Absolutely mate! This is worth gold... You're lucky to be in that position. The mechanic I had here who specializes in VW decided to close the shop after 20 years, he's moving back to Germany. I was pretty sad when he told me and now I can only rely on myself, YouTube and you guys on the forum.

To be fair though you will learn a hell of lot doing it your way.

Went for a stock look on the Schrick - she is nearly ready to go back in the bay.  Pictures attached.

All ready a cut on the underside of the bonnet when it was fitted in the car in 2003 - you can also see on the left front corner some chaffing from the bonnet when some new engine mounts were fitted and raised the engine a little.

I see. Shame you can’t shorten the mounts to reduce the overall height of the block.

It had a Vibratechnic  mount on before and that sat a little lower I guess - prob a mistake swapping it out for a stock one but I wanted to experience the ride on stock mounts- going to cut a little more away and have some paint with correct code and tidy it up- just one of those slight issues as the Schrick was designed for a Mk3 bay I believe. I imagine the VSR no under cutting needed on the bonnett ?

Yeah, I'm not sure about the Schrick mate... I think you should sell it to me 😉
Seriously, it's a real beauty! It's such a nice piece, I'm almost jealous!
Color combo is classic, I love the setup specially on your black car.
Looking at your engine, I see the OEM plastic crack pipe and thermostat housing. No problem with them?
I'm asking because I was thinking of upgrading to the Grüvenparts setup.

Gruvenparts ones are nice to have, but not cheap - especially the thermostat housing.

If you have the money you could put them on for peace of mind - but to be honest the original items last well over 20 years and at least 100k miles, so if you change them for new ones now you should be good for another long stretch.

Engine so what failed that lead to a rebuild ? 

So attached is three valves that are slightly bent (can't tell off picture) - if you put the end in a drill and pressed the button each one will shake all over the place This would of led to at least 40 percent less power in each cylinder affected due to lack of compression. The valve guides were also off shape- valve seals no good- and were way past good- the cylinders had slight ovulation. 

What I will say anyone with a engine that has covered 150k and thinks that just changing the valve seals is a fix  to smokey exhaust dream on -. The head was in perfect condition. 

The last owner had a firm called John Austin VW Specialist in Colchester do the timing chain in 2018 only about 6k miles ago- charged £1,620.00 have receipt. Inspection of there work after removal of the timing chain trim  was reported as very poor and incorrect- so I would look else where if your in that part of the country, make your way to a specialist like Stealth instead.

Even though I have owned a VR for a few years today was the first ever day i really found out what it was all about. The engine was a completely different beast even though I couldn't go past 3500 revs because of bedding in.  Cannot thank Vince enough, the engine was down on power before because of the bent valves causing low compression, but now with the Schick ecu chip from Vince and new cylinders and pistons she is a different creature- the dynamics and performance on the car are on an another level. Attached a few photos of her back in the bay and bedding procedure. Please note we all have a different take on bedding in a new engine but what you have to remember is VW have multi million pound precise machinery and constant heat at 20 degrees - so you need to go gentle on a rebuilt engine that has been honed aftermarket as per Stealth advice.

pity the schrick is hidden below the bonnet and no one can see it!

i have to say also the red vr6 badge is much better than the silver cant help but be really be drawn to it

Thanks Geri and sorry chap I will get some better photos tomorrow looking downwards - car was parked nose up a hill so i could get the sun reflecting off the schrick .  .  Well they do say red in the animal kingdom is for danger and the VR can be snappy little sh.. when it wants to be ! If you want chap I can give you a link for any badges the price on them have come to more like £40.00 and less just let me know.
