  1. At the risk of upsetting a Mod, isn't the point of a 'discussion thread' to allow people to discuss? If not, wouldn't it be a 'statement of fact' thread? Whilst I don't agree with what everyone on here says, surely it's everyones right to be able to say it? I'll get my coat... i only said it because it was on the verge of becoming personal. of course I'm not saying dont post, but just be constructive thats all. its a fair point about the title though - there is a difficult choice between keeping a thread to useful info that people dont complain about having to trawl through, and giving a place for everyone to voice their opinion or comment but which isnt ultimately useful for someone looking for easy-to-find information.
  2. lets end the tit-for-tat comments please. the thread is very informal for a sticky-topic already without it becoming argumentative.
  3. yes, kind of as quoted before the exception being that the sliding caliper being a single piston was calculated as such as approx 2300 despite what they say above. as you say i cant see that it would be accurate to calculate it as double just because there are still 2 pads, the efficiency is clearly less or the difference with the larger brembos wouldnt be so great. unless its all down to disc size, and ignoring weight and heat dissipation then theoretically the 54 is just as good as the large brembo? i doubt it though!
  4. Andy, I have the full set of hoses from my VR from when I replaced them with Samcos. I have always hung onto them as a set as i thought i might need them for another project one day but at the same time, thats not likely at the moment. For me there's no point in having them if the set isnt complete but if you want the whole lot then I dont mind selling them, even though I know its only the 2 you need. I know your views on price from your other attempts and threads but if you think £50 for the whole lot as opposed to 2 is fair then let me know. My view on it would be that you could always sell them again if you get something better afterwards, or have the others as spares. Just an offer anyway.

    Sobering...

as far as i know the fines are dramatically higher for exceeding 30 mph above the speed limit. My friend was fined £500-600 with 5 points both times he got caught doing 90-something in 50 or 60 zones. as the_dude says, the only people i saw in that list that actually went to jail were those who were drunk or plainly endangering others. most/all of the other jail sentences were suspended, even above 150mph. to an extent that does show to me that there is a recognition of blatant but not downright criminal disregard for the law vs recklessly endangering others due to the inappropriateness of the road/conditions. personally I'm very much in the camp of speed appropriate to the conditions vs slavish adherence to blanket limits, although it is hard to argue against a 100mph limiter even when of that opinion.

any good? dont have one of the back i'm afraid
  7. yeah, its common, and often the more things you replace ironically the worse it can get as everything is tightened up. it can be over compensated for by camber adjustment but to an extent its probably better just to get used to it once you've done things that are worth doing anyway.
  8. just did the maths and the 4pots work out at about 16% more piston area actually so not sure its that and also hence why dave recommends them so much afaik (albeit with at least 312 if not 325mm discs..) and need 18" wheels so not really a go-er for corrados absolutely yes - i think the OP is closer with his poor pad or dodgy ABS theory or this tyre point tbh. poll250 have you checked your ABS on VAG-Com mate?

  10. Yeah, hardly a very tactful reaction? If you got a Christmas card from a mate on Facebook would you post up on your status how sh!t you thought it was for them and all of your mutual friends to see??
  11. I've never owned a console because I've never liked anything other than driving games and it never seemed worth it just for them, but i just watched the epic advert in the 5th Gear break on channel 5 and i now reallllly want a PS3 and GT5... :shocked!:
  12. yes, certainly will look to cover it if the temps stay as low as that David, it was really my first decent test to see what i would get in this weather. water temps were equivalent i think but wasnt concentrating on those so much. normally water sits spot on at 90.
  13. got out for the first good run in a while tonight and going about 100 on a clear bit of motorway, with temp of 1 degree on the MFA, oil was at 92-94 degrees. later on though, when temp had dropped to about -2 i was only seeing 82-84 driving slowly around town.
  14. ^^^^ agree with this, and i do that purely to make sure the tyres wear all the way down at roughly the same time rather than replace 2 tyres separately where you may not be able to get the same brand. i guess "better" is intended to stand for "more tread" with the logic being that its to deal with standing water where tread is clearly king. as you say, there cant be any assumption of new tyres being grippier tyres given the variation in compounds on the market. however, to base a practice on rare conditions of standing water seems fairly far-fetched to me.
  15. x10 - never heard of any kind of yellow VR?
  16. haha, i wouldnt necessarily blame the tyres for that :) a bit of over-enthusiasm and some off-line icy-wetness is how i prefer to look at it! its an expensive size in general unfortunately. as has been mentioned before 195/50/15 T1Rs are £30 vs £50, michelin exaltos are £55 vs £100 which is frankly criminal for such a minute size variation. i've got rainsport2s on at the moment and I would say they must have done at least 10k by now and are about 60% worn. that has been 80% motorway driving but they're a good tyre if a little soft in the sidewall. t1-rs are known to wear on the outer edge more noticeably than the centre but thats not to say they're not a good performer nonetheless.
  17. yes, you definitely notice the difference, they are pricier but inspire confidence in that you feel like you have a better put-together car
  18. If you've got 312s then surely swapping to 288s for the winter would be very easy though?
  19. its only tyre stretch wendy :) for example its the same as everybody who has 7.5in wide 17in wheels still uses 205s even though their wheels are an inch wider than speedlines but some valvers and G60 came with 195s on 6.5in wheels anyway so its no issue (and most 195 summer tyres are about 60% of the price too because its a much more common size)
