  1. It is mate, engine was removed about 18 months ago and completely freshened up, all earth points were torqued and greased up when putting back together so was pretty confident it wasn't anything to do with that. See above for fix though!
  2. Ok scrub the above. Here is what I tried: Ignition switch - Meyle from VW Heritage Starter Motor - Remanufactured Golf V5 unit ECU relay - Used but in working condition Battery pos cable bypass using jump leads directly to the starter motor live. Battery neg cable bypass using jump leads directly to the starter motor earth. Get up out of the car whilst key in position 3 and no cranking - fires into life! A few more tests when nothing happens by lifting the key in the ignition slightly, and starts every time. Removed drivers undertrays and steering cowl to be sure all connectors were seated correctly, and all was fine. Note to self/all, don't trust aftermarket parts even when new!
  3. Found the culprit, here is what I tried. Ignition switch - Meyle from VW Heritage Starter Motor - Remanufactured Golf V5 unit ECU relay - Used but in working condition Battery pos cable bypass using jump leads directly to the starter motor live. Battery neg cable bypass using jump leads directly to the starter motor earth. Get up out of the car whilst key in position 3 and no cranking - fires into life! A few more tests when nothing happens by lifting the key in the ignition slightly, and starts every time. Dropped the dash undertrays to make sure connections were all seated correctly just to be sure, but nothing wrong there. Note to self/all, don't trust aftermarket parts even when new! Also fitted a replacement sunroof motor from a mk3 Golf, and my sunroof now slides fully closed after opening. Job done for now!
  4. Looks a cracker, and not in need of much at all judging by the photos! Good effort and welcome to the forum!
  5. Morning Gents, having a bit of a snag where occasionally when I turn the key nothing happens. I've changed the ignition switch, and just swapped the starter motor over for a Golf V5 one and symptoms remain the same. Only other thing I can think is ECU relay or the ECU itself? I've scanned it with VCDS, and there are no apparent fault codes - would the ECU relay being faulty show up on VCDS? Has anyone encountered similar/same problems before and can suggest anything? Is there something obvious I may be missing? I can't think of anything else it might be aside from what I've said above? Any help much appreciated as always!!! :thumbleft:
  6. That's what I went for. Just dropped it in and it sounds much smoother when starting, but unfortunately hasn't cured occasional dead key turn problem.
  7. It's a remanufactured (refurbished) Bosch one Chris, I got it on eBay mate.
  8. The price though..........Ouch!!!! I'm sure you could get one refurbished for about a fifth of that!
  9. I'll give that a go, thanks Dox. :thumbleft:
  10. Well Rob you've right. Just paid £48 for the garage to do it, and it feels no different. Passed the MOT with it though so I'll see how the bed in and give em a good stomp on when I get a quiet moment. Onto the starter motor at the weekend weather permitting! Oh, and I'm booked in at JMR for geometry on 24th Feb so a nice little run down there to perve at his G60 if it's on site!
  11. Yeah the motor is fine, its the mechanism thats not a 100% fit. The mk3 one won't tilt up the inner trim as it doesn't have the hooks the Corrado mechanism has.
  12. Get yourself an angle bit screwdriver adapter Rob. Perfect for those pesky dash screws and it's helped my out quite a few times in those sort of confined areas!
  13. You bring up a very good point (PCD) and one which I had overlooked!
  14. Swap em onto the corrado and see what you think. I think 10-15mm will be the limit though without scrubbing on standard et43 wheel, with 10mm spacers bringing it to effectively et33. My RXs are et35 and are perfect imo, so 10mm should be good.
  15. Tried with handbrake cables disconnected, put back on and one cable was slightly loose with the mechanism at the stops so frightened it a bit. If I apply the handbrake then push the brake pedal, the handbrake will come up about another 2 notches.
  16. Will do mate. It failed on service brake efficiency (rear) and parking brake so points toward rear calipers. I changed them for the mk4 Golf ones and the pistons move freely, the slider pins have been removed again and copper greased even though they were functioning perfectly before, so I'm just praying it's not something more sinister. Brakes feel spongy and on short test drives the braking is just really ineffective. I have to stamp as hard as I can and the abs eventually kicks in, but it shouldn't take that much effort. It's been a fair while since I really used the car, but I'd always been quite impressed with the brakes beforehand (288mm fronts and braided lines all round too). As I said, everything points to air in the system but I'm just worried it'll be something more sinister and cost me a bloody fortune in parts and labour now I'm handing it over.
  17. Not sure if I introduced air into the braking system when using the eezibleed, so roped the missus in again to do it manually. A further 2 litres through the entire system, and still no dice. Dropping it off to the garage tomorrow morning for them to do. Hopefully they can do it before Monday, but if not it's tough I suppose. Never had a problem with this car after doing the whole system from dry, then replacing all hoses but this time it's got me. First time I've had to let the "professionals" do any work on this car, but they have a vacuum bleeder and I don't!
  18. I used chrome spray paint once, and in all honesty I wouldn't bother. Turns out nothing like chrome, more a slightly reflective (being generous) shade of silver. That was a plasticote can iirc.

    Pedal rubbers

I understand your logic David, but I've honestly never had a problem with smooth control of the throttle. Modern DBW cars use them and the the throttle is much more sensitive than the cable operated throttle, so don't think it's an issue tbh mate.

    Pedal rubbers

Me too. If you just put into ebay 'VW accelerator pedal rubber' it'll come up with loads starting at less than a fiver. They are used across quite a few models and smarten the foot well up a bit!
  21. Its vacuum operated so connected by a rubber connector, so should just pull out with a small amount of force mate.
  22. I think a few of the Turbo folk use 10w/60. I wouldn't just go trying to get the thickest oil you can find though, 10w/40 as standard was meant for a reason, so going too far off that is asking for trouble imo. Not sure if its been mentioned further back in this thread, but leaking exhaust gasses from the manifold can cause a noise very similar to the tappets. If they've just chucked a load of gasket sealer on the join where it was leaking previously, they may have only partially sorted it. Get a socket extension and put on your ear, and the other end around the engine. You'll be able to get a rough idea of where the noise is actually coming from. Also get a bit of bog roll and pull it in half so you only have a single ply piece. Get it in a garage with the door closed so theres no wind, and from cold so you don't burn your hand accidentally, put it next to the manifold in various places, especially where they've "repaired" it before. You'll see it blowing slightly if there are any leaks mate.
  23. Top man, don't forget to bleed the master cylinder! I remember when I did mine the first time. Brakes were poor but as soon as I did the master cylinder they were perfect. I did it this time, but can't remember if I had the cap on as not much came out. I'm doing the whole system again this week and hoping it comes good by Friday re-test time. Fingers and toes crossed for both of us!!! BTW Rob, there will be a massive build up of dirt around the filler neck so stick your head up there. Its why they're prone to rust as they don't get cleaned very often in that spot. Worth touching up any underseal and letting it dry before the jetwash too as it'll force water underneath and have no way to escape otherwise! :thumbleft:
  24. Welcome back to Corrado ownership!
  25. Cheers Theo. If the weather isn't too bad, I'm gonna try again on Tuesday. If I get nowhere, it'll have to be done by the garage as I need the car from next Monday. Should have pulled my finger out sooner I suppose!
