    ENGINE

You can't fit a turbo to a 1.8 16v or a turboed engine cheaply or easily sadly.
  2. Did you get turned down by any of them Steve? Bet they were't as nice looking as me...
  3. Karl, have you seen the charge cooler in the for sale section on here? It's a PWR unit like CrazyDave's, but a touch bigger... Edit, link added.
  4. You would want, I assume, the engine, gearbox, probably radiator, loom, cooling fans, different cooling pipework, fuel pumps, intake pipework, ecu, exhaust downpipes, and several little fiddly items that you won't realise till it's half in at 7.30 on a saturday night. Think the engines are costing around #£300 ffrom what I've heard recently.

    Gearbox Rebuild

yep, they are, the shift towers on the box change around 92 though. Good news! sounds like my dad's split screen 1954 Morris Minor  lol... I was scurrying home in 4th last night, and wondered if that would be the best way to do it, double declutching hadn't helped (mostly due to my technique) but surprisingly in she went.

    Gearbox Rebuild

Oh bother.... Maybe second hand is the way forward then :( Going to try swapping the gear lever and cables as there is some random play at the lever end, which may not be helping. Does anyone know if early and late cables and levers are the same? I have a full set from a 16v which I'll try on the vr. Interestingly, the best (least grindy) way to engage 5th at the moment is to hold the engine revs around the correct mark and push it in with no clutch, got to vary the revs to get the right spot, but it slips in fairly easily then.
  7. Yum yum... Pleased you've finally got another, and looking forward to the 'alterations' over the next few months. I really like his nipples. I'd have a set of them!

    Gearbox Rebuild

Yeah, I looked at pant's selection, but they are still second hand boxes, and could well fail in a few thousand miles too. Would appreciate the number. Need to get the valver back on the road before I can do anything with the vr though :(
  9. We started fiddling with it about 3, couldn't find the cause, phoned the aa to get it towed to my place, and he finally fixed it at 9... It's the corrado sticker on the boot that's done it.... Lovely car though...

    Gearbox Rebuild

Has anyone rebuilt their gearbox before? My 5th gear has finally pretty much given up the ghost, and I would like it back, the symtoms are that you have to push hard to get it into 5th, and now more often than not, it will kick the gear lever out, and grind badly. I believe this is a symptom of a knackered synchro. What would the rough cost of the parts for a rebuild be? I assume I'd want a full set of synchros and bearings, and possibly a new 5th gear.

    Vr6 crack pipe

there are 3 bolts in the side of the head, 2 long and one short, or the other way round... there is a guide to removing the thermostat housing on here, and tbh it's worth replacing with new, about £50 all in from the dealer as it has a habit of cracking and leaking...
  12. You would still be driving the front diff, so as you say you'd end up with unfortunate power losses. and you'd need a custom haldex controller. as no front drive would probably make it sad. :)
  13. The GSF units are OEM and around 1/2 the price I believe.

    Vr6 crack pipe

take the thermostat housing off the side of the head, undo the oil cooler water pipe and remove the end of the crack pipe from the waterpump.
  15. Not heard that 1 before. Interesting. And I don't think it's true, either. Anyone who designs a 4wd system where the wheels don't turn at the same speed wants to lose their job pretty sharpish. You'd chew tyres in no time, the car would buck and twitch while the transmission flexed .. The idea is that the front is pulling slightly, otherwise the back could potentially try to overtake. Besides, even on a system that is perfectly balanced, new tyres at one end and old ones at the other are going to create this sort of effect. On a road car that is capable of 150 mph the difference in gearing is going to be tiny to stop windup in the transmission.
  16. 4wd setups also never drive the wheels at the same speed, there is always a tiny difference, I believe the front wheels always rotate faster than the rears, this is where a lot of the loss comes from.
  17. Hmmmm. What's the plan Yan? This sounds interesting... Some sort of charge cooler assembly? AC coupling is just a live to the magnetic clutch, so shouln't be too hard to wire up, you could probably make some sort of piggyback system... Er, don't want to say ATM just running some silly ideas around in my head. The valve would be a ball (No sniggering Dinkle) type valve, need to be able to shut something off completely. Sorry to be criptic, just want to know if what I think might be possible is.. Cool. Should be interesting, whatever it is...

  19. Strange you should say that Lord Toad. I turned to my girlfriend about 15 seconds ago and said "jesus, hampster looks like my mum"!!! :) That is exactly what I was thinking (not your mum though, I've never met her), middlish aged woman. Maybe there were some side effects from the crash?
  20. Doesn't he look like a woman with that hair???
  21. I will tip it over and take a poke round it tonight mate. The pistons on the 2e are quite dished aren't they?
  22. They should be fine. The 2e pistons are slightly shorter as the combustion chamber is in the block rather than in the head as seen on the 16v. You should notice that at tdc the 2e pistons are slighty lower than those on the 9a. Admittedly I just made that up in my head, from things I may or may not have heard, so you might want to test it. Glad it's all looking good mate. have been really impressed with the engines I've stripped. VW certainly made the 4 cylinder units well.
