I wouldnt worry to much about how many gears the bike bike has, as nowadays they have plenty. if your looking second hand then use http://www.pinkbike.com/ or sourtherndowhill or gum tree The main thing with buying second hand is to make sure the running gear, i.e the chain and the rear cassette are not worn out, as to replace them will cost you £50. plus you would need the right tools.

Hey I know a lot about mountain biking and cant recommend it enough its a sport which takes you to the very edge! If your considering doing a lot of trail riding then I would recommend going for hydraulic brakes on the bike you get. The difference is huge. That would be around the £450-600 mark. Front suspension ( hardtail ) Also consider - lights for commuting - a decent lock if you dont have anywhere to keep it secure, the number of bikes that I have heard of being stolen or the locks that have been cut is astonishing. For your mountain biking. - you would probably also want a ruck sack for keeping water, spare inner tubes, patches, munchies and tools. -depending how you feel but i would recommend knee pads as well as off course a helmet. As you will find slipping of a pedal and the pedal meeting your shins is not pleasant. - As for tools either borrow them off friends or buy them as you require them heres one of the top websites for bicycles and parts http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ Any questions feel free to ask, I have been biking for a number of years between myself and friends we have replaced every part on a bike either from destroying forks or tearing rear mechs off. Hopefully you will be shredding some trails soon : )

is the inside shot blasted badly ? could you put a phot up, its a bit hard to tell without seeing it

If you can then it could be worth getting a auto electrician, save you wasting time and money finding the fault. They have the equipment.

Help! Tell me why I should keep my Valve!
Wild-Animal replied to abrargill's topic in General Car Chat
They say your nuts.......... just ask them what the depriciation value is on their cars I bet it will be more than £700 a year. -
I stand corrected then

Yeh I would be changing your fuel filter. It could be causing a strain on your fuel pump

I am not sure, as the fan only really come on when you are stationary, so the hot air from the radiator will be blown into the already hot engine bay, you might see an increase in temperature, the fans would keep pushing warm air against the engine. thats why the fans will nomally be mounted in the inside pushing the warm air out of the engine bay.

I take it you have checked the oil level. It does not take much for these engines to not be running right. If you can take it to a garage and get the CO checked and the ignition timing.

Having new tyres on the back, could that not mean you would have more grip on the back end? I know with mountain biking I put a new tyre on the back and left the front partly worn and I was always fighting with the bike, I could never get a good feedback. I changed them both at once the next time and the difference in feed back was huge.

Hey thanks a lot for the info! : )

Hey, I have a 1.8 KR G plate corrado and my alternator is broken, I have looked all over the alternator but can't find out the amps it puts out. Its either 65 or 90. Does anyone know? I could really do with getting one soon. Even VW could not tell me what amps it has. Thanks, calum

how restrictive are the standard exhaust systems
Wild-Animal replied to cptkirk's topic in Engine Bay
I have been working on designing an exhaust system for a race car at uni. From having no exhaust then having a highly tuned exhaust system to a car will only give 4 Hp of difference, it also depends on the of headers as to where the power will be. a 4-2-1 header will be better for power through out the rev range compared to a 4-1 header which is normally tuned to top end power. A friend told me that a trial was tested on a MK4 golf with varoius different exhaust systems on a dyno, everysingle system they put on the car made the car loose power compared to the original exhasut apart from one system had a gain of 1 hp. -
Its the thermotime switch for the radiator fan. If the engine bay is too warm the fan runs on after the car has been turned off. if you are still unsure earth out the cable whiles its connected to the switch and the fan will turn on.

A driver instructor was telling me that Provisional licence s have dropped at the end of last year by 20 % due to the cost of driving. One of his pupils passes his test bought a corsa for £800 and was going to cost him £4000 to insure it and that was with a black box inside the car, that monitors your Revs braking accelerating This is all sent to the insurance company which reflects in your premuim. What you need is a farm policy insurance that your dad owns and shove your car under that policy as well, that way the premium will hardly be affected due to the price of the other machinery !

Its when you get patterns in the metal of the knife, I use to work as a blacksmith and some of the guys would pattern weld knifes, you create a billet which has 2 different types of metals stacked one ontop of each other say up to 100mm high stack. You then fireweld the billet together by using blistering heat and heavy hammer work so the metals weld to each other, once you have your billet you can fold it back upon itself punch holes into or twist it, what ever you want you pattern on the metal to look like. The affects can be pretty awesome it takes some skill some people have pattern welded their name into the blade.. The edge of the blade is harder than the rest of the knife to make it harder to wear, but the rest of the blade is usually springier as if the blade was used it could shatter. There are huge variations in the different steels you can use or make, tabaskin steel, carbon steel edge. Plus firewelding is always good to see :) Heres an example http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=pattern+welded+knife&um=1&hl=en&sa=X&rlz=1C1LENN_enGB452GB452&tbm=isch&tbnid=ZKWTCTDE4dQnvM:&imgrefurl=http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php%3Fubb%3Dshowflat%26Number%3D1327328&docid=aI95JGcaaBEfoM&imgurl=http://gallery.slackdot.org/d/29767-1/IMG_3280.JPG&w=640&h=480&ei=X6ogT-PoNZO3hAeJnIjrBA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=725&vpy=144&dur=1819&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=189&ty=102&sig=103797453930270319374&page=2&tbnh=136&tbnw=179&start=18&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:18&biw=1366&bih=643

Yeh my friend buys these cars "Dealers don't want what they term "runts" on their forcourt and it costs to put them in the block (auction) so if you are friendly with them and will take all the crap (as they see it) and have cash, they are happy." He makes a lot of money doing this, he can sell 5 cars a week. Gets them for peanuts pushes them through an M.O.T if they need one and sells them on. He gets decent cars as well not just garbage.

Hey looking for a power steering pipe from the reservior to the power steering pump, prederably good condition. 1.8 16 valve KR. Thanks Calum
-
If you have enough degreser you could try steep the pipes and intercooler in it over night. I know the gegreases I have used only really works if you work with a brush while using the degreaser.

the sensors are in the £20 region mark now, if you refit one be careful dont over tighten them. Also upon removal of one of mine it sheared so again just be carefull as I had to get irwins to get it out. Also out of the 3 sensors 2 of them have coolant that will come out behind it, dont worry as long as you have the new sensor next to you, you can pop the new one in with relative ease. And yeah if the car has been running give it a while to cool down hot coolant is not going to be fun to deal with while your trying to put the new sensor in.
-
It will be the cable it will have frayed, their is a sharp 90 degree bend on the cable as it leaves the cabin into the engine bay and the cable frays at that point and restricts the movement of it inside the casing. VW sell them, it makes a huge difference
-
Hey also if you can do your research on the four branch manifolds, I am currently designing one and have been doing some research. Your 4-1 will have a benefit on more of a specific rev range, it all depends on the length from the exhaust valve down to where the the 4 pipes meet at the collector and also pipe diameter. These dictate what RPM the exhaust best performs at. Your 4-2-1 will be better for through out the rev range not just top end. That way you can get something that you will beneft the most from.

There are three senders on the end of the engine block, below the dizzy. All there of these are the same so you can swap the wires about and one of these are for your water temperature. What you might find is swapping them about might give you slightly different readings. I noticed when I swap mine about is the temperature needle does seem to sit differently. Also I take it your car is running fine? I got my CO set up right and that made a big difference to the engine temperature.
