http://www.kompressorkanada.ca/pages/vw ... ldkits.htm Just found it mate. I honestly didnt realise that kit would be so dear....... So if I'm still insistent about rebuilding my own Darren..... Can you recommend me a place to get a kit from? PM me if you prefer.... Thanks John

Mate that sound an awful lot of cash. My mate has just bought a kit from holland for £150 sheets.... However if we are going into quality talk I'm not sure what level its on...
-
Yea I'm sure they may have.... But then, if I re-built the head or bottom end of an engine wrong, I would mess it up. Me and a mate are fairly intent on doing it ourselves thats all. It's an intrest afterall. I spoke to Darren about it at Ed38, and it does seem that there are varying qualities/makes of bearings. i'm sure Darren said it was G-werks/KK/and SLS that only have the best rebuild kits. I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong though. How was it only £100 more to send it to Darren then? Was the rebuild kit £270?? Basing that on the listed price of £370 for a standard re-build.

Well how much did you pay for your kit mate? and where from? I've been a VAG techy for 4 and a half yrs now and have some mates that have had a good one and a f***ed one in bits. Its no different to having anything else mechanical apart and putting it back together...... Here's a question for you then... Would you strip and rebuild the air-con pumps ?? I think the reason there is not a full guide on the net anywhere is because no two rebuilders use the same "step by step" ways of building them. Its like anything one person does regulary, they adapt there own method of doing somthing. As the servicing was not reconised by VAG in any schedule's there are no "techie guides" from vag. 2-3 dealers are even sending them to g-werks now as they have seen the problems unserviced chrgers can cause and the new £2000+ price of a replacment from vw. True.. No I probably wouldnt, but then it is not really known as a "rebuild-able" item is it?! And if was there would be someone that would know how to do. And no there are no VAG workshop manuals that cover re-building a charger. But..... How did you learn to re-build them Darren? By doing it yourself, with help from others that had done before.... It's like anything.......

My mate has just bought an S2 Avant for less than £4k with an RS2 turbo and intercooler on it.... Believed to be 330 brake! It goes like f***! Although is really laggy til about 4k rpm. I've driven a couple standard coupes too... Even they go like stink. All i will say though is, in my experience, Audi = bloody expensive parts, and normally everything you touch is a nightmare to do. I've worked on them a fair bit and always seemed to have complications compared to a VW.
-
I fully intend to have a go at mine myself over the winter.... I've read up loads on it, and seen a couple in bits which helps... Being in the trade I really dont want to pay someone else to do something I'm probably perfectly capable of doing myself... I really suprised there isn't a full-on DIY rebuild thread somewhere on the net which details all the ins and outs..... It is only a mechanical object after all. Might have to do one when the time comes!

Well I guess thats a matter of opinion... But you only have to look at this very forum to see jusy how many people are doing it and enjoying it! Not to mention the rest of the VW scene and all the other car enthuisasts besides. We do it because we love it.... Right :!: :?:

Please do tell me more! That sounds like an awesome plan for a daily driver! How much is an LPG kit? About £500?
-
BS indeed, for sure.
-
Thats all well and good mate, but you WILL be ill when that goes bloody wrong........

# It wasn't them as i went there armed with service book etc.... When they called it up they only stamped the book for oil change etc... 1st owner must of added his own tick in the timing belt box...  One question though is .....In the service book there is a yes-no box, So if the work isn't carried out why the hell dont vag tick the NO box so that this kind of crap cant happen to other people... Maybe andy665 can answer this for us ? Yea, there is a YES and NO box. I always tick what has and hasn't been done. But have seen plenty of service books with blank boxes. The only way to be certain is to call the dealer and get them to check their history. What mileage is it mate? Bare in mind the last Cambelt interval update sheet I saw ( which incidently VW update once a month!!) says up to 120k for some of the 1.8t engines!! I've seen them go at under 60k -

Is there a problem with the tensioners on these bloody engines as your about the eighth person i have spoken to today who has had bad experiance with them.... mine was just a belt that hadn't been changed... if only they hadn't of lied this would never of happened... What year is the Passat mate? The early ones had a really crap tensioning damper set-up, with like a plastic link arm on it. They used this on early passats and A4's. BUT they have now all super-ceded over to the new style. Everybody always just changes the Cambelt and (tensioner) roller. The thing that actually holds the tension is the damper. If I am doing a belt and there is ANY sign of a leak or dampness around the top of the the damper I dont re-use it. Infact I recommend people to change the whole lot. Belt, tensioner (roller) tensioning damper, and water pump because they are crap as well. The vanes are plastic and always break. It's not cheap, but it's cheaper than a re-build. Not sure if you can get the dampers from GSF or somewhere, but they are about £60 odd quid retail form VAG IIRC. If i can help with anything else just shout. -

Shite.... Sorry to hear that mate. She is looking sweet too... I had a tensioner let go on me once shortly after I finished a Cambelt on a 1.8t Golf. Needless to say the garage had to foot the bill. Cost us £600 in cost parts :( And it sure aint funny lapping in all 20 new valves  Hope you can get it sorted though. Was looking forward to seeing it at E38 -
Get the front end of the Golf flatted and polished and if I've got time another lick of paint over the tailgate....... Oh and hopefully will have something rather rare to fit to the front of it..... Thats if it gets over from the states in time!!! 8) 8)

AGREE AGREE AGREE!! Ordered up some Greenstuff for my Golf G60. What a load of Sh1t!! Squeaked like hell even after I drove round like a fanny for 300miles to bed them in. They also produced so much dust it was worse than standards!! My dealer told me this was becasue they were "operating outside their heat range, You need Red stuff pads" THis is after I removed the pads greased the contact areas and replaced them, and fitted "anti-squeal shims" as the metal ones were sliding backward and contacting the disc where the glue had melted!!! So much for uprated pads.... I tested Greenstuff as part of a project at college and we had them up to 700 odd degrees with no problems at the time. Needless to say I am now on red stuff and although they stop fine, they squeak like hell and produce loads of dust!!! See pics of two days driving on Green Stuff pads... They are utter shite. Rant over :D
-
I thought the issue with them was related to too much boost? Its being pumped back into the intake rather than bled to atmosphere as VW intended..... Can anyone enlighten me further please?!
-
Exactly... If it is good for the Yanks why not for us :?: :?: :?:
-
I have to agree with you on this point mate. TOO true. I have been tempted to write about it on here on more than one occasion but don't know if its really the right thing to do :!: :?:

So far as i can see no-one has yet mentioned the Digifant ECU relay. Can't remember the no. of the top of my head but definitely worth checking.
