That is probably similar to the loom that I make up. I use coloured wiring to make it easy to hook up. You just have to make the colours line up. I have one relay each for dip and main beam|(with spot). That is pretty horrible looking but that wouldn't stop it working if the wiring is correct. If you want to try and make a nicer job, I don't think it would be wasted time. Gavin

On top of a head set, you will need a sump gasket and 2 crankshaft oil seals. A full rebuild might include a set of piston rings, big end shells, main bearings a set of con rod bolts and nuts, oil pump. The list could go on and on. I'd ask the garage for a bit of clarification as to how far they are going. Gavin

Over-revving on gear change (and now tighten throttle cable)
h100vw replied to Jim's topic in Engine Bay
The tickover screw on my Golf used to back itself out on trackdays. It would tickover at 2k, the ISV would try it's best to bring it back down. After the first time it happened, it was easy to spot. My Passat plays up a every now and then. It tickover at 1500, if you open and close the throttle quickly it ticks over normally. I am putting it down to the closed throttle switch being a bit intermittent. Gavin -
Take the the sump off and make sure the oil pickup on the pump is clear. Any crap in there will hamper oil pressure and may make the tappets rattle. Not a 100% fix but a sump gasket and oil change is much cheaper than 16 tappets!! Gavin

What relays have you got? No-one I know of has seen the back of a US headlight. A few people has enquired about my looms from over the pond, not sold one yet though and the exchnage rate is anightmare. Can you send us/me some pictures and I'll check out what you have? How many relays? Really need 2 to do the job right. Cheers Gavin

AMD wouldn't have the facilities to skim a head and pressure test it. Only a £40 job around here. GAvin

I could recommend Redline, improved teh crap shift on my syncro no end. With 2 gears being difficukt to select, I'd check the set up of the lever and cables. Also consider the mech at the box. My Golf went all nasty over about 3 days. Andy Walker at Awesome sent his boy for a can of grease and lubed the mech up. Sorted. Gavin

I think I'll get into the headgasket game with those quotes. More money than working on airplanes. Gavin

Take it for a good run to make sure the exhaust gets well hot. That'll boil off any moisture in the exhaust. The cold weather makes them steam a bit more, I noticed it yesterday on my Passat on the way to work. Gavin

G man, I have some secondhand ones if you need them. CHEAP. You need to lap them in anyway so there is no real benefit in getting new ones. IMHO Gavin

Darren do you do cheque spread then?? Dave C, open up a 0% credit card to get the money. You have 6 months to pay for it then with no interest. Easy. Gavin

Red tops are 110 quid, doing myself out of a sale but why use old gear? A new chip isn't that much to go with the injectors. Gavin

My Golf one was 120 delivered, Cooler was a bit big TBH. Need to factor in cost of 2 replacement water hoses for the deletion of the std oil cooler. gavin

The oil cooler on a mk1 GTI was originally designed to cool a warmed up Beetle. It was of marginal use on a MK1 with 112BHP. Please draw your own conclusions as to whether it would be much good on a G60 with 160+. Basically it' s too small and the Tstat opens at 100 degrees I think. Much better to have a proper oil cooler, any of the specialists on here will advise/supply a kit for you. g-man and 16VG60. I bought a kit for my Golf direct from http://www.thinkauto.co.uk There may be fitting problems on a Corado that I am not aware of. Gavin

Sorry my estimate was based on a G60. A 16V gasket is far cheaper..... Any half decent garage should be able to sort you out for a couple or 3 hundred.

Find another garage and get the car to them instead. They might have a policy about skimming the head but do they expect you to spend what will probably add up to over a grand on the engine? If you have no choice but to leave it there, point out that you are paying for this yourself and that it isn't a company car. VW have a policy about parts and labour on older VWs so I am sure they can tell you up front a pretty close estimate of the cost. To be honest if you get another place to do the work you may have a chance of driving there as long as you don't get caught in traffic. I drove my Golf for about 20 miles after the gasket blew. I did have an oil cooler fitted, which would have helped keep the temps in check. Just don't boot it everywhere. http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictu ... 4290637189 This was the result of someone fitting ann ordinary head gasket and not a G60 metal one. Gavin

I doubt the head is wasted. It might need skimming which is only £40 quid near me. The HG is about £30 but I know that vwspeedltd are selling full head sets on ebay. Probably a couple/3 hundred to sort it out if it is gone Gavin

I am pretty sure G12 isn't supposed to be used neat. Some other AF is pre-diluted so you don't add extra water. Gavin

You need to prove to the MOT man that you can open the door from outside the car. It doesn't say how you have to do it. A remote and solenoid works ok. I would advise sticking with teh mechanical handle inside the car in case of trouble. Don't want to get stuck in the car due to a flat battery. Check your plans with the fella who is going to test your car in future, then you should have no problems Gavin

Be wary of buying one from ebay. Could easily be shagged. Speak to Darren. AT the money you have paid it's worth doing the job right. Cutting corners rarely works in my experience. Gavin

No apologies required. This is stuff you need to know to save yourself money.A cheeky garage could have billed you big style for an egg cup of brake fluid. 'Yeah we replaced the master cylinder, that'll be 300 plus the dreaded'. Gavin

Andycowuk, this sounds like a garage clearing opportunity  I have the original injectors from my Golf. They were removed to fit the reds. They are sat in the top of my tool box in a bag. For a small fee, negotiable, you could have them checked out and replace yours with a known good set? If the turn out to be no good I'd do you a refund on their return. Gavin
-
I'd bet that a fuild change wouldn't go amiss. No telling when it was last done. More than 2 years ago and it should be replaced at the earliest opportunity. Gavin
-
True enough. I had a duff dissy cap on my Passat. The carbon pip was stuck in the cap and not making with the rotor arm. Poor spark no performance. Not a problem at the time as the clutch was slipping like a good un. Gavin

If the ECU thinks that the throttle is closed then it wouldn't advance the ignition timing, hence gutless performance as it is at 6 degrees. I would think that a closed throttle switch, would over-ride a wide open one for safety reasons. Gavin
