that's the bugger... the thermostat sits inside it and then it (and it's O-ring) bolt onto the bottom of the waterpump. 8) Careful how you tighten it up... if you get it on at an angle it's quite easy to crack it.... :|

I think that the sunshine we had over the weekend has melted people's brains... :silly:  (no it's not just you... )

you could also then mess about with the scale of the Rallye and make it appear that the other car is about to hit it... or is that just my warped mind at work again?!?
-
Yeah, I waved at you as I was sat waiting for the muppet in front to move outta the way.... kinda gathered you weren't quite with it this morning!

is this a LHD or RHD car? The ABS system on the LHD golf is different from that on the RHD car...

could be... [/Hong Kong Phooey] It sure as hell ain't gonna hurt to change it anyway... ;)

Corrected timing, now lost 65% power and runs rough ideas?

G60 Bob, if it's eaten the woodruff key you'll need the toothed pulley from the crank which drives the cambelt 'cos the notch that the woodruff key sits in will be damaged. -
What bolts/parts are renowned to fail in G60 Engine?
Henny replied to juloesG60's topic in Engine Bay
the oil feed and return lines to the charger should be replaced every couple of years in my opinion... if one clogs up you're looking at a dead charger in a rather short length of time... :| Only other things that tend to go are the senders and sensors which go on just about every engine... 8) -
I've used Jabba in the past, and having seen the quality of their bearings and heard their policy on only replacing bearings "if they appear to need changing" rather than changing 'em all during the rebuild, I won't be going back to them... Any chargers I have done in the future will either be visiting Darren (G-man) at G-Werks or John (16VG60) at JMR... 8)

not really a 0-60 video though is it...

if it's your car and you're driving it, I don't see why not... 8)

8) odds are that one of the 4 drains are blocked as Kev suggests then...

nah, I've had several valvers in my time and have only ever changed the chain 'cos I was doing either a head gasket or a full set of tappets to quieten the engine down... Seemed stupid to put an old chain back in for the sake of less than £20... 8) I've never heard of one letting go, but I've heard a few that start to get a little noisy...

you sure it's leaking from the sunroof? make sure that the carpet at the front of the car isn't damp too... could be a missing grommet in the firewall, a blocked drain in the scuttle panel (where the windscreen wiper motor lives) or a leaking seal around the interior fan inlet... or maybe even a leaking heater matrix if your car is loosing coolant... :|

You should have said then  Only messing..... that wasn't aimed at you anyway, just adding to the thread in general. And the reply wasn't aimed at you either... Thought I'd better point out that I did it with maths rather than believing the MFA! ;)

Bob? I think you've got yourself a little confused... ;) On the crank there's a toothed gear which drives the cam belt. This has a notch in it for the woodruff key which sits in the groove in the crank end and provides the locating for that gear. It's this pulley that's held on by the BIG crank bolt which everyone is replacing at the moment due to them having a nasty (and sometimes expensive!) habbit of snapping off or coming loose... :| Onto the outside of that gear is the pulley which drives the belt for the alternator, waterpump and supercharger. This pulley has 4 bolts to hold it on which aren't equally spaced and so cannot be fitted the wrong way. This pulley has a raised dot on it which is the timing mark. Onto the outside of that pulley, you bolt on the pulley which drives the P/S pump which also has a dirty great big weighted damper on it... 8) Hope that makes slightly more sense now... 8) Just FYI, the woodruff key is about 80p from VAG, the bottom cam belt/crank pulley is about £15, the bottom charger/alternator/waterpump pulley is about £30 and I have no idea how much the P/S pulley and weight is, but it's probably gonna be expensive 'cos the weight is BIG!  -
erm, that WAS averaged from fuel consumption, NOT what the MFA said... 8) (although I'll agree, my MFA wasn't a mile out - it was about 0.4 out! ;) )
-
Baz2004, There's 3 belts on a 1.8 16V working from the engine out: 1) Cambelt 2) Alternator belt (also does waterpump) 3) P/S pump There isn't a "fan belt" as such 'cos the fan is electric... ;) 8)

Averaged 34.8mpg on the round trip to Summer nights last night... Congleton to York Via the A34, M60, M62, A1/M and 2 service stations, then York to Skipton for a pub dinner and back to Congleton via a breathaliser stop  the M65 and the M6... Not bad really considering I managed to average 56mph at the end of the day 3:45 travelling and 260ish miles... Reckon I can probably legitimately get it up into the low 40mpgs if I take it nice and steady... 8) (and no, she's not running lean, she's spot on... )

yup, the membrane is the thin plastic sheet which is behind the door card. Don't use a standard bin bag as they're not thick enough and will tear too easily, go to B&Q (or similar) and get a plastic rubble bag which is much thicker. Also buy some good quality Gaffa tape (DUCK tape is pretty good). Cut the bag in half so you're left with a single sheet, cut that to shape and then gaffa tape it onto the door. Job done... 8) Door cards are easy to get off. Which interior do you have on your car, round heater dials or slide heater controls?

sunroof seal is available from GPC - http://www.gpcvwaudi.com Yup, it sounds very much like your door membranes have holes in from your description...

The woodruff key is a semi-circular chunk of steel which fits into a keyway in (groove cut into) the crankshaft. This acts as a locating lug for the crankshafts cam pulley so that it'll only go on one way meaning that the timing mark (the raised dot) can only point the correct way. If the woodruff key had been chewed up then you'll have to replace the key, the pulley and in extreme cases the crankshaft too... :| Things that normally make the cambelt be a tooth out are: 1) Someone not putting it on properly ( never done that, honest guv ;) ) 2) Tensioner not done up properly allowing the cam belt to be too slack 3) Cam belt stretching due to being either cheap and nasty, or too old. 4) Frequent BUMP starting of the car (causes a JOLT on the engine which can cause the belt to jump a tooth) Worn pulleys can also be a cause, but I've yet to see that on a VW engine... 8) -
Tee Hee!! Local Yoof Burn down Speed camera near me!
Henny replied to rado-steve's topic in General Car Chat
someone's just done every camera on the A34 from Congleton all the way upto Manchester with a black spray can... can't take photos if they can't see out of the casing! ;) I'm not condoning it, but at least it won't cost as much for them to fix as burning one down... :| -
VEEDUBBED, I'm not saying you can't run 84mm pistons in an 81mm uno block or other engines... I'm saying you CAN'T use 84mm pistons in a G60 block! There are oilways VERY close to the linings of the cylinders in the G60 engine... in fact, one of them actually goes through the liner at the bottom where the oil squirter which cools the bottom of the piston crown comes through! The FACT is that you CAN overbore the block to 84mm without hitting any oilways and waterways, BUT as soon as you use the engine in anger with any level of boost the cylinder walls WILL crack (normally between 2 and 3)
