The idea is to get exactly the right amount of fuel in, for the oxygen in there to burn the lot. If theres too much fuel, a rich mixture, you won't get as much power as you could and if there is a weak mixture same deal. Plus a weak mixture burns hotter and under boost you could melt a piston. Noticing your sig, I hope you have a chip that'll cope with the air from a 65mm pulley!! NOX failure could be the cat. Gavin

I haven't come across one that was ever seized. big spanner of the correct size and off you go. Better to disconnect the wires first obviously cos they get knotted round everything otherwise. Gavin

Glad my tax £s aren't being wasted! Got no wars to attend to?

The immobilisation like that is part of the requirement of thatcham to get CAT 1 status. Gavin

I am pretty sure all the fan control gubbins is under the bonnet. It could be that the low speed part of the fan control switch in the rad has died. If you pull the connector off the switch in the rad and short it out, you should be able to get both speeds. If you do then the switch is forked if not, then something else is up. Not got Bentley at home so can't go deeper at the moment. Also figure that with the recent warmer weather that water temps will be a little higher. The other thing is the fan itself. Gavin

I'd just do the rod bearings. If you have good compression now, I don't see the point in messing with the rings. Gavin

You can get the engine to TDC using the marks at the crank pulley. With the cap off the rotor should be pointing to a small notch on the dissy body, under the plastic dust shield. If not then the engine needs rotating 180 degrees. Crank and rotor in the right place, then the rotor will be pointing to number one plug lead. The rotor will go round clockwise, so the next lead should got to number 3 etc etc. The cat will wiggle a little bit, but it won't affect the timing cos that is down to the hall sender. Gavin

Fingers crossed for you Roger

The outer 2 pins should read around 5-600 ohms. Gavin

Roger, that ECU is not known, there is a 024 BF though. It is a transponder one though. ETKA lists all chassis numbers from S 050 001 onwards as having transponder keys. Gavin

Graham, I had a look at the book and the only thing I can see is the dip switch on the column. I can't explain why it makes the lights come on though. Gavin

I have had this before and I am pretty sure the its the................no can't remember  yet. Bentley diagrams are easy to work. Current flows from top to bottom of the pages. 12Volts along the top line, earth at the bottom. Find the headlight switch and go from there. If I remember I'll let you know. Gavin
-
Do you have a main beam at all? Could be that the dipswitch on the column isn't connected. With a wiring diagram in front of you it'll be easy to work out. Gavin

scrappy 3 quid, VW christ knows.....................
-
It should be the same. But beware to get exactly the same part number cos some MK3s have an immobiliser in the key which you would need to replicate in your keys. If you get me the number of your ECU I can check which kind it it. Gavin

VW or a scrappy. Gavin

Earths are at both sides of the boot. Try following the brown wires out of the clusters. Use the diagram for a mk2 if you have nothing else, most VWs are wired pretty much the same. Gavin

Make sure you mention the wheel moving. I am going to fit replacement wishbones today for a similar fault to yours. I had it tracked a few weeks ago. A couple of weeks later I ran through a bit of a hole at work which produced a nasty bang and the steering wheel is no longer set correctly. Also the inside both tyres is well worn. I called into the place on the high street and got it on the ramp. The lad was all for setting the tracking again but I got him to get a bar out for me. You can move the wheels back and forth in the arch about an inch. That must be a hideous change in track during acceleration and braking. Which has done both front tyres by the same amount. Bushes first them tracking. SHALL I START THE OE/POLY THING AGAIN????? I have got poly. Gavin

AD's 16V, Thanks for the ABS sensor. Looks like sunday will be busy. Quick delivery once the cheque cleared. Cheers Gavin ABS snag now cured. :D

Have you heard of the Post Office? You don't need to go there, you can fit them in the comfort of your own street. There really is no magic involved in fitting a chip. Darren must supply instructions cos not everyone goes down there. If not PM me and I'll talk you through it. You just need to set the ign timing and maybe the mixture. Gavin

Does the sidelight work on the drivers side? If not the fuse has gone. If it does work then you'll need a wiring diagram to get busy. Gavin

Calipers to measure the diameter of the pulley. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 31807&rd=1

If its less than 25-30 quid it's probably worth a shot. Get the verniers out to see what size it is. You need to be sure its a 68 and not a 65, the extra boost from a 65 without the right chip could do untold damage to your motor. I just looked on ebay and someone has a couple of other pullies for sale, look a bit minging but it wouldn't stop them working. Gavin

Sam, LHD Corrados may be fitted with electric headlight adjustment. My LHD G60 Golf did and my Syncro has too. I bet it means that you cannot use the electrics with the angel eyes. Gavin
