Steering rack is now cleaned up, fixed all the track rod issues and measured it all out so rack is central and the LHS track rod is to factory length. Put it back on subframe, i used jubliee clips on the smaller of the two boot clips, as its easier to be able to undo them and spin the boot straight if needed Cleaned up the ARB and given it some paint Also decided to scrape off aload of underseal as was only way to check the sills properly, took ages Luckily all the bits i'm doing is underneath and out of eye line when stood up Holey rusted metal batman! Will let photos do the talking as pc i'm on is so slow i'm about to smash it up ---------- Post added at 11:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:04 AM ---------- Glad i did this rust when i did, as most of it was unnoticable. Was only a 5p sized hole that made me look. Sills cleaned off, rather save these the most Missing some photos, pc being annoying, so here are the last, i will update at some point. I've ground rust with a grinder. Then used the 3 stage POR15 rust treatment, grey paint, will do another coat of POR15 in black, have sealed the seams with joint sealer, then got schutz to reapply once i can borrow a compressor. Also got new cavity waxes to apply on the inside of sill. Welding repair isn't the most pretty, but i'm just want it solid and rust free so i can drive it everyday and use it properly

Stainless Steel Front (slam) Panel and Headlight Screw Kit + others
Jim Bowen replied to daves16v's topic in Suppliers Forum
How much for ones to do all slam panel and both wings, I just bought the headlights screws from vw so don't need them. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2 -
The bit of metal where it fits to wing can be bent quite easily, took me ages to get mine off and could see how someone would be tempted to bend it to make removal easier. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2

Questions - Thing I just don't understand about VW's decisions
Jim Bowen replied to Portent's topic in General Car Chat
I reckon vw had a stock pile of holes to use up so put an extra one on every vr6 wheel. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2 -

Think I managed to get my rack central now, by measuring the spare rack and rods. Rack poked out 41mm each end of the rack body. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2

Sorting rust on mine at the moment, has ended up being quite a task finding all the rust, especially the bits underneath the underseal. Used a grinder for the first time and took it to the corrado. Im using the por15 range of rust treatment, then cavity treatment and a wax, and going to have a go with the schutz gun over that. Luckily all my rear end is fine, is the front on mine thats suffered. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2

Deffo going to take my rubber boots off again then. Bummer, but I want the car as correct as possible. I have spare track rods and was trying to think up a way of using them to work out lengths without exposing the ones I just fitted. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2

fitting a non adjustable steering column (how-to)
Jim Bowen replied to davidwort's topic in Drivetrain
Can't find the steering lock on gsf site :( Should I go to vw for the barrel? Does that mean a new key? Thanks for the help so far. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2 -
Could you count the turns from lock to lock, then go from full lock to half the number of turns. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2

Don't know where to start doing mine, have removed everything from the steering wheel to the road wheels, so have nothing at the moment lol. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2

I just bent my hub up doing what you are doing, and the cv joint, was an expensive hammer blow, but like shiny new parts. Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk 2

the hub is held in by the wheel bearing, i think that what you mean, i had mine pressed out by local garage, its destroys the bearing too (i think)
