  1. I use synta-gold (5w 40) which is about £25 from VW for 5 litres. There are 2 types a filter, plastic and metal. You need the metal type.
  2. Undo the 2 large bolts on either side and leave the small 13mm bolts in the middle as they support the front subframe. I wouldn't trust these small bolts entirely as they are holding the partial weight of the engine so its best to use a jack or something similar to support the subframe while the large bolts are out.
  3. The first thing to do is the suspension if it hasn't been done already. A decent set of coilovers/decent set of sports dampers with matched springs is the best mod you can do to a corrado. Enlarged TB not really worth it unless in conjunction with other mods to improve the breathing.
  4. I think the supercharger is better value for money and I'm sure you'll quickly get used to the extra power a vsr/cams give and want to upgrade further. The chassis copes well with 260hp/245lbft and because the power is progressive the chassis doesn't feel overwhelmed. Really you want to have a go in both modified cars so you can draw your own conclusions.

    pump noise

Not sure if you can hear the fuel pump above the noise of the exhaust outside the car but you can hear it on the inside. Could it be the exhaust making contact with the aluminium heat shield, causing a vibration or a blowing exhaust?
  6. Thanks for the reply I've got a spare set of leads which I can swap over but it's unlikely to be the leads/plugs which are causing the problem as they have only covered 2k. I forgot to add that the car has been standing outside for a while in damp conditions which seem to lead to coilpack problems. My coilpack is made by beru. Is beru or temic original equipment or do both firms supply vw? I haven't got access to another coilpack so it looks like I'll have to buy new.
  7. I have got the Z-Engineering supercharger on my vr6 and have done about 20k on the charger without any problems. I can't speak for the vortech charger but I have heard they are very solid and the new kits (vf-engineering) are based on vortech charger. The kit is very simple and consists of a centrifugal charger, mounting bracket, bolts, hoses/air filter and a modified chip to increase fueling after 4000 revs. The z-kit has a self-contained oil reservoir to lubricate the bearings whilst the vortech kit has an oil line from the engine (this involves tapping a feed into the oil filter housing and making a hole in the sump for the return line). Both off the shelf kits produce 6psi which equate to around 260 crank hp. However the vortech can be upgraded as it can handle more boost (max boost on the z-kit is 9 psi whilst the vortech can handle more than 15psi). The z-kit (6 psi) now retails at £2000 and the vortech stage 1 (6 psi) costs £2500 (excluding fitting). Check out nsracing/vf-engineering websites for more info. Basically if you won't be upgrading the z-kit will suit your requirements and it is easy to fit yourself but if you want to upgrade the vortech is the way to go although it may get expensive (stage 2 upgrade for the vortech is £1000- therefore £2500+£1000= £3500 for 290hp) or you could go custom or even turbo. There are lots of options, cost being the main limitation.
  8. Driving along yesterday and the car started misfiring badly, firing on one cylinder and jerking. :( Are these the symtoms of failed coilpack? The failure happened quite suddenly and I suspect the coilpack as it is original (116k) and I have changed many other components which can cause bad running (maf, 02 sensor, plugs and leads, cam position sensor, isv). I have repaired the insulation using epoxy glue but this hasn't made any difference. Could it be a failure of another component? Is there a fault code for the coilpack on vag-com or does it simply report a misfire? Thanks in advance

  10. You can buy it separately :) but you have to take the cable off to put it on :(
  11. Crank pulley costs 200 dollars and is lighter, so the engine revs faster.
  12. Genuine discs are £35 each I use ferodo pads from halfords for about £20 but I think vw use pagid. Grooved/drilled discs are a waste of time imo. I've used zimmerman dics/pagid pads which were rubbish-overheated easily and eventually warped. Other recommend mods which really make a difference are braided hoses and dot 5 brake fluid which combined with vw discs should improve things.
  13. You need a thermostatic sandwich plate, threaded extension, hoses and fittings and a 13 row oil cooler. These parts add up to about £150 from Thinkautomotive (mocal). You need to find a position to mount the cooler infront of the radiator and the sandwich plate bolts onto the factory heat exchanger. Block-heat exchanger-sandwich plate-threaded extension-factory retaining plate.
  14. Avoid boge. A mate swapped his factory front dampers on a vr for boge and the damping was just as spongy as the originals which had done 80k. Can you use something like koni yellows with standard springs?
  15. I know a lot of oil goes through the crankcase breather as vr's breathe heavily (I used to see smoke mainly when going down hills when backing off. Its not valve stems because the head is new and there is no smoke on acceleration or gearchange so bores are probably ok.
  16. 116k. If you want to wind back the mileage, jack up the front end and run the car in reverse :)
  17. Plastic extractor is nothing but decoration, defo need a metal one. One dealer wouldn't sell me one but another one did.
  18. C@R advertise retrimming in their catalogue. There's Snappy Gaitors and other firms/individuals in Cheshire who used to trim for Rolls Royce.

    Funny Noise...

I'd say so too, mine thumped away and sounded like the exhaust knocking on the bodywork on cornering.
  20. Are copper electrode plugs ok for FI? They seem to be used a lot on the US, especially on supercharged vws.

    Seats Loose!!!

There is a yellow T-shaped rubber damper on the front of each seat located where the middle rail slides through the guides which are part of the floorpan. If they are missing the seats rock like mad.
  22. Cheers both! Its actually for a 96 polo which needs a lick of paint.
