I spent hours trying to figure out a way of getting the Airbox onto the other side. In the end I concluded the easiest way to do it was to use a turbo!!

I knew the seals were gone (which often means guides too) as I was pouring so much oil into it I was wondering if it was a two stroke!! As Tony says, just find another stalk, surely it's not that hard?? -

It's an 8v pal, going strong after a head rebuild which was badly needed (valve guides and seals worn). I'm looking at swapping for a diesel soon though as doing 160 miles a day in it is hurting my wallet! I love it though, and it's been really reliable. I did try out a Jetex, but the big tailpipes were not for me, and it was a fair bit louder then standard so I sold it again. I also had rainsports on mine, they were good for UK wet weather. -
Nice work Kev, I've just (a couple of months ago) totally rewired my engine bay stripping out all the extra stuff I didn't need as i couldn't stand the mess in the engine bay, I always find it looks so daunting when you start with the millions of wires, but it's fine when you get into it....Probably a bit late, but you could make the engine looms fit the VW ECU, and then make a short conversion loom for your DTA (you'd have to find a knackered VW motronic ECU for the loom socket). A bit like car stereos have. My Airbox is on the LH side, it's fairly easy to mount, I still need to make a cold air feed to it though which is quite tricky.

Some old head units do make a slight popping sound when you turn them on. Well mine used to anyway!!
-
Nice write up and as others have said good skills Kev! Where did you get the cams from and when do you think it'll be finished? I might have to come up and see you one day, find out if they are worth the effort! Hope this doesn't get sold afterwards, 24V conversions have a nasty habit of making the owners fall out of love with the car!!

Oh I knew that Kev, i'm not very light !

You didn't read the link then mate! Actual headlight bulbs, not twinkly sidelight markers..

mine arrived too, thanks Matt for sorting it out. -
You probably just need to clean the filters out, these are behind the little hex bits screwed into the abs manifold block. They can be difficult to get out though...

On the rear beam, rather than space out the wheel, do it to the stub axle, this keeps the load of the wheel bearing to a minimum, and the wheel fits as normal.

I had a nightmare trying to quieten my Mk2 exhaust down, in the end I managed to get hold of an Ernst system which gave good results initially, but after 30k on the motorway it's sounding a little bit raspy again, but nowhere near as bad as it was. The worst sounding bit for me was the downpipe, the likes of bosal make them so thin that although they don't leak, they sound like they are leaking badly. -
^ what he said, and there is no waiting!

Scrap Yard! every time i go to one I take off all the little clips, hose clamps and loom guides plugs etc that i can find off the newer VW's. usually you get them dirt cheap too.

Just been skimming through your thread again Gareth and it's looking better than ever, keep up the good work! The plate is a nice touch.

I've loved mine for 4 years now...that's how long it's been off the road! So do you still have the flat spot? I just wondered as when I drove mine to the MOT station it had a bad flat spot, I'd put it down to the rear lambdas not in yet.
-
Any updates on this?
-
I just hand stitched around the little clips bits, you hardly see it if you use matching thread and it looks fine.

Nice steering wheel you have there. I like the idea of a tomtom, but what is the Tomtom app on the Iphone like? Just thinking that it might be a better solution for integration with the car, as you can then get it to mute when your phone rings, the directions talk over your music etc. Just a thought.

Recovering is just as easy as spraying and it's usually a better finish!
