  1. thanks that is very helpful so, about £140 for 288 refurb, plus £40 ish for the calipers themselves goodridge hoses at £114 best part of £300 & still need discs & pads do people normally sell the carriers & any bolts needed with the 288 calipers?
  2. very understandable sentiment Jim & sensible too i just simply wouldnt be able to outlay anything like that - it is not far off what my mortgage repayment is lol
  3. whoa!!! that is some outlay - £3666 per year or £305 per month reaffirms why i dont look at new cars as i would never afford that lol
  4. looking at purple toms old sale thread he was selling the 288 calipers for £40
  5. i see - now that makes much more sense if you already have parts
  6. i appreciate your thoughts thanks Dox a question if i may - what would make you choose the 288 route over the hispec route? i would imagine that once a refurb cost to refresh the 288 calipers was added to the other parts it would push the total to near the hispec cost for brand new kit also the stated 'popular choice' on the billet 4 have 38mm pistons - does anyone know the 288 piston size?
  7. quality & budget are always a determining factor ive checked the wiki & unfortunately nothing about 288's - also struggling to find a decent thread in drivetrain section however, there is a 312 setup estimation - which without pads is already at £350
  8. i understand your point but to go to 288's will need all of the other parts replacing too, not just calipers & they would be used & of unknown quality once ive added all the discs, pads, carriers, bolts, hoses etc the total cost could be very close has anyone got a ball park figure to go to 288's?
  9. lol no danger fella, easy mistakea to makea ;) as i say, for me it is about fitting under a 15" speedline
  10. good point thanks Mic personally, the pedal feel on my VR is terrible compared to my valver yes my abs is not the best but since moving to USR discs & green stuff pads i dont lock up anymore when heavy braking, which was done very easily on the prior genuine VW discs/pads, but unless you stomp on the VR pedal it is very squidgy even when you stomp on it it is only very firm for a moment & then it depresses further my main issue with bigger brakes is most need bigger wheels, which pushes the costs way out of reach AFAIK only 288's will fit under a 15" speedline & if i was to invest in those i would be buying calipers which are second hand & thus i have no idea of their 'real' condition whilst also needing all the other parts too - i am going to try & compare the cost if i can whereas obviously the hispec would be all fresh & new etc as for pads Mic - hispec gave me a price of £43.50 for a pair of EBC green stuff - which from memory is pretty good & nowhere near the bespoke prices you mention i believe the hoses are very good value too as £20 odd a side seems cheaper than goodridge braids for example - unless they are non-braided but i think they were
  11. i dont believe 312's will fit under a 15" speedline though will they?
  12. i am of the same train of thought Jim - the temptation to be able to have some much better stopping power without having to also invest in new wheels is rather enticing think i may ring them & ask for the template thingy which you cut out & put inside your wheel to confirm they will fit
  13. ok i called hi-spec today to check out their offering which can fit under (or should) a 15" speedline I must say i was pleasantly surprised billet 4 kit, comprising of calipers, discs, brackets & bolts etc for £5oo +vat ish (i say ish as they offer anodised or painted at different costs) for those in the trade they do a 20% discount if ordered by the company kit comes minus pads & hoses (as they need banjo's) but hoses are about £20 each side & then a range of pads on offer i wonder what the offset against say a 288mm upgrade would be - as for that i would also need new discs, hoses etc etc

  15. it could be that the VR's are more common than the g60's & not much need for big brakes on a 16v (ie another 4 stud) i doubt redrilling would be preferable only option i could potentially see is if the calipers could be used with alternative carriers so as to fit a VR with other discs
  16. i think your issue may be due to stud pattern the 'majority' of people i believe would want bigger brakes on VR though G60's are 4 stud i guess so maybe they might like them
  17. good point Jim ,thanks i hope it is not something along those lines as when it was at Stealth Vince identified that the oil system was over pressurising due to an ailing sump pump but that was replaced & i believe he would have rechecked the pressures to ensure it fixed the issue also, i recall Vince saying that if you have an over pressure issue with oil - when the engine is cold if you give it much over 3.5k revs the engine will stall (think he said it was a classic sign or something but i never go over 3k revs until fully warmed up) it needs the drivers sill looking at & likely patching so im going to ring the mechanic today & book her in ive also replied to lilfuzzer's caliper post in case i need to buy them if i do have a sticky caliper
  18. thanks m8 it feels physical though, not nice under foot at all
  19. hi fuzz i have a 95 VR6, would these be suitable? are all the movements free & nice etc? thanks
  20. i would hope so Ian as my mechanic did the work & he never normally misses anything or skimps it is going to have to go & have the drivers sill sorted before winter sets in too much so may bite the bullet & just get him to check it all out
  21. my thoughts too fella couldnt muster myself to go lie on a freezing cold drive yesterday though lol
  22. successfully got the VR back home on sat - coolant seems all good & new clip holding the hose she was not a happy girl though :( noticed a small leak coming from around the oil cooler area & very slowly dripping down when the engine is running - only had a new oil cooler last year so a tad bemused as to what is causing that also, i seem to have a brake issue but is very odd it sounds & feels like the front right caliper is sticking a little as i can feel & hear the noise & vibration caused by the slots in the USR discs when i am not braking but i also have the noise & feel as if a pad is completely worn down - however i can see at least 5-8mm of pad material left on the front pads before the backing part of the pad unless there is an unknown body in the pad i have no clue as to what would get it to make the noises it is fortunately the valver is being nice to me at the moment lol
  23. got the VR home on saturday & all seemed ok...well, with the coolant anyway
  24. sorry Ian i am unsure, it was just the car park out the front of the train station
