Doing an oil change...confusion over which oil.

Got some Mobile 1 5W/40 today, ended up getting 70 litres for just less than €70 (£54.47). Whats the difference between this and some normal bog standard 10w/40? The '10' relates to the thickness when hot, right? The '40' relates to the thickness when cold?! :gag: -

Not back in the UK, still hanging out with zeee Germans. I can't order GSF stuff over here, but I might have a look for this Fuch's stuff tomorrow at the usual places over here. The Germans have some proper random types of oil from when I last had a brief look. -
Hi chaps, Either tomorrow or Sunday I'm going to be doing an oil change on the Corrado, I've got some engine flush stuff to whack in the engine before hand...and now there is the oil choice. Firstly I was going to chuck in any old Castrol 10/40 stuff, however on the Castrol website it recommends Castrol 'Edge' 5/30, but surely thats too thin? I've also had Castrol 'Edge' Sport 10/60, recommended to me personally, but its TWICE the price of the normal stuff, am I really going to notice the difference? Its it going to help my engine TWICE as much as any 'normal' Castrol stuff? I tried the Volkswagen dealership, but they don't do the Silver Synta (sp??) stuff that I normally used in my Mk1/Mk2 Golfs. Any help and I'd be grateful chaps.

I can't believe no-one's mentioned a Renault 5 GT Turbo (Phase II)! :shock: They are much more fun to drive than a Corrado and far better handling, in fact I'd still have mine if it wasn't so expensive to run and and as reliable as the Corrado...but we're talking about 'most fun motoring' :clap:

Sorry for the late reply, no photos as my internet at home is down... Anyway, the kit itself came quickly and included all the drill bits, tap, and screws etc that I required. The instructions were fairly easy to follow, even for a techincal dumbass like myself. The most annoying part was using a phillips screwdriver to seperate the two bits of large plastic that comprises the handbrake cover from the gearstick to the rear seats! Now I've got the brakcet on, it doesn't budge/squeak at all, as it probably did when it was new! A good, quickish fix and fairly cheap kit as well. Recommended.

Don't suppose anyone's got the list of parts I need? Dont really need part numbers, but if I walk into VW with a complete list of parts (top mounts, bolts, bumpstops etc) that WONT be in the kit then at least I won't get my pants pulled down. Cheers! -

I like DetailingWorld for a few tips/help when it comes to cleaning cars and stuff, but this is going too far if you ask me, the chap clearly has issues or OCD at the very least. You wonder how their wives/girlfriends (dare I say boyfriends?!) cope?! I assume that a lot of these gentlemen live at home with their parents and will do so for a while. Cleaning their cars is probably the only fresh air they get...

Woah, I bet this looks really, really cool. Whats the score on getting my whole interior done (bar the heater controls which seem to be a problem)? I live in Germany, so would it be a case of posting you a switch a week-at-a-time (for example) and then simply placing it back into my dashboard once you had converted it to a blue LED and posted it back to me?! Or another approach, I'm back in Cambridge (not too far away from Surrey) late December, how much to do the whole interior in a oner? (t'internet isn't working at home, so apologies in advance if its not a speedy reply) -
As above really chaps...think I'm going to go for the Weitec Ultra GT suspension (not coilovers) and I was wondering if anyone has it fitted to their VR6? If so what do they think, or do they have an informed opinion about someone else's car with this suspension fitted? :confused4: Also, if I'm buying this 'kit' (about £270ish last time I checked) is there anything else that doesn't cost bucks that I should also replace at the same time? Top mounts, wheel bearings etc etc Cheers!

Had all 4 calipers removed and cleaned up (brakes were speaking and driving me crazy) and then had the thermostat housing replaced and the slight coolant leak fixed, think a couple of pipes too and that was about €300/£230 and then I'm having the brake bias replaced (as its proper dead), but they couldn't remove it the first time, so they are having to drop the rear axel, replace the brake bias, and replace both big bushes at either end of the axel while they are at it too (I'm told they're quite expensive) and obviously its a lot of labour and that particualr job is being quoted at €580/£460 and being done Oct 2nd. Hopefully the car will pass the upcoming TUV/MOT it has in November!!!

To reiterate my earlier point about the Corrado being expensive, I've just got another rather large bill of €950+ (about £750 in real money), think I've spent a couple of G this year on the up-keep of my beast.

Hmmm...not the most helpful comment. Anyway, as for TCS, I bought my VR6 from them back in September last year for over £5000, ok, he might not have the complete know-all-geek knowledge of some of the chaps on here, but he knows the Corrado sells, he has a fair few there for me to choose from, including a Campagin model (ona CAT-D) he doesn't love them all that much - he is a buyer/seller of cars, its his business, so what if he doesn't know all the ins and outs of the car?! He must be doing alright, it was the first time I went anywhere Derby and his house is alright and he drives a Ferrari 355, so he must be doing something right? Plus, I've sold a few cars in my time and, for example, when I was selling on a completely mint 53,000 mile late example of a Renault 5 GT Turbo (Phase II) I got sick and tired of the stupid questions I got asked over the phone/e-mail/text and people trying to drive like idiots on a test drive, so I can smpathise (sp?!) with the chap. Rather than talking about this chap - if your in the market for a Corrado - why don't people actually go and visit him and the cars he has to offer and make your own minds up? If you don't want to buy what he has on offer - then don't!

Car's getting some work done at Volkswagen on 2nd October, reckon its worth mentioning it to them? Whatever the transponder loop is, if it needs replacing it could be expensive?! Don't want to be spammed with another massive bill.

Hello chaps, Every now and again my 1995 VR6 does an odd thing while starting up, I turn the key and the car starts first time as per usual and then it will cut out suddenly as if its stalled. No juddering or dodgy idle, it just stops. Its only done this a few times and its been weeks since it last did it this morning. Left it for a few mins and returned to the car and it started fine again. Any ideas? Is there something I need to clean/replace?! I'm a bit stuck on this guys, so I'd be grateful for any help. Cheers.

Ya, I should have explained it a bit better, the brakes have been squeaking and driving me crazy, plus they've been a tad spongy (pads/discs are fine). So now the pedal feel is good again, plus they are not squeaking and they've been cleaned. Also the fuel filter is doing, what ever it does... Anyway, it came to €144 (£115) all in, which I'm pleased about. They've pointed out some work that also needed doing, so I'm glad I took it to the dealership, and they are doing the other work tomorrow morning (brake bias, thermostat housing etc etc etc). The total bill comes to €585 (about £460) including all the things they're replacing and the labour. I realise that there must be lots of engine/drivetrain/mechanical/technical buffs on here - but I'm certainly not one of them. While I'm happy to hang out and fiddle and mess about with the car with mates/contacts in the UK that do know what they're doing...over here I'm far too busy and I don't have the contacts/time/tools/patience/knowledge to carry such things out, so I'd rather pay some uber-effective German professional to carry out the work for me, especially at the far more reasonable labour rate of €65-69 per hour (about £50-55).

They are expensive (in VR6 form) in my own experience, but I think its worth it. Awesome car, awesome reliability (bar the sunroof!) and obviously very good performance and handling.
