Correct plugs = BKR5EKUP Well seeing as the plat plugs are only £1 more than the non plat NGK plugs then I cant see how much more expensive they are! *;) They do have better longetivity yes - I dont really hope to achieve anything to be honest - VW specify plat plugs for 1993 VR6 onwards therefore thats what my VR6 is going to get *:) simple! How long they last isnt a issue to me anyway as I usually change them every 5k miles but Im a firm believer if main dealer says they were standard fitment then it gets that or better *:) One of the reasons VW might have used plat plugs from 93 is due to the higher voltages produced by the coil pack? or poss to prevent plug fouling ? but most likely to extend service intervals.... no idea! *:) Scott
-
I have but its at home *:) Correct Plugs are NGK BKREU5P or something like that! *:) P denotes PLATINUM! *:) Bosch twins are 2.8 V6 plugs... same as what is in mine!
-
Its a totally different car - I've had a couple of run in's with a Golf VR6 as my mate has one *:) LOL... and everytime I run rings round it and go past him like he is stood still!  Also the chassis is much better than the Golf due to the rear steering effect...
-
Are you sure your not prodding the pedal more due to the extra noise? *:)

I will mention that I have upgraded from a 1991 Corrado 1.8 16V to my present VR6... and the cost differences are pretty minimal - even insurance isnt that much higher (extra £200).. the main difference I feel is fuel costs.... Ive noticed I have to put more fuel in it than my old one but this could also be cos we are paying 80 pence per litre now!

Fair doo's. I've only had my VR6 for less than a week and only driven in for about two days round town and not really slow either. But engine part prices must be cheaper on the G60. :? So how you finding the VR then compared to the G60?... On full chat in the VR6 you'll get around 25mpg... but once you calm down and get used to it you'll get circa 35mpg on a gentle run... I know I do on mine.... have seen 36/37mpg before but thats like granny mode and shifting up at 2k rpm! *:) LOL As said some parts are cheaper for G60 but some are specialised towards the G60 so differences will be minimal - in all fairness the only real parts most need to buy are servicing, maintenance parts - and for the VR6 I have been shocked so far as most of the stuff is very cheap... Oil Filters - £4 Oil - £14 Air Filter - £7 Brake Discs - £25 each Brake Pads - £9 a set Rear bearings - £8 each Rear Brake Discs - £21 Shocks - £35 front / £24 rear All parts are OE from GSF.... so not too bad really! - should imagine G60 is same prices roughly? I know that the VR is one or two insurance groups higher though....
-
WHAT!!!! VR6 never goes above 25mpg! - since when? I regularly see 34-35mpg on my trip comp and working it out from filling up against costs its very accurate! - even when booting it I see more than 25mpg! *:) Parts cheaper for G60 ? - I think you'll find its about the same.... Insurance might be a little higher on VR6 though! Too be honest side by side the G60 might be a little cheaper but will be marginal... VR6 will handle more miles.

Dont know for sure, but I thought the 2.9 used different plugs from the 2.8. Yeah you are right they do - they use plat type plugs from 1993 onwards..... but people have been using 2.8 plugs for years with no probs was told!
-
Another name for same thing then *:) - knew what it was all along - *:) LOL Nope number six cylinder was spot on.. as were all the plugs (grey / brown colour) - it was number one cylinder... thick black sooty matt deposit on plug and Im pretty sure it was carbon / fuelling deposits... am wondering if perhaps number one isnt firing cleanly poss due to bad lead or something and so is carbonning up? The engine has been pronunced in excellent health by VW and various specialists including an engine builder and is giving excellent compressions so I cant see it being a problem with oil burning! Cheers, Scott
-
I thought that was the job of the lambda sensor? *:) Update: Whipped all the plugs out last night to find number one cylinder spark plug covered in thick carbon to the point where the spark it was producing was very poor! - Cleaned them all up and chucked them back in - hey presto - smooth and powerful again  So am now trying to work out what has happened as the engine is mint! My conspiracy theory?: Car was lady owned from new and I suspect she never really used the power and toodled around town in it - I then bought it and run it on nothing but optimax and do drive it hard quite alot (obviously when up to op temps)... with the result that I have loosened some carbon inside the cylinder head..... I believe optimax does have some cleaning properties too... Plugs had only done 6k miles.... bosch standard plugs for 2.8 VR6 Im told.... am off to get some NGK plats this weekend *:) Anyone got any suggestions as to why this has happened? - rest of plugs were spot on... Checked leads, coil pack and plugged in VAGCOM - no faults or anything! Oh... fixed me ABS too *:) heh So she is now all ready for the MOT! Cheers, Scott
-
Can anyone explain the role of the O2 sensor on a VR6 ? Im thinking coil pack at moment...........
-
Well mine used to do that and found out it was the front drivers side sensor playing up - VW techy said that the heat from brakes eventually kills em.... When plugged the VAGCOM into diags socket - 16 faults came up for the ABS *:) LOL... as a result of the light going on and off! *:)

Well my VR has been as good as gold for the six months have owned it... (over 6k miles too) drove it too Bolton last night to drop missus off and got a lot of jealous looks at it as I drove past *:)... she was purring (the VR that is) parked up for an hour then started her up (again the VR) and straight away I knew something was wrong... she is chugging on idle (VR?) and hesistant to accelerate.... as though I'm mis-firing... Anyone got any ideas / things for me to check? - I cant get it on diags until Sat and that means no car till then if I cant fix it - couldnt do anything last night as was cold, dark and engine was red hot - from looking at exhaust its obvious the fuelling isnt right hence why suspect ignition problem! - I refuse to drive it like this for fear of causing harm! Cheers, Scott

You think Highways are bad? - wait until you need Axa Direct to pay out  ... took me three months of abusive letters to get anywhere - worst company I have ever used!

I cant recommend Walkden VW enough in Walkden, Manchester......... superb guys!
-
Well I have just let my mate have a go in mine and he has a 1998 Toyota Celica GT (174bhp)... and he was gob smacked by the difference in performance, handling and overall build - he admitted it was a much better car than he thought... yet it only has 16bhp more he said - little did he know *;)
-
Computer Analyst for a media and Telecommications company.... currently studying MCSE so that I can get into Networking and Database........ doing ok *:) Yeah its not a bad job - working in the heart of Manchester does have its benefits ....
-
Well its club day - you will be able to watch I imagine!
-
I wouldnt say 110deg C for oil is too high mate - on a high speed run I can usually see 116degC... Ive seen 126degC in summer in bad traffic... as long as your oil is in goo condition I wouldnt worry about it - a oil cooler is only really beneficial and worth the outlay if running mods I would have thought ?
-
You will have a lot of problems trying to get this stuff into 16V engine as if you disconnect any point of air path the engine will cut out....... *:) It needs to be applied with engine running and it isnt possible for engine to run if you upset air path.... even if turn the idle up! *:) Scott

Hi Chris, 30W RMS is adequate I feel for a car stereo system - heck I have a 30W RMS system at home in the bedroom and thats pretty loud! *:) LOL But I can hear the passenger side speaker distorting and the cone feels very stiff when you push it in gently so suspect that speaker is blown - hence why Im after new ones..... I think new speakers should be on the cards first then like you say an amp to drive the front ones... I have just been given a brand new pair of co-axial alpines - 6.5 inch.... how much hassle is that going to be to get them in the doors or am I better off scraping them and buying correctly sized speakers? - they were free so Im not bothered... Im not after massively loud - just enough so can crank it up from time to time without distortion!! *:) I cant spend too much either at moment *:( Scott
-
From what you proposing I would say its illegal - at least over here in the UK it would be .... as the MOT states you must be able to open the door from outside for a safety point of view - as in you had an accident and a fireman needed to get in to get you out.... how would they do that quickly and easily if you can only get the doors open with a fob ?
-
I agree with Roddy - I suspect you may have a problem there - sounds like the stat is stuck open possibly? As on a VR6 water temp should get up to 85-90 and stay around 85-95 under normal load driving.... when sitting it in traffic anything up to 110 is normal as the oil dumps its heat into the coolant so the water temps rise. As Roddy rightly points out the guage isnt that accurate anyway as when plugging in VAGCOM it says 100degC is about 95 ish *:) - so its not always running as hot as it may seem. I'd change the stat and whilst at it flush the coolant out and back flush the rad to clear all the dirt out.... but yes would replace the stat housing when doing it as they usually break - if it doesnt you can guarntee it will start leaking *:) An undercooled engine on a VR6 is not a good thing - most VW engines are designed to run quite hot... more important is oil temps though.. I'd want to see 90degC on the oil temp guage within 10 mins from cold start else I'd be worried.... Cheers, Scott

Optimax or Super Plus unleaded can push BHP figures up a little bit anyway.... on some cars that can advance the timing via ECU... ie. VR6... Ive always used Wynns or STP and have had good results with them but seeing as I only run on optimax these days I cant see any fuel cleaners being better than the petrol optimax? Might give this hot shots a go though... where do you get it from ?
