  1. The ABS controller should be smart enough to auto-range for new or old sensors on a per-sensor basis, I'd be surprised if there was an interaction like you're suggesting, GIXXERUK. I could be wrong, maybe it used to be true on the early systems tho...
  2. Ah - could also be water getting into the car and into the ABS control unit. See if you've got any dampness in the carpet in the passenger footwell, near the front of the door.
  3. Says a lot for the quality of their MOT inspection, doesn't it! :)
  4. They are supposed to check that the lamp lights on startup, then goes out a few seconds later. If they don't notice that, then they're really a bit clueless.. And yes, the ABS being faulty is an automatic MOT fail.
  5. No. The G60 also doesn't remember the error codes when you turn the ignition off, but if you get it VAG-COM scanned while the light is on, you'll find what you need to know.
  6. If the light is on, the ABS does not operate. That's what it says in the manual, anyway. The most common reason for ABS faults is dodgy front wheel sensors, but you need VAGCOM to read which one (unless you can test them all yourself). The VR6 has a traction control circuit too - and if this fails, the system shouldn't disable the ABS completely, as it's not a safety related fault.
  7. Bad translation. The guy's german. They use "Optik" to mean "appearance", so this should really be translated to something like "..for everyone into car modification."..
  8. What the feck have you lot been drinking tonight? Jeez...
  9. Give it time. You'll look back on your first year of FTO ownership and suddenly realise you were only fleeced once, for oil and filter!!! It'll be a culture shock! You will stop the sleep-walking into the garage and forlornly gazing at your lovely tool kit, and wondering when you're ever going to need to use it again. There is life after Corrado... ;)
  10. And what was the first draft of that like? "He, Civic Type Rs get chewed by my exhaust fumes on a daily basis, GET WIV DA PROGRAM"? And where's the "Hey I would drive a Civic Type R, but I'd have to keep reminding myself NOT to put the LAWNMOWER into it after cutting the grass!!!"
  11. I thought this thread was supposed to be a reference sticky, not a discussion thread? Clarification here, mods?
  12. Oh jeezus does this mean there will be a memorial puddle fountain to the Corrado, and Elton bloody John will dust off something he thought he'd never manage to make any MORE money off and re-record it...???! :gag:
  13. There's always room in this world for the rich schizophrenic. ;)
  14. Surely that means 4.5 yrs no claims per policy then..! :)
  15. Dealers often own franchises from multiple different car companies. The Ad was probably shot in germany, hence the german plate. Possible?

Yep - you can buy a basic cable for £35; the freeware VAG-COM is enough to read and erase error codes, so all you need is a laptop (or a loooooong cable..).

Short experiment outside: started the VR, running fine. Unplug MAF: no noticeable difference ... Hit throttle - engine bogs down, splutters, and then revs.. this is repeatable four, five times, consistently repeatable. The car has never done this before! Plug MAF back in: engine revs drop VERY slightly (engine is still on warm-up cycle anyway) Now hit throttle - engine revs cleanly every time you press the throttle. So - is the MAF working or not?
  18. This car was CHEAP though. Amazingly so. It was a 4-door reasonable sized saloon with a decent boot, a 2.0 4 cylinder engine, an auto box, cruise control, air con and a CD player. The RRP? $13000 CAN - around £6k. Plus it comes with a 10 year/100,000 mile drivetrain warranty. You can see why the rental companies buy them.
  19. I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer presented in my .sig .. ;)

Is the inlet air temp monitoring done on the MAF too, btw? I know it is in later ones, but not sure..
  21. That was it - the "Dodge Blancmange". That what it said on the boot lid, anyway.

Weird thing is the mode of failure - surely if the ECU was ignoring the MAF it would throw a fault code? Empirical evidence seems to suggest otherwise, but it's stoopid. grrr But it would explain why my VR does so poorly in fuel economy compared to some..

Then there's a lot of dodgy MAFs out there... * * - that don't show up as faulty on VAGCOM.
  24. Hey, dinkus, those roads winding their way up into the Rockies ARE fun.. But unfortunately the hire car was a Dodge, so they weren't as much fun as they could be. I did see hordes of Pikmin at the side of the roads though, which I was a little surprised about..

Could also be your throttle position sensor, by the way. You really need to get VAG-COM to take a look if there's any error codes reported.
