and on dark cars looks to doo-daas :D :D Scott.

Well I thought it was time I went for a 'proper' drive of the VR6 with my mate who ownes the Celica.... he was gob smacked just how quick the VR6 is *:) - held the revs at 3k rpm and dump the clutch from lights and up through the gears - seriously satisfying *:) heh heh.... not something I make a habit off but I was grinning from ear to ear - said mate hit his head on head rest LOL *:) Im going to stick with the VR and get some new shocks *:) Scott
-
Funnily enough my Mum has a Hyundai Coupe *:).... didnt rate the engine on that at all! - horrible thing! *:) LOL Also my other mate has a 1997 Celica which is old shape and it doesnt look that bad - at least I dont think it does *:) I think its time for some new shocks and then we'll see how it goes *:) - but even my missus says the VR6 suits me as its butch *:) - Celica is a girls car she says *:) LOL

Difference between 'book' price and what a car is genuinely worth are two different things - it all depends on condition... From what you say I would estimate a 94 VR6 that is mint and with very low miles to be worth around £6k... poss a little more but £9k is very heavy indeed no matter how clean a example it is - a tidy storm can be had for same money.... Scott

Mmmm...... Well my best mate come over last night in his Boss's Toyota Celica - my mate gets his own in 2-6 weeks depending on when it turns up... so anyway went for a test drive in this Celica and Ive got to admit I was very impressed. Now I drive a VR6 and wasnt exepcting the Celica to even come close but I though the chassis and response on the Celica were awesome - we were pulling through round abouts at 45mph in the wet! - If I did that in the VR6 I would be wearing armco :( So anyone else had experience of one of these cars ? The performance was a let down after the VR6 but it held on to the gears well and went very well for 140bhp... reminded me alot of my old Corrado 1.8 16V... gearbox on the Celica was fantastic (6 speed)... quick changes very easy... as were full throttle shifting .. Im half tempted to go out and buy the 190 version   8) Or maybe I should just get new shocks and top mounts then just rung rings round the Celica ? Scott

Dont worry about any of the sensors just make sure the VAGCOM or similar software is used to show if any faults - this will tell you if any problems with sensors.... If you need to replace the timing chain \ tensioners on a VR6 that you are looking at then walk away........... its an expensive job and too be honest if it needs doing you have to question why asI know of several VR6's that are nearly touching 200k with original chains / tensioners.... Scott.

Hi Dan, VR6's use oil naturally.... its not un usual to use alot of oil... anything up to 1000kms / per litre is fine Im informed by VW.... So check it weekly! Scott

£9000 ? - I didnt think ANY Corrado is worth that kind of money these days!!!! Im seeing storms going for £7k !

A couple of things different between the 92/93 models.... Interior controls, etc different - most switches, heater, etc Also on 93 onwards VW strengthened the syncho by using different materials.. as 92 VR6's were suffering from crunchy gearboxes - every 92 model I drove seemed to confirm this - do a couple of fast gear changes from 1st to 2nd.... then 3rd to 2nd to check this - its usually second gear that goes first... Exterior door handles are different - if only ergonmically! Dash board clocks are different design as is the steering wheel.... Thats about it really.... I'd go for the 93 model if poss as like said it has DIS which is one less (?) thing to worry about as no moving parts! - very reliable but like said mis-fires can be caused by bad leads, iffy plugs... And if serious about buying then get somebody to check out the ECU with VAG COM to read codes off... Like said you wont realise what a dead camshaft sensor is .... but its not good... it retards the timing into limp home mode as it cannot tell when TDC is at no#1 or no#6... this means you will be well down on power - it will also fry the plugs.... had a mate of a mates storm whos was doing this - he bought it like that... he couldnt believe difference when changed sensor and replaced plugs - he didnt know what he was missing *:) LOL Hope that helps. Scott.

Yes sounds like rear bearings are shot - good news is that they are £8 per side from GSF and simple to fit..... I'd do rear discs at same time to be honest.... Basically take the calipers off.... undo the bearing... slide the disc off.... the remove the bearings and carriers....replace with new stuff... chuck it all back on and do up bearings just do the washer can move... then finish it off.... A Golf Haynes manual will take you through it step by step... Ive done it myself couple of times. New pads, discs and bearings for rear can be had for £50 from GSF Scott

Replace your oil switches chaps.... *:) Mine used to do it alot - replaced the switch and all sorted.... its on the oil filter housing as mentioned and does get covered in all sorts which doesnt help - also checking wiring as mine was dodgy looking......... Scott
-
Most problems of this nature are fuel related.... from what you describe it looks like you have a couple of dicky injectors..... get it down to a bosch agent to test the spray patterns..... When you do get it started after churning it over is there smoke from the exhaust ?
-
VW specify every 60k... but most people do it every 40k.... I dont need to tell you what happens if it lets go do I ? *:)
-
Well I had same problem on my Corrado a year or so ago and it turned out to be a couple of duff cells in the battery... have you another battery can try ?
-
What about perhaps mounting them on the inside of the door ? I had my old Corrado forced under the door handle... a mate of my in the trade sorted the mess out for me and put in some plates behind the handle to stop it happening again before he re painted the door.....
-
Might have to drive down and have a gander - not far from me *:)
-
Me neither mate *;) - just thought see who would bite  Trouble is with some VR6's is that alot of em arent running right so Im told..... A friend of mine who has a Calibra 16v said he beat a Corrado VR6 when racing.... I said it obviously wasnt running correctly...or he wasnt trying... he wouldnt agree with me would he! *:) Heritatage Green ? - wheres that? - Im not a member for one though mate....
