I like them on some cars, mk1 golfs all retro'd up with a roof-rack suit a nice bra without question, I'm just not sure it looks at home on a corrado as a 'style' item. Fair play to Garath though, if my car was as mint as his i'd be protecting the front end from flying grit during the winter.

sorry, another buying advice thread! I'm looking at a mk3 golf Tdi with the 110bhp 1.9 engine in CL guise. I've never owned or looked at a diesel before and obviously the engines are quite different to their petrol counterparts so... what do I specifically need to look out for? is the engine likely to be smokey just by nature of being an oil burner? I know Jim's said his Tdi smokes if he boots it... anything else I should be wary of? I should be fine with the rest of the car, its just the specifics of a good/bad/knackered diesel engine I'm wanting to know about! ta!

cheers for the tips guys, turns out the 1.8t he wanted to look at was a previous cat-d, it said so in the autotrader advert but my mate didnt know what it meant! tagged along with him today to look at some others since he decided to leave it and he ended up buying a very nice P-reg silver 1.6, 77k, clean as a whistle save for a couple of bits of interior trim coming loose and a squeaky cam belt which went after 5mins of the engine running, so I dont think its anything to worry about although I advised him to get it changed ASAP. he paid £3200 for it which I think is a cracking deal!

 thats rubbing salt in the wound a bit isnt it?

i doubt theres much you can do about the fine, what is it they say? ignorance is no excuse! (something like that!) fair do's if you didnt see the sign but not seeing it doesnt mean you can get out of the fine. 3 routine checks in a night is a bit OTT though!

tunability isnt really an issue, my mates not really into modding his cars. All the other stuff's good though, I'll be able to look like I know what I'm talking about! :D

right, so not from the block itself? I was thinking head gasket failure!

coming from the block itself? ooo dear...

no, not for me! I'm going with a mate to look at a couple to replace his cooper S which has been nothing but trouble since he got it and has finally gone back to BMW to be melted down ;) I told him the mk4 golf was better but he likes the idea of the audi badge, and hes not a frantic driver (dispite the cooper S) so the softness of the bushes wont really bother him. any tips/advice on what to look for when viewing one? are there any major problems, recalls, common faults, imporant service points etc etc? cheers chaps!

its the hasstle though mate, if i buy it back its not technically road-worthy since its been catagorised as cat-d but not inspected since, which would mean trailer only collection plus the hasstle of me getting it from the salvage yard back home... i've got too much going on at the moment to take this on as well! -

bix - I'll make it public where it can be salvaged from, if anyones super seriously interested I'll PM the number of the salvage people and let them know as soon as its picked up! tatty(er) alloys on the way thanks to H8RRA! -

yup... just think, with say, £1000 invested in getting the bodywork mint, £1200 in coxys engine (if it wasnt sold)! someone could have had a 24v vr-based corrado for £2900 AND have a reasonable 12v engine to sell on. must admit i thought about it, but I dont have the time, space, skills, tools... and so on! -

paul - no worries mate .rich. - yeah mate, keeping the cups for the next motor if i get one and if they'll fit, if not they'll be sold... sadly a bit scuffed now but should still be tidyable. -

realistically, if some enterprising local wanted to pick it up, they offered it to me for £700 'scrap'. engines fine, just dented bodywork. could be back on the road for less than a grands worth of repairs... i just dont need the hasstle of sorting that out at the moment. -

i think they might have something to say if i gave it back with no seats  I cant go so far as breaking it for salvage, just take some things off they wont notice, oh and its cloth anyway ;) -

so long as it has 'alloys' the engineer said he'll be happy, so i'm trying to sort that out at the moment, audio stuff will all come out as will any other aftermarket bits I can replace for nowt. other than that I dont think theres much I can do without them cutting the payout down. -

just been sorting my car out, wasnt happy with the way the engineer was talking about the repairs being 'tight' with the budget he had to play with, and the garage 'having a go' at the reapirs, so asked him to write it off since I'd have to sell it anyway due to loss of no claims, and selling a cowboy repaired car just isnt going to be fun. I've got til monday to strip it of anything worth anything and then it goes for salvage. getting £2750 back from it, plus whatever i can get for the bits I pull off. very very sad, but its the best move rather than trying to get it repaired for sentimental reasons, then selling it on for what equates to about the same money as i'm getting. head rules heart this time, but heart isnt happy :'( -
and they say computer games dont influence todays youth... i blame streetfighter 2.

I think people were just hankering to hear the engine in this case mate, i know i was! music can work really well in videos, theres a guy on here somewhere (either red=fast or too hot, dont remember which! think hes californian??) who's done some well smart videos which are all dubbed over with music and still look really sweet. maybe its the content of the video that makes you want to hear the engine roaring away? probably a mix of dubbed and original soundtracks would do the trick. theres something about seeing a car in primer, missing the hood and trunk, but with a superb engine, blatting along in the dark... dont touch the bodywork and you'll have the ultimate sleeper! :D

Ultimate Car In Your Price Range (ish)
chrishill replied to biggerbigneil's topic in General Car Chat
thats amazingly sexy! for 8k? in my price range, other than the corrado...er... not much! mk1 golf in mint condition probably, campervan or original beetle possibly. Just on a retro vibe at the moment for some reason! -
just watched the 2nd video... that rocks! the end bits even better with the engines providing the tunes :) whats the specs on the camera car? obviously another rado, sounds pretty good itself!
-
is it just me or do the paint colours for the corrado remind anyone else of the name of the teraforming colony type place in Aliens?

vwfastg60, there was a guy offering some very nice looking polished steering wheel hubs on here a while ago, i dont remember his username though... I've a feeling he was making them himself and was actually based on your side of the pond.... er used the search and it was RS VR6! :? http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24415&highlight=polished+hub
