    VW Bora V5

Well it's my brother who is selling his. It's a W-reg with about 70,000 on the clock. full vw service history and all the mod cons except leather. Main reason I'm thinking about buying it is that I got a bit of a promotion on monday which is good :D but it means I'm now going to be changing my driving habits from about 50 miles a week to about 200 which is bad :( Not really worried about fuel costs as work will be paying my mileage, just thinking that my Corrado isn't ideal to be out on the road all the time, carrying loads of client books/records on lowered suspension and generally driving a 13 year old car day in day out when I already keep having constant maintenance as it is. Just don't really want something that is completely boring after the C (not that I really want the C to go!), and as Karl has already mentioned it won't be staying N/A for very long!
  2. Anyone had any experience with the Bora V5? What's it like to drive/run/mod etc etc? Might have the opportunity to buy one and really tempted. Only down side is the C would hav to go.... :( There is loads of factor about whether I should buy it or not but want a bit of honest opinions first on the V5, not necessarily in comparison to the Corrado but just in general.

    Engine paint??

I've got some Dulux at home if you want it mate??
  4. Ok have now updated my earlier post with the part numbers needed. If buying the sensors you'll need to double check with VW as there is a sight difference if you've got a car with aircon, other than that the rest should be ok.
  5. Poor cap. The ones from VW (blue and about £4) have a pressure release valve to stop them blowing. If replacing everything you should have new: 021 121 117A - Main housing, 021 121 133D - front housing elbow, 021 121 121A - thermostat elbow, b 075 121 113D - thermostat & seal (should come together from VW), b 025 906 041A - Blue b701 919 369D - Yellow and b357 919 369F - Black sensors, 3 x N903 168 02 - small O-rings that go with the sensors, 2 x N101 392 01 - slightly larger O-rings to go on the crack (drainage) pipe and the front housing elbow, 1 x 021 121 119A - odd shaped seal (kind of rectangle) that is for between the main housing and the block. Sound right? If anyone is near Cambridge and needs a hand doing this I'm more than happy to help out.
  6. I agree, thermo housing or a seal. Squeeze the top rad hose and watch for any liquid leaking from around the housing. The housing is only one part so if thats what you asked for from VW it might be right. The other piece that everyone goes on about is a thermostat elbow and should only be a couple of quid, if it needs changing. Not heard about the R32 thermostat but i'd be interested to see if its a good mod? As for the taking ages to warm up, I#m afraid that is just a trait of the VR6. They all do it, and they all get warm when stuck in traffic. Its when it doesn't return to normal when you're up and moving again that you want to worry.
  7. What type of ducting did you used in the end to go from the charger to the MAF sensor in the opposite wing? Was it that flexi fabric stuff? If so I just thinking how air tight it might be as somebody has already mentioned it might not be the most water resistant, my thought being that it could be drawing in unmetered air into the charger if its not quite sealed? (does that make any sense?)
  8. I'll dig them out for you and post them up
  9. Hi Neil, you don't say what model you've got? But anyway I'd be tempted to change the thermostat housing (especially the main parts) as these could now be over 12 years old at least, are are made of fairly rubbish plastics, obviously getting all new seals. As for the sensors, I could be worth doing your blue temp sensor as if this goes it can have a big effect on your fuelling and running. As for the other sensors, its all down to whether you think they are working ok at the moment? Thermostat is usually worth doing but some people have complained recently that the ones from VW don't open as far as they used to and therefore can cause over heating, but the other side of this is that if you use a low temp one from somewhere like Awesome you might find it can run a little too cold. Especially the VR6. I never changed my thermostat when I did my housing because I never had (and still haven't) any overheating issues so thought i'd stick with the one I had. As you buying the parts to make sure your mechanic fits them, well I hate to be the sceptic but unless you actually get in there and do the job yourself you can never guarantee that they've used the parts you've given them...... but maybe this is just based on my own experiences with some garages.
  10. Looking good Rob, I'm half tempted to make the trip over to your place today myself! Unfortunately, due to the high intake of alcohol that was forced upon me last night I'm not feelingsafe to be out on the public roads! :pukeright: If I'm feeling better later i'll give you a call, unless someone (Mr Deviant??) wants to pick me up on the way through???
  11. quick q Rob, what kind of torque figures to hoping for?
  12. Haha, live and learn I guess. It all fits now and thats what matters, plus I guess you got them cheaper than buying them from storm? Is there any other jobs you're thinking about whilst the front of the car's off?
  13. nice bit of progress there Rob, and glad to see you looking at getting all the other potential faults sorted at the same time. The 100% last thing you'd have wanted is to slap the charger on and then the water pump fail and eating up all your good work. Can't wait to see it running!
  14. Er.... I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make it if thats your idea of a conversion!
  15. Hi Rob, can I be really cheeky and pop over to see the install as well. I'd be interested to see how hard the install is, along with seeing Karl and Daves installs. If they don't mind obviously? :D Mic
  16. Ok I've spoken (Calmly!) to the guys who did the alignment about the fact it still appears to be pulling to the left (noticed last night that it is a lot more noticable under acceleration) and they are going to have another look at it for me on saturday. They are also going to try to dig out the camber and alignment readings for before and after as well. Didn't even mention the whole charges thing, i'll enjoy that chat face to face! Cheers for all the help guys and I'll let you know what they find.

    Exhaust Mounts

I've been thinking of uprated exhaust mounts for my VR6. Would these bobbins be suitable and where would I get some from?
  18. cheers for the advice guys, It does sound like I've been had TBH so I guess I'll get back down that shop and demand they get it sorted, plus I want them to explain their pricing in relation to the work done. If needs be I'll get some quotes from other companies and see if they can explain why they're so much more expensive (doubt they'll give me any of it back though!) Andy - don't really want to say who they are on an open forum until I've spoken to them again and given them a chance to sort it. I've seen it before on forums where it only needs to be pointed out to the owners of the garage and all hell breaks lose! Anyone got any idea what the standard camber settings are on the VR6? Ever since I've owned the car the front wheels have had that negative (bottom of the wheels out /-\) camber look and it's still the same now. Is that normal as I'd just assumed it was?
  19. Having changed my standard suspension for some weitec ultras myself at the weekend I got all the tracking/camber and alignment checked yesterday to make sure it was all good. But I took it for a test drive last night and it still appears to be pulling to the left but i'm not sure what they have actually done to it so I'm hoping someone on here will know if I breakdown my invoice, and hopefully be able to explain it to me because it was not cheap and I'm a little worried I've been had! :( Basically my invoice lists the work as follows: TRAAA - Front Toe Adjustment - £60.14 TRACHECK - Check only no adjustment - £40.43 :? TRAREAR - Alignment Adjust rear toe - £40.43 Total invoice - £141.00! So does anyone know what all this means? Have I been done/should I go back and kick up a fuss? Cheers guys Mic
  20. Ahh you're making me blush! Well a bit more work done on the car this weekend as I couldn't get along to E38. Basically went from this To this! And also fitted some clear side repeaters. Suspension is a set of Weitec Ultra GT's (shocks & springs) with a drop of about 40mm all round, all kindly provided by Marcus. Fitted in part in a friends workshop although had to finish off on my parents drive as it took a fair bit longer than I expected, but fairly lucky as had no problems with rounded bolts or the such like. Only main problem was the fact that it was too low to get off of the parents drive after it was lowered without a good old scrape of the front spoiler..... maybe time to source a 50mm one! The old springs looked in really good order but the shocks and the rubber mounting were all pretty much shag**d, but replaced with VW parts all round along with all new bolts etc so should be good for a few thousand miles yet. Just need to get the tracking done now then I'll let you all know how it drives and maybe get some more pics up as well.
  21. Wow, good progress there mate. Looks like you've been working hard to get it sorted. For the flywheel bolts you need to lock it in position, you can get a tool specifically for the job but I'm sure someone will tell you an ''on the fly'' way of doing it!
  22. who is that handsome helper you've got there?!!! We got loads done, really impressed that it all come out without a hitch. Shows its been looked after by you and the previous owners. Can't wait to see the next stage of the project now!
  23. OI! Join the queue... Don't worry I've done some recon and it's a double garage. As long as we get rid of all Stu's stuff we can both get in there!!! Stu, ready for some serious work tomorrow??
  24. You won't be losing interest Stu, I won't let ya!!! Need to get Mrs Badcrumble sorted so I can finally get my car in your garage...... :D
  25. nice one Rob, but Jon's right. Better start developing your own ESP as those early polo's (mk1 to mk3) are a nightmare when braking. Useful mods for them I'd say are mk2 golf gti 8v front brakes, G60 steelies! and if you want a good engine conversion get yourself a 1.4 from a seat ibiza and an 8P gearbox with the longer 5th gear ratio! Well done chief! 8)
